  1. Very good point Eric. I check to see that line length are equal but rarely check trim measurement. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. Why did you think you needed to reply to this thread? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. Of course not, they were most likely helping you out. Damn, this is a tough crowd to play to. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. Apples & oranges. But that might apply to a pilot that does.
  5. No apology needed at least not to me. If our little exchange will allow you enjoy skydiving a little more pain free I am good with it. Like most people here I may sound like I am slamming you but we are just trying to get your attention. Someone on DZ.com once posted, "good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from poor judgment". It is always better to use someone else’s poor judgment to gain your experience. If you spent 15 years pushing fast movers around the sky you have a pretty good reason for being a little pompous. Now as for spelling errors, no slack that, think spell check. 6. I would hope you have it in writing just in case. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. I am not sure there is a nice way to put this, but you are wrong. The FAR's only address the use of a parachute when doing aerobatics with a passenger aboard. As for STC’s, I have seen several that do not mention the use of a parachute when operating with the door off on everything from DC-3’s to a C-172. But as was posted earlier it is not the smart thing to do. (not intended to step on your toes) My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. I doubt that you have first hand knowledge of happened on the jump or the expertise to make a statement like that. Every canopy I have examined after a malfunction causing major damage was in great condition before the malfunction. Parachutes are made out of cloth not steel. They take a tremendous amount of abuse on deployment. A brand new canopy can self destruct on the first jump if given the right set of conditions. From the description you posted and looking at the pictures my first impression is that the canopy was loaded asymmetrical during deployment. The damage is consistent with tension knots. If you play the video slowly it appears that the jumper has his right shoulder way low at or just before line stretch. You say the jumper has over 2000 jumps, how many on a canopy like the Vel. 107? Why is it that people today are unwilling to accept responsibility for their own actions. When things go wrong sometimes it is the fault of the person involved. As said before, if you think this belongs in “incidents” you are in for surprise when you see a real incident. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. What amazes me is you will still find people who feel the need to change one or more parts of the "system" Bill came up with. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  10. A well told story, it scared the shit out of me and I am sitting I my own den.
  11. I am a retired senior citizen on a fixed income; I don't have a credit card. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  12. The last few years I jumped I made around 50 jumps a year with people who had less than 100 jumps. Not one time do I feel my money was wasted. All I would ask of them was at some time in the future pass that jump on to someone else with less than 100 jumps. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. OK let’s get into a little personal history. I was issued my pilots lic. in 1981. While I do not have 10,000 hours or fly jets, I do fly airplanes. Those parachutes you spent 15 year sitting on or wearing I spent 20 plus year testing so you could sit on them. And if you were flying any of the fighters in the inventory today you were not sitting on the parachute that went out with Sandys. All of your training was dealing with round canopies and does not apply to what you are flying today. Your water drills and probably some form of land drills dealt with releasing the Koch fittings or if you were Navy you had Seawarrs. The canopies you were dealing with were likely a variant of the C-9 a 28’ flat. You like most people do not realize the there is little if anything you learned or did before skydiving that can be transferred over and used in this sport. I am not posting this to make you feel bad or as a slam against you. The very best this sport has produced have died doing it and the reaper won’t bat an eye about taking you if you give him just one little chance. Remember this is recreation, slow down and enjoy. 14. They easily could have drafted most FAR's to say just what they want it to say. But they seem to pride themselves in dealing in ambiguity at its highest level. If you have any doubt how the FAA will view Part 91.107, run it by your local FISDO. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  15. Not true, and you are unable to cite any such federal law. Mark No more calls, we have a winner.

  17. You just might survive in this sport. But then you won't be cool like jimmy. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. Dave, I am going to have to go with some of the other posts. Anytime you falsify something it is "just plain fucked up" to use your term. It shows a willingness to cheat and lie. And the is what it is, lying and cheating. It makes me wonder how many other things this person is willing to cheat and lie about. If you are not willing to do the job, don't take it on. 19. That’s so much crap. That’s like saying a jumper with 10000 jumps can fly your 757. You can't be aware of handling qualities you know nothing about. You can justify being in over your head any way you want but as a pilot you of all people should know better. Why do they start new pilots on planes like a C-152 and require so many hours and extra training to go to a single engine complex aircraft? That sounds familiar, "I can handle it." 20. That will usually happen if you cross the risers and load them, take the left and pull it to the right, take the right and pull it to the left. I think this would happen if the chest strap was not hooked up. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  21. Sec. 91.107 (3) Except as provided in this paragraph, each person on board a U.S.-registered civil aircraft (except a free balloon that incorporates a basket or gondola or an airship type certificated before November 2, 1987 must occupy an approved seat or berth with a safety belt and, if installed, shoulder harness, properly secured about him or her during movement on the surface, takeoff, and landing. (ii) Use the floor of the aircraft as a seat, provided that the person is on board for the purpose of engaging in sport parachuting; Just a thought, doing it does not make it legal or safe. 22. How much training did you have before you sat next to an open door? Because it is done does not make it legal or right. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  23. I don't do test jumps at 180 mph, that is what torso dummies are for. Just about every reserve canopy on the market today was tested with a load not less then 264 pounds at a speed not less then 180 KEAS, that’s 207 mph. And the same unit is tested three times at those figures. And as said before there is video of most of these tests. I have been involved in at least one test program where the canopy, a popular ram air reserve, was loaded at 376 pounds and dropped at 200 KEAS. I then did live jumps on the same canopy and did cutaways from a fully open main. Thats really low speed. All these test were done with a standard molar type bag in use through out the industry today. But remember, skydivers could screw up just about anything and all this testing does not mean that any given reserve will not turn to shit on the next deployment. Most canopy design is a compromise. If you design for high seed there is trade off in low speed. With out some really complicated reefing it is tough to have it both ways. I don't have any figures to support this, but it seems we have far more low speed reserve depolyments, less then 150 mph, then we to high speed, more than 150 mph. I know what the speed bag is supposed to do, and it may do that very well. What I question is the following statements” There seems to be a lack of any supporting information to what has been stated at fact. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  24. You are preaching to the choir. “Line dump” in my opinion does not exist or at the very least the term is misapplied. The only reason to stow the lines, in stow bands or in a pouch, is to stage the deployment sequence. How the lines are stowed does not effect how the canopy opens. The things that affect perceived “opening shock” are canopy design, slider design and placement during packing and speed and weight at deployment. As far as “bag strip” on a reserve I find it hard to picture the bag leaving today’s tight containers without the canopy leaving with it. I suppose it could happen but I have never seen it or talked to anyone who has. As fare as using the speedbag to prevent “line dump” or bag strip on a main I can’t see the reason. The P/C, bridle, bag and canopy are all connected. Where one goes the others will follow. I have over 1000 jumps on a main bag that used just 2 locking stows with the remainder of the lines in a pocket. The openings are always easy and on heading. My feeling is the center feed on the pocket helps prevent “bag whip” which can lead to poor openings. There was a time in the early 80’s where 1000’s of jumps were made on ram air canopies with the use of any deployment device. They were terminal deployments on plain un-reinforced F-111 type rip stop nylon. I will be the first to admit that thoughts on this could be all fu%*ed up. But I have not seen anyone produce any hard evidence to change my mind. As Mick said, if it can’t be seen on tape or film with the equipment available today, I find it hard to believe it exists.
