Damn once again duece is the man. The only way to cook mudcat and I repeat the only way is deep fry it in bacon fat and cornmeal. We also had some issues with the Barret but after talking and working with them they were resolved. A few guys even went to the factory and learned how to make the barrels themselves from stock to a finished product. ------------------------------------------------------------ Thats what I do lou, anyone with a relatively working knowledge of engine lathes and boring bars can do it. I built all of my barrels using 416 stainless. Bore it rough with a spade blade to .500, use a butterfield hone and run it out to .510 and your there. I cut my rifling with a homemade boring bar, single point cutter, and used the thread attatchment to push it thorugh. It kinda tricky to get your thread counter set right as I cut a 1:16.5 twist which is fast as hell on your threader. Spin the lathe as slow as it will go (66 rpm on my chicago) and you can only cut about .001 each pass. I forget how deep I cut the rifling but I have it in my notes if anyone wants to know. Only problem I have is all my barrels are 45" and the boring bar wants to walk a little bit when its out that far from your tool bar. I made some pretty nifty bushings that slide on the outside of the boring bar and inside the barrel as its cutting to help keep it from chattering. Seems to work pretty good actually. I did bend one bar severly trying to hog a cut too much, I thing I was taking around .005 or so at a time and it just proved to be too much.Got some pictures if anyone needs to see it to give you a better idea of how to set it up. I heard you can also cut the barrels from 4140 chromoly, but I have yet to find a piece of stock big enough to try it. Rumor amongst the guys at the range last shoot was there is a joker experimenting with some carbon fiber stuff. Sounds like b.s to me but you never know. I have seen smaller stuff out of carbon fiber and I actually seen a .600 nitro express with a cf barrel but he never fired it(wonder why). I doubt if your hand would survive the recoil of firing a .50 caliber pistol loaded with Browning Heavy Machine Gun ammunition. ------------------------------------------------------------ Actually milspec ammo is one of the lighter loads. The round was designed to operate at just enough pressure back thorugh the gas tubes to cycle the reciever for another round. I think the last nato >50 stuff I bought was like a 665 grain bullet, 225 garin on the powder and had a pressure of like 18, 600 psi or something pathetic like that. I know my 750 grain handloads I use are somewhere in the neighborhood of 33 to 34 thousand psi. Its is not illegal in california to posses .50 cal ammo nor is it illegal to posses a .50 cal. you just have to channel through atf and register the weapon as a competition armorment, and register yourself as the competitor. I currently have 3 barrett 82a1m's, 2 arma-lite ar-50's and 2 cobb fa50's and all are registered right here in california. Now for the catch, no ammo may be bought in california or shipped to via mail order. So any round has to be handloaded, which if you are shooting registered shoots on a 1000 yard range your handloading anyways. There are a lot of myths and restrictions on california gun laws, just do what I did. If you got no felonys, clean purchase history, just get yourself a FFL. only costs you about 500 a year and saves a lot of paperwork and headaches. plus you can do your own transfers and atf paperwork which will cost you about 50 bucks a pop for the transfer and about 20 bucks for the registration. Down side here is you pay state and local taxes on every gun you buy because its considered non retail if you register the weapon to yourself. The problem I see most here in cali is the police. They are trained if a gun holds more than what came with it from the factory, fires other than semi or single, it is illegal. And thats not always the case as anyone who lives here and owns a gun has more knowledge than most law enforcement officials. When you enter a gunu store, there is always certain section that has been reserved for law enforcement only firearms. meaning that any gun in that section or any gun with a red and white atf tag is to be purchased strictly by law enforcement only!!! PERIOD. Well if you have a FFL, that supercedes all and the gun can go right in your hot little hand, no waiting on the 10 day period, you do the yellow atf questionaire, copy of your license and away you go. Also the state department of justice says you cannot purchase more than one handgun every 30 days, get an FFL and thats gone by the wayside as well.
