Tandem Masters that don't give thier students a ripcord, why?
douwanto replied to LawnDart21's topic in Instructors
less and less for their money based on What. I had a student ask me one time Why are you telling me this as I tought him about the handle and altui. He said thats what I am paying you for. If he wanted to learn he would have sighned up for AFF. I never give my first jump tandems a handle or even breif them on it unless they really want to pull and I have time to give a completebreifing. Even then If I dont feel they will succeed I wont let them pull. I too have had 14000 deploymentby a student. I ask my students if they want to and if they do I will dress for success. I havent had a first time student really want to pull in months. More people will and do return you to further their skydiving carrers if we share the beauty, excitement and pleasure of our world. Dont give them the responcability of saving their own life while sharing those things with them for the first time. most just want to ride the ride the first time. Hi Richard, I had the opportunity to make several jumps on the 340 when I went through my TE course last year. Damn nice Canopy. I jumped it in the Micro Sigma and fell in love with it. I put 420 LBS under it not including the rig (not sure what the Micro weighs) and stood up the landing with little wind. Toggle pressure was minimal and response was wonderful. I recommend the Sigma 340 Highly . you wont be disappointed. I fly the Aerodyne A2 #50 and Love it as Well. It is not as High performance as the 340. I fly it aggressive an it does every thing I want or need from a solid all around tandem canopy. Price is why I have it in both of my rigs. You cant go wrong with either. I would recommend setting a minimal Tandem number for the 340 because of its quick solid response and overall elliptical feel. Hope this helps JM2C Chris Whitley Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421

If you can't land a tandem yourself you shoudn't be an TM.
douwanto replied to camamel's topic in Instructors
Aggie the 370 is so much lighter than the 384. I am still jumping 1 ez384 in 1 rig and have an A2 350 in my other rig. A2 is awesome and light toggle pressure but the beast EZ keeps me in shape. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421 -

The set 400 is the only Tandem Canopy I have fount myself able to collapse with the toggels also spin up with not very aggressive toggle input. I agree completly with the original post. If you require assistance from your student to land then you should not be doing tandems. I am not saying if you allow them to help. That is your choice. If you can not land a Tandem without their help you need to STOP doing tandems. I saw where someone in this thread said thats why the togle has 2 loops. They are for training. If you havent been stiff armed yet you will at some point by a student who just does not respond to you. I need my legs and back to walk and work so I am very careful with who I allow to assist me on landings especialy on a first tandem. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421 -

I jump the A2 350 and cant spin it up. I guess I could with some very very agressive canopy flying. My point is I dont think a TI should be able to spin a tandem canopy up with normal input or even being a little agressive. The 400 comes around rather easy and limits your options in reflex situations. just my 2 cents. I fly my A2 very hard and enjoy sharing that part of our sport with those passengers who want too. 182 right foot right foot over the top. 206 cargo roll out 206 front door same as 182. otter any way I want to. King Air front flips gainer poised . Caravan same as otter. listen if you can get out there and stable within 5 seconds youve done nothing wrong. if you do flips on purpose they are not unstable. if you do them because they just happened then you suck. We all have an exit from time to time that is uncontroled the differance is those who are comfortable with exits other than poised are more likely to flow right to stability rather than freak out. You need to clarify what scary means to you. Is the TI using the Drouge to get stable or is the TI fliping on every exit and if so what type of aircraft is in use???? See were I am going with this?? As a rule stable exits require possative launch meaning the instructor pushes himself and passenger into the relative wind. some aircraft are not well suited for these type exits and take more time to understand the best exit procedures. What works on 1 may only cause more instability on others. If you beleave an Instructor is unsafe you should address it with your S&AT and DZO giving specific examples and video where available. Would you do a tandem with your wife as a passenger ?
douwanto replied to vidiot's topic in Instructors
I cant find the vote here button but YES My wife was my first paid passenger. Knowing what I know now and having grown a lot over the last 5.5 years I would have taken her after aquiring some real skill and knowledge but oh isint ignorance bliss. I know I thought I was the shit. What a dumb ass we are when we are baby's at anything. Now I wouldnt think twice, I take someones wife mother brother sister father child every day. If I dont beleave I can then I need to quit. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421 -

Your only purpose from the time you decide you will take that person on a skydive untill they walk away safe is their safety. I love to tell them that they will be ok because if it happens to them it happens to me and that gives tham something tangable to think. We know that isnt true. Never take someone you think you can get down safe. You better fucking know. I am prepared to do everything uncluding give my life to protect them. You will understand when they shove their feet at the ground on landing or go fetal out the door. There should be nothing that they can do to cause you problems. Learn from every jump and be ready for anything. I still experiance new stuff all the time. Yes the money can be great but tandem is about the passenger not a paycheck. If you are too tired to be 100% sit your ass on the ground and never let a DZO intimadate you into doing one if you are not 100%. IT WILL HAPPEN AND YOU AND ONLY YOU WILL BE RESPONCIBLE WHEN YOU HURT SOMEONE. All that said remember if you are tense they will know it. You can get almost anyone out of the plane if you take the time to interact and impart confidance into them. Share something about you or your family with them and dont be afraid to shut the up jumpers down if they are fucking with someone who is already scared and waivering. Chris. I do them constantly from the time I grab the rig to the time I pull the droug release. I also watch the cutaway and reserve handles under canopy. I also instruct my students to keep thier hands belowe thier shoulders after opening. nothing worse than seeing your student grab the cutaway and or the reserve handle after opening. I do 1 in freefall on every jump. Being an Examinor I tend to watch for handle checks on mine and others video's. I find that most TI's dont do handle checks. I travel a lot and always take time to remind instructors about the value of handle checks. most times it is well recieved but some times I get that who the fuck do you think you are attitutide. It is funny when I jump some where new and the camera guy backs off expecting me to deploy because he isnt used to seeing TI's touch their handles. Tandem Instructor Poll: Student Harness Adjustment
douwanto replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
I am with Chuch on this one. My students dont get on the plane unless the harness is tight and ready to skydive. The same goes for me rig, I will not board the plane until the rig is fully adjusted for my skydive(no loose leg straps or loose chest strap). I also check the harness on the way to alltitude and make tighten any thing that has moved right before hookup. After the laterials are as tight as I can get them I take up to 2 inches out of the main lift web if needed. If the hup junction is on the hip this wont affect the arch. If it is more foward it will. so I keep that in mind. on the. new sigma harness the back adjustments that go to the leg straps can and will move when the student sits and moves. They should always be checked just prior to hook up and exit. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421 -
Never with a student. The instructor has know way to communicate with the hanger if there is a problem( drogue wraped around students foot or detached or deflated ) these are only a few there are more reasons the TI may need to deploy early or instantly. I beleave the force of the trapdoor is enough to severly hurt the passenger and the hanger. I guess some TI's and their friends may beleave they are bullet proof and have the right to put their student in that kind of danger. I know I dont have that right. I dont hold anything on my students eather. I dont see the need for it. As for showing them My altimeter I would not do that eather. Just gives them something bright and shiney to grab and hold. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421
