Raising minimum deployment altitude
mjosparky replied to hcsvader's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
While I am not adamantly against raising the AAD firing altitude I don’t see the need for it. My proposal is for better training during student and continued training by individual jumper after that. Skydiving is a high speed, high stress activity that does not tolerate hesitation or confusion. The reason someone would end up in the situation of the jumper in this incident is the jumper allowed it to happen. I am sure it was not intentional but was the result of losing situational awareness. This has killed jumpers since before I came into the sport and it will continue as long as people jump from airplanes. All this talk about trying to fix the problem by changing an electronic device or even inventing some new device is a failure to recognize the root cause to this type of event. It was caused by the jumper’s failure to start EP’s high enough. We never know why she did this but we do know she did not pull her reserve with enough altitude for it to open. To continue to stress changing the parameter of AAD’s will just reinforce device dependency in jumpers. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

You have not offered any more information or replied to any of the posts. I will that this to mean you have decided to hold off until your injury has healed. That or you left in a huff because you didn’t find the answer you were shopping for. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Cypres 2 incident from 2008 - WAS: Philosophy of banning the Argus
mjosparky replied to rhys's topic in Gear and Rigging
The post just before yours gives the number of SB issued by both companies. If you are interested is one specific one look it up. Argus SB are really hard to find since they do not show them on the web site. Cypres does. You say you know, what is your sourse? How come this in not gereral knowledge in the rigging community? First Argus and now you claiming it is all a conspiracy to bring down Aviacom. You might find some information here. http://www.conspiracyplanet.com/index.cfm Aviacom is a company that does 3D graphics, makes card readers, blue tooth devices and perfume bottles. It seems that the manufacture of AAD’s is a side line. http://www.aviacom.com/ Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Cypres 2 incident from 2008 - WAS: Philosophy of banning the Argus

Argus has had 11 SB since they came on the market I believe early in 2006. Cypres has had 11 SB since they first came out I believe in 1991. Argus web site is shut down for all practical purposes. Sparky http://www.argus-aad.com/ My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
First of all we are discussing the ARGUS AAD and what the other manufacture do is for another thread. As I understand it there have been 3 incidents in the recent past. Aviacom’s response to these problems has been weak at best. They always say the fault lies with someone else. The way they handle there customer base would be an embarrassment to most companies. I worked with pyrotechnic cutter is various shapes and sizes for almost 20 years. There are cutters on the market that will cut cleanly through Kevlar or a ½” cable. They can be electrically initiated or time delay. They can have an anvil or blade cutter bar. I can’t understand why they are having such a hard time coming up with one to work with their product. It appears they are not spec it right or are not testing it thoroughly. You can continue to defend them if you wish but think long and hard about jumping one. First, thank you what you are doing on my behalf. If we ever meet dinner and drinks on me. Having done a fair amount of demos in CA you will be hard pressed to find an area where you don’t have to file a COA with the local FSDO. It seems to get tighter every year. When you get ready to give it a go, get in touch with me and I will try and help out. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Aviacom has had cutter problems as far back as 2006. (see attachment 2) It is way past time for “harsh talk”. It is time to take action that will force this company to make the needed changes in their product or go away. And now they are going with the “conspiracy” defense. That’s lame. On thing that shows a glaring lack of attention to detail is that the first SB they put out on cutters in 2006 was not even dated. Wrong, that is the tail wagging the dog. The reason you have an instructor is so you can survive the learning period. You need to learn that the consequences of what you do almost always affect other people. In skydiving if you choose to ignore advice given by more experienced jumpers you can end up not just hurt but dead. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

"First Free Fall Rig" ~ FXC on Main and Cypres/Vigil on Reserve
mjosparky replied to Unstable's topic in Safety and Training
I am pretty sure, at least in the US, that would have been before AAD’s were addressed in Part 105. And many if not all did not follow manufactures guide lines. Used on a main they require a chamber test every 6 months. Most models also require a factory service every year. Having worked at a DZ that used them I learned they are a money pit. Slightly different take on state records
mjosparky replied to Beachbum's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not true. 1-1.4: Qualification Requirements A. To compete at a U.S. National Skydiving Championships and be eligible for nationals medals, competitors must— 1. Be a U.S. citizen or comply with paragraph B below ...... B. Competitors who are not U.S. citizens must possess a Resident Alien Card U.S. INS Card I-551, or an I-551 temporary stamp in their passport. But for the purpose of State records it could be really simple.... Ask to see a drivers license. Busted.......thats what I get for not reading the whole thing. If the cutter fires you will be way to low to manually put the reserve and expect it open before impact. I would expect a manufacture to understand this. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Down load this and read through it. You will go broke keeping up with the maintenance and inspection requirements. That is after you purchase the needed test equipment. Their deployment window can be up to 1000 feet +-. Sparky http://parachutemanuals.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=43&func=fileinfo&id=241 My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

John, For a team to earn a medal in the Nationals all members must be US citizens not just residents. If I remember right the Australian largest formation record was done at Perris. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
wingsuit landing without parachute project

If you notice they are not very popular. In fact I can’t think of a single one in service. After several test periods it was found out that thin people fell like a rock and fat people would receive up to 3rd. degree burns from friction generate by the tube. Even using trained personnel they were not safe above 5 or 6 floors. That put the people trapped within reach of aerial ladders and rescue buckets. I am sure there are people reading this that are sure what these guys are talking about. This is an “L Bar”. Used by the Air Force and Army to attack canopies to the risers. http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp55/mjosparky/Skydiving/LBar.jpg This is a “Navy” speed link. As the name suggests it is used by the Navy to attach canopies to the riser. http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp55/mjosparky/Skydiving/SpeedLink.jpg And this is a Rapide Link or sometimes referred to a French link. They came into use when square canopies with their fewer and smaller lines became popular. A real Rapide link will be stamed with the name. The big hurdle I see is transitioning from his head first position to a feet first position. Speed skiers land a set of skies allowing their legs to absorb some of the impact. If he gives up that wing suit for just an instant he will be a rock. Look at his decent rate on the video between :40 and :50. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
What are you doing with your argus?
mjosparky replied to Jbag's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
They have had a problem with cutters since at least 2006. That seems to be more than enough time to fix the “problem”. Anyone who is still willing to champion them is not paying attention to the facts. Here are some links to read through. The key word is "approved". If it is not approved by either the Administrator or the manufacture it is illegal. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Hmmm... On metal rapide links which connect lines to risers, we put a small line of red nail polish or paint along the nut and the link. That way if the nut starts to unthread itself, it's readily visible because the paint marks will no longer be aligned. I'm thinking it might be possible to do the same thing with paint on a ripcord pin and cable, so that any slippage would be noticed. Is this a viable idea? If the telltale on a rapide link is damaged, you can easily check it and remark as needed. What would happen if the mark on the ripcord was physically damaged by something other than cable slippage? Would you toss the ripcord? On the other hand, I don't like to take shots at your idea without offering an alternative for consideration. So, how about this? Put a the cable through a swageable ball before putting it in the pin. Swage the pin. Push the ball so it touched the pin and swage the ball. Since the ball has no stress on it, it is unlikely to move. So if you get a gap between the ball and the pin, the cable has moved, and you reject the ripcord. That would get the job done once and for all, wouldn't it? This couldn’t be done in the field. It would require a action by the manufacture due to the TSO.
