  1. We have a little bit in common. I am a retired Firefighter and I have given up jumping. And as you know Firefighters tend to have problems with relationships. Don’t why. After 30 years and around 3,000 jumps I woke up one day and said that enough. I guess there were a variety of reasons but they added up to “time to quit”. This is a decision you and you alone can make. One thing to keep in mind, the sky will always be there if want it. On the other matter I am probably the last person to give advice relationships but what the hell. If you decide to back of jumping now would be a good time to focus on putting the marriage back on a solid footing. You mentioned indifference, that can be a two way street and you may not even realize it. Try picking her up at work and take her to a nice lunch. Have dinner ready when she gets home. See if you can find some type of recreational activity that you can enjoy together. Skiing, bike riding, hitting the flea markets or under BB stacking. Just make sure it is something she wants to do. Good luck with what ever path you take. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. In most cases I have seen students are taught the “monkey see, monkey do” method of packing. They need to be taught the different parts of the canopy, suspension lines, control lines, risers, slider and pilot chute and bag, and how they interact with each other. Teach them that the “A” lines meet the “B” lines about half way down and continue to the riser at a single line. They need to learn to recognize a step through or other tangles a canopy can end up in. How to do a quick line check, check pilot chute and bag attachment and untwist the break lines. I know this takes more time but if the student understands a canopy learning to pack it is not such a hassle. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. And I don't need one to travel in the 50 United States, but if I leave them I need a passport. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  5. Since when are you an old fart? Being an "old fart" isn't a matter of age alone. If you think: People should find what they are looking for by looking where it's published. People should follow rules and recommendations People are responsible for each other, at least to a certain degree, and should do their best to stop stupid people from doing stupid things (not always possible to do, but we should at least try) People should use common sense and common courtesy as much as possible Well, then you are probably an "old fart". What you have described is what used to considered normal behavior in just about any civilized society in the world. You see much less of this behavior now and probably even less will be seen in the future. Sad. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. Has anyone posted probably the most important paperwork for a traveling jumper to have? A valid passport from their home country. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  10. Yes, early Para-Flite ram air canopies had a tab/loop on the center of tail top skin. It was about 10/12 inches from the tail seam and you would put a stow band in it. After you had flaked and wrapped the canopy you would bring the slider up and put a bite of it in the stow band. It didn’t work that well because it prevented the slider from catching air before the cells stated to fill. Back then a slider was a slider and had very little relationship to the canopy size in was on. Another strange thing was the d-bag was made by the canopy manufacture and delivered with the canopy. 12. +1 None of us know it all, in skydiving or life in general. If you don't learn something new everyday you are just taking up space. Sparky Hey Lady I still owe you dinner. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. Chad, I really don’t have a good answer for you. After making a couple of calls and doing some reading I can offer a SWAG but that is all it is, a guess. I am guessing that because of the size of you main you are using a large PC, maybe 32/34” range. With your size and a large PC what you probably were feeling was “snatch force” and not opening shock. The differential speeds developed between your body and canopy mass, the inflated PC and related air mass momentum become very important at the moment of line stretch. That is when all of that is re-accelerated to the speed of the load, you. If the speed difference is substantial it will spank you pretty good. That is “snatch force”. My guess and it is just that a guess is the double stows in some way are slowing down or delaying line stretch just enough to reduce felt snatch force. Once you reach line stretch the deployment sequence is over and inflation/opening sequence starts followed with deceleration. These actions are independent of deployment and not affected by line stows or the bag. The inflation sequence and deceleration are dictated by design, fill time, reefing and canopy size. I hope this helps more than confuses. I am much better and knowing information than I am at trying to explain it. Stay safe. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  17. Using a smaller PC or one that collapses will help reduce felt snatch force/opening shock. When the bagged canopy reaches line stretch it is accelerated back to the speed of the load. The greater the differential speed and greater the drag and air mass momentum at line stretch the greater the felt snatch force/opening shock. An open PC adds to drag and air mass momentum that must be overcome for this to happen. Try and use the smallest PC that will lift the bagged canopy out of the container. Once it is out of the container and moving it produces enough drag to reach line stretch on its own. As Hookit stated line stows do not affect opening shock. You are dealing with two things. One is staging and the other metering. Staging is used for a neat and orderly deployment of components and metering is to control the speed of deployment/opening. Nothing that happens before the canopy comes out of the bag has any affect on inflation or opening. Your slider is part of the metering during inflation/opening. If it is not up against the stops it effectiveness at controlling inflation speed is greatly reduced. I have over 1,000 jumps on a main deployment bag built to contain the canopy and lines exactly like the reserve free bag. I use a 245 Sharpchuter which is a heavy canopy and never had a problem with “line dump” or “bag strip”. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. And that’s fine for you, if you are willing to subject yourself to the additional risk. But should you put it out there as good advice for the younger jumpers to follow? I don’t think so. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
