How do you teach Emergancy Procedures (Cutting Away)
Ron replied to TheRanchPROshop's topic in Instructors
Happened to me.... The only cutaway I have that I used both hands to find the cutaway. Here is that story But if it had been my reserve, I would most likely be dead. This is one reason I (R) look/grab, (L) look/grab, ARCH, (R) peel punch, and when I feel/see the canopy go I peel punch (L). I know very few people that can look at the reserve while having a mal and still arch. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Which way were you taught originally? I see lots of people that try to switch methods revert back to their original training. I have used one hand on each handle 10 or so times... Only once did I ever have to use two hands on the cutaway and I still pulled the reserve with just one hand. Hell, I started a thread about it hoping people like you would learn from the mistakes we have made... You just can't accept that we have been where you are, and have seen people act like you before. I have noticed that you *said* you were following Brian's advice.... But seem to have ignored when I posted that you clearly were not. Just like you kept claiming that you were done here over and over and over? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Two things worth repeating.... I also see he has not answered either And I asked him this several times.... He ignored it then also: Very few people that die in this sport think they will die in this sport. Well, lets be honest... I was teaching the SL FJC when I had 100 jumps. That was with a SL JM.... About the same as a coach rating. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

You may consider it a "scam", but I can see the benefits. It puts a student in freefall so they can experience it with little responsibilities. They get hands on, one on one canopy coaching. In fact, I have taken a few people who just do not seem to "get" canopy control on a tandem and they were able to understand many concepts they "knew", but were unable to put into practice. I personally, think it is a great idea to have a tandem or tunnel before AFF. As an AFFI I have seen problem students get much better after a Tandem or some tunnel. So for a DZ to require one, IMO, is not a scam. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Been using 3.5k for 4way and 4k for 8way or larger for 16 years. I pull around 2.2-2.5 and have been doing that for >4k jumps. Just because YOU don't approve does not mean it is "stupid". I am betting he made more jumps than you this weekend. Personally, I flew about 4 hours in the wind tunnel. And his comment was that the thread HAD died for 4 days till YOU posted your rant. YOU brought the topic back.... ONLY YOU. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Uh, Ian is on the swoop team for PD. Honestly, he knows more about canopy flight than most every will. Pretty much not an idiot. This time you didn't. That does not mean next time will have the same result. You can claim that... But until you actually land with both handles it is just a claim. Lots of people have claimed to know them... Yet the incident reports say all those people were not correct. Better skydivers than you have gotten hit and hit others. That does not mean it will never happen. Your continuing to try and prove your point says otherwise. That comment screams "I know more than you. You are all idiots". YOU are the one that can let this post die.... Just quit typing and it will drift far away into the back pages. And it will only be brought back if you bring it up, or get hurt under canopy. As others have said... Learn to land by sight and then use the Alti as a back up. Alti's fail more often than eyes. Alti's are normally more accurate, but you should be able to land without using one. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

No. You are changing the trim of the canopy and that can lead to a collapse. In turbulence the best thing to do is full flight and be ready to use the brakes to correct any issues. On older big canopy's a little brakes can help keep the canopy inflated, but it is not needed on most modern canopy's. No it is possible. They grab the left with both hands and pull. And in free fall that can take the rest of your life. Sure we have.. you just ignored and insulted them. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Except the people that have burned in looking for the reserve handle that shifted after the cutaway and they spent the rest of their lives looking for it. You are entitled to an opinion, but to claim anyone that does not agree with you as wrong is a bit over the top. Update.... NO REGISTRATION FEE!!!!! Johnny emailed and said that he decided at the last min to not have a registration... OK, there might be more to the story than that, but hey, you pay NOTHING and can win stuff! "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Pro's and Con's Ohio vs. California DZ's
Ron replied to jump2live's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You live in CA.... Is there a DZ close to where you live? If so, I would look it up on the DZ database and see what people have to say about it. That would be my first choice. If you just have a desire to travel... Keep on keeping on.... "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -
I logged my military jumps... But I already had 1500 jumps so I didn't care about the license stuff. Now, I don't personally think a guy with 20 military S/L's and 7 AFF's should be qualified to get an "A" license.... But a guy with 1000 jumps logging those 20 S/L's do not seem to be a big deal. Unless that person happens to collide with me and kill me while he exercises his right to be cool. I think people are free do do pretty much as they please.... Until they affect someone else. If some guy with 100 jumps wants a ST97 and they are jumping their own plane on their own property alone.... Have a great time! But put a guy that is above his head in an otter with 20 other people and the story changes. I am not too worried about a guy killing himself (well, I actually am... But people have the right to be stupid). I AM worried about someone killing someone else. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/fatalities/search.cgi?fatal_category=Collision There are a bunch of people that are dead due to someone else's mistake. Off the top of my head, I have lost three friends to canopy collisions. I'd hate to die cause someone wanted to be cool. I hate going to funerals because someone wanted to be cool.
