  1. Is there an echo in here? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. Can I jump it?Please? The one I made is way to big for you. It is a round and is almost 10 feet in diameter. But you won't be dragging. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. I agree, to go past the blade is just asking for problems without any gain. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. If your harness/container or your reserve carry a TSO, you must follow the 120 pack cycle and all other FAA rules, packed by a rigger etc. Your main is not TSO'ed. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  5. Sounds like it was handled great. Good job and kudos to all. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  7. You have been given some great advise on how to learn RW. The best way to get good at skydiving is skydiving. One thing you should keep in mind, we can't all be world champs. You started skydiving for the fun and enjoyment. It is recreation, don't turn it into a job. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. Skratch Garrison was part of "The Arvin Good Guys". He was part of the group of jumpers that defined how and what we do today. How many jumpers were born after 4/24/66? That is when Skratch got his SCR. There were only 14 awarded that year. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. I think you are right. The army and navy only use a soft loop on the their sports type rigs. Air crew systems and bail out systems use cones. Most head box ejection seat type system use a steel wire loop with a steel pin similar to a bobby pin. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  10. Kris, Bring it to Perris on Sat. and I will take it up with you. I am going to be dropping the attached rig. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  11. A single deployment causes more wear on a reserve canopy then a single repack. It is not only exposed to the stress of deployment, possibly at terminal, but the added wear of landing on the ground, gathered up by the jumper and transported to a rigger for packing. Once in the hands of a rigger it suffers the wear of a repack, all caused by the deployment. The experiment conducted by Galloway, passing a small square of material around to several people hardly compares to a reserve canopy carefully repacked by a single pair of hands in a controlled enviromnent. Two weeks ago I landed a reserve, DOM 07/18/94, with around 30 re-packs and 3 deployments. It gave me an easy stand-up in the middle of the landing area. Before the use of ZP, canopies made of F-111 type material gave jumpers 100's of safe landings on canopies loaded as high as 1.25:1. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  15. I didn't say anything about USPA, you did. The present leadership didn't have anything to do with banning Blast handles, so what. The leadership at the time of the change had something to do with it. Again, I did not mention USPA, you did. USPA lobbied aggressively enough to get the repack cycle extended from 60 to 120 days. I am not aware of all their efforts in respect to the 180 day repack cycle and I doubt if you do. Para-Flite (not Paraflight) has not made a reserve for the sports market in some 15 years. Comparing them to PD is comparing apples to oranges. It makes no sense. Lets stop blowing smoke and share with us what your personal problem is with USPA. 17. See if you can locate a copy of "Performance, Design and Construction of Ram-Air inflated, Gliding parachute wings" by Manley Butler. It was written in 1985 but the principles still apply. http://www.butlerparachutes.com/ Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. It sounds like you have a set of MT-1X risers. They were used for CREW many years ago before the advent of CREW canopies. The only place I have seen them lately is on the MT-1X. If you use them be sure and have a hook knife handy. They have been known to hang up. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  19. Sorry I missed the smiley. I am not sure what PD's stand on the repack cycle is. You might contact them and ask. The repack cycle used to be 60 days for all rigs, but through efforts of the skydiving community it is now 120 for most sports rigs. The 60 days is still in effect for any rig containing natural materials. i.e. cotton, silk. The repack cycle is not completely arbitrary, the FAA is charged with our protection. But they are very slow in changing things. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  20. Do you even have a clue as to what research, development and testing equipment manufactures have done? Do you think that modern sports gear just happened. There is a huge body of knowledge developed by gear manufactures over the past 40 + years. To receive a TSO the gear you wear has been tested to +200 degrees and -40 degrees. It has spent 400 hours, yes 400 hours, under a 200 pound load while packed. It has to pass just over 70 drop tests and something like 12 live jumps. The manufactures of you gear spend a great deal of money on "research". When a reserve is used it is repacked. You do not wait until the re-pack cycle is up to pack it. You should spend some time learning about your gear and its upkeep. I've never really understood why repacking a reserve causes wear. It may effect the porosity slightly over time but I can't imagine the reserve failing from too many pack jobs, especially if it's never been used. Have any riggers out there had a problem with a reserve being packed too many times to be airworthy? This question is regarding modern style reserves (7-cell F1-11). Quote Have you ever taken the time to study the properties of F-111 or ZP? I would say no, that is why you "can't imagine" packing weakening the fabric. You would also know that modern style reserves (7-cell F-111) are made out of the same F-111 type material as not so modern style reserves. The manufactures and the people who work with canopies day in day out don't make this shit up just to make your life miserable. It is a fact, just like your tires wear out faster if you drive your car. Live with it. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  21. 4 reserve rides? Why so many? That was 4 reserves out of 1600 jumps, all on larger formations. That's not all that bad. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  22. This issue was addressed by Para Inovators in the early eighties. The rip cords for the Streamlite container used a SS sleeve silver soldered to the the end of the cable. It was half again larger in diameter then the regular pin and about 1 1/2 inches long. It would take 100 pounds on the 90 degree load test and not bend. As was stated before, the current pins were designed over 40 years ago and were meant for cones not soft loops. Comparing it to reserve failure, harness webbing failure or an RSL problem is comparing apple to oranges. This is a part that is being used in a way it was never intended to be. Nothing else on a modern sports rig is that way. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
