BSR for canopy loading (from low turn incident thread)
mjosparky replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
Instead of just bitching, why don't you become one of "you guys" and help work out the little details. Come up with something positive that contributes to the goal instead of coming up reasons you think it will fail. Come up with ideas to help it succeed. And just so you know, I have nothing to do with this proposal. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

As someone mentioned in another thread. It is an example of the "me, me, me" mentality of some of our newer jumpers. They are rude, obnoxious and wear these traits as a badge of honor. You are right, that never happened 15 or so years ago. People in the back (front) of the plane, who had no idea what the fuck was going on, did not yell at people in the front (back) of the plane who did. I like the way Bill handled it. Yes, I carry one, and Yes I have used it. Never in a situation where I needed it to save my life. Only when the test plan called for it.
-
I agree to carry a knife....But how many folks will remember they have one? Again I say carry one, but I know several cases where a guy will land with a problem and someone will ask why they didn't use their hook knife...They look confused and then remember they have one. Try this neat test: As people are getting up to get ready ask a guy with a hook knife where his is....Most times they will have to look for it. A few times they will think they don't have one. I myself when I changed gear reached for it in the wrong spot. To be honest I don't know which leg strap it is on right now. I *think* the left one. Ron, Mount you hook knife on your jumpsuit, just below your chest strap. You can see it and reach it with both hands. There are some of us that will use it in a hot minute. But like you said, if you have not conditioned yourself to its location and its use, you will forget. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Anyone recongize these old Idaho jumpers?
mjosparky replied to steve1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Blast handle on the second from the right, back row, but I don't see the single-shot's. Help out an old mans eyes, which one? Sparky Hi Sparky This was a fun thread kind of like the pics of how may yhings can you pick out. I'm guessing the guy with the one shots is the dude middle rear row. Maybe called kryloks or something? Still don't think it's a old pic R.I.P. I think you are right, the guy with the sort of red hair. You know I was thinking that the hair styles don't fit with the gear. Sparky It is one of those pictures, how many things can you pick out. Or how many things can you remember. It sure does. I thought all AT-11's were older, round door 18's. Guess I was wrong. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Scott, We all make mistakes, but few of us have the balls to admit it on an open forum. Good on you and I hope you and Dave can work it out. I might see you there at the end of the month. You know "Air Trash" road trip. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
It is not illegal to spread ashes in the air. There are companys in CA that you can hire to do this from an airplane. What makes most ash dives maybe a little, you know a touch over the line is the permit. You have to have a permit and do it in certain areas. Like someone already said, you don't want to do it over a housing development. I was on one at Perris about a month ago, it was pouring rain and no one said anything to us about a permit. BSR for canopy loading (from low turn incident thread)
mjosparky replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
Hey Keith, I have no stake in this debate other then I don't like it when jumper die. I have to many jumps for what they are proposing and if they want I'll take any "test out" they can come up with. With out some form of control put on W/L vs numbers how do we prevent the newer jumpers from getting under canopies that their experience and knowledge can't handle in a tight situation? If all new jumpers used the sensible approach to choosing a canopy that I have seen you do, there wouldn't be this discussion, but many don't/won't. What do you feel would be a workable program? So in giving me a backhanding compliment about my debating ability, you suggested I only harped on the negatives. And yet, all you've done is bitch that low timers aren't qualified to talk. In short, nothing constructive at all, just sanctioned personal attacks. This approach has cowed many people into silence on this topic, but is hardly a form of leadership. I'm suppose to respect this? And if your drive is based on intense personal experiences, rather than objective thinking, how are you different from the mom that wrote "Jumping Through Clouds?" Don't put words in my mouth, I don't like the taste. All you have done is complain and tear down any program that would impose some form of control. And if your profile is correct, you are not qualified to speak on the subject. I am not trying to be yours or anyones leader, you can't lead a gaggle. And you hardly seem cowed into silence. I really don't give a rats ass what you respect. But there are people that are way ahead of where you are trying to come up with a workable plan to keep people from dying under good canopies. They are doing this to help the sport, not to keep the newer jumper from realizing his dream of being a Swoop God. If he has the talent he will get there, if stupidity doesn't get him first. As far as my drive, you wouldn't have a clue, so don't lose any sleep over it. This says more about you then I ever could. Yeah...that'll stop a lawsuit. I didn't say it would stop a lawsuit. But that is the conditions you agreed to when you bought your new rig. Its up to the individual if they will stand by there word or not. That seems pretty clear. Will it stop a lawsuit, I don't know. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Who Are Your Skydiving Heroes/Mentors?

Sally Wenner is a name from the past. -
Yes, CAREFULLY read your EULA sometime and you'll see that by installing it if it turns your computer into a smoldering heap of parts you can't do anything. Even better is a lot of software is worded that if you open the box you agree to the Licence agreement. Luckly lots of software companies release patches and updates all the time for free. Can you imagine having to pay $20 to get each security patch that came out for Linus or Windows? Does it say this "sold with all faults and without any warranty of fitness for any purpose"? OK, I'm on a roll now. Four more pics from a recent "invitational" 100+ way. That means everyone there is supposed to be good at all aspects of big ways, it's not a training camp. Watch how the jumper with the pink sleeves turns straight into her track (I'm fairly sure it's Flyangel2). See how much altitude and distance she gains compared to the jumpers around her. The guy who starts out on her left (black suit) must be catatonic. He just stays there in his Mantis, doesn't seem aware that there's a big way breaking off around him. The guy on her right also seems rather slow to figure out what's happening. REMEMBER, these are all in the first wave of a staged breakoff. A couple seconds later the next stage will be following them. It's very disconcerting to turn to track and find some slowpoke from the previous wave staring you in the face! Also, frame20, different jump. Guy at bottom left - this is a track? Were you on those dives? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Sparky, I don't take that as a statement saying "Hey if it doesn't work and we find out why, we're not going to bother fixing it unless you pay for it". I accept the risks if I plowed in because of a defect on my rig (much as I'd really rather not have that happen ). However, should that happen, I also expect the manufacturer to take the steps to try and prevent it happening again to someone else. If they have a bad design, they need to fix it IMO. Recalls in the automotive industry are normally because of a number of malfunctions caused by the same components. When they do a recall it's because they found something wrong with the product they initially released and take active steps to prevent it happening again by replacing/repairing the component. That's all I expect from the manufacturers in any industry. As a software engineer it's expected of me regularly. We release a product, bugs are found, we fix them in that version at no cost to our customers. If they want NEW features, well then....they pay up just like everyone else Blues, Ian You are not dealing with software or cars. You read it and accepted the warning. Have you ever seen a similar warning on a car or a software program? This is a second version, it is found in both container and canopy manuals: "This rig is sold with all faults and without any warranty of fitness for any purpose" This By using the rig you agreed to abide by warnings and disclaimer. Its a little late to change your mind now and say you disagree. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
