  1. I'd jump somewhere else. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  2. You being a student.... I would not let you wear anything that has not been approved. This would mean that someone with some exp would have to have used those and reported to me that they worked fine with no issues. Truth be told... I might not let you use them even then. 1. I don;t know how they are going to "fly" in freefall. 2. I would not let you were tinted glasses. Also, 110 dollars would almost buy an alti and a cheaper pair of goggles...... It is not like you are gonna look cool since you still have to wear a protec and a student jumpsuit.... Save the cool guy shades till you have a license. 3. I have to disagree.... Having done a bunch of tunnel/AFF instructing I find the students that go through that type of program normally progress through the levels much faster. It does not matter in the long run, but 10 mins of tunnel is like making 10 freefalls with very little time between "jumps". One such program was 10 mins of tunnel and the student started with L3 Another was 30 mins of tunnel and then started with L4. I have had a guy do ALL the maneuvers for ALL levels of AFF on the first jump (Except pulls). He had two hours of tunnel. If you are close to a tunnel, there is very little reason NOT to incorporate tunnel into the program, IMO. 4. Yes, video is almost always worth it. And as there is an exception to every rule.... Here is my exception: If paying for the video is going to make it so you can't afford a second jump, skip the video and make the extra jump. Video will help you, but only through jumping will you actually learn. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  5. Or TK could have been doing tandems many years ago when the mains were not as reliable as they have become in recent years. I have 3 tandem chops in 500-600(?) tandem jumps. And being multi rated, I can also say that all three were on the same brand system.... So really it is 3 chops in ~300-400 Tandems on that system. AND btw... All three were tension knots. 6. I would do DeLand or Zhills. But being in Orlando, I would also do the tunnel. I used to take students to the tunnel and then to Zhills to jump the rest of the day. It is a very productive method of training. Sally Hathaway runs tunnel camps (Tunnelcoach.com) and coaches in Zhills. Chromy is a very skilled coach that does both and works out of DeLand. 7. You can't see how asking if it is relevant??? REALLY???? Fact is as TK has pointed out that in 20 tandem reserve rides he had two that he would have been better to keep the main (his words). So asking someone if they would have a different opinion of cutting away if this had ended with a worse reserve issue is relevant. I am honestly amazed you can't see that. And how, sometimes, parachutes just don't work correctly. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  8. It can be creative editing. With a HC I do a handles check... It is not often seen on the video handed to the customer since we go back to the exit shot before the handles check and show the exit again and then cut back AFTER the check is complete. 9. 1. I like to teach. I'd prefer to do AFF, but there is not a bunch of that every weekend. 2. You get to give someone an experience they will never forget. 3. It can be very challenging between long periods of boring.... 4. The little bit of extra cash funds a Roth (+ some) every year. 10. It was a question... Don't blame me you are not smart enough to know the difference. They called it a test canopy... I guess you know more than them? And since they called me and talked to me about it... I guess they don't know what they are talking about huh? Believe it or not, companys make changes to designs... I know a crazy idea. 11. Get an AAD. Then don't make dumb jumps because you have one. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  12. What he does is flares and GAINS altitude. He then does not just *hold* the rears and wait, he is constantly pulling them down and letting them up to maintain the altitude he wants . Then when he is risking a stall, he goes to toggles. So it is a DYNAMIC flare, even on the rears. He does not just pull them down and then finish the flare later.... He IS flaring the entire time (To include letting off when needed). You seem to be focusing on that it MUST be a two stage flare with a pause in the middle. I am focusing on it being a smooth flare from start to finish. When you land a plane, you do not flare part of the way and then stop and wait then continue (unless you flared too soon to start). At any rate, it is clear we are not going to agree.... And I don't care enough to go round and round anymore. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  13. Then why teach a two stage flare when you can teach a true dynamic flare? Because you are describing a dynamic flare in your posts. You just seem to think it has to have two parts, when in reality it does not. You do not see them partially flare and then finish the stroke. They flare to maintain altitude throughout the flare. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  14. I am sure that I do... I just do not agree with it. Then why teach it as opposed to teaching a way does work? Do you think a rote memorization and execution is better than a dynamic flare based on feedback received from the jumpers speed and decent rate? I don't. Speaking of Flight-1.... How many of them do you see doing a two stage flare on landing? Or do they do a smooth flare based on feedback of the current situation? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  15. I don't.... I teach the jumper to be an active participant in the flare, not just some semi-trained monkey doing "A" then "B". I teach that the rate of flare should equal the speed towards the ground with the hands ending up at full flare as their feet are ~1 foot off the ground. 16. I didn't ask for support, I asked you a simple question. Two others understood that and found it very easy to answer without adding all the BS you felt was needed to act superior. Next time, try answering the simple question without feeling you have something to prove.... If you are able. 17. Got it.... You can only act like a three year old that thinks he knows everything. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  18. It was a simple question.... If you are unable to answer it, maybe you should quit skydiving now before you face a difficult one. Care to try again or just act like a know it all? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  19. And if he had chopped and the reserve was a bag lock.... And we had these pictures of him flying this main. What would you say then???? Would your opinion change? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  20. Well, that depends on you and your attitude. But.... Don't kid yourself for a second, you can easily die on any jump. Anyone that tries to tell you this is 'safe' is lying to either you or themselves to make themselves feel better. People die every year, not to many of them thought they would die. See, this is a case of cognitive bias... You are old, so you assume everyone else is also old . I just happened to have started at a young age. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

I do not, nor ever had, a coach rating..... I was grandfathered in due to having a SL rating. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

I don't have a coach rating.... Can I still bitch about it? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  24. True, and it is not like I would ask you what you made last year..... But a guy asking what a DZ pays for "X" is a bit different IMO. And as always, you have the ability yo just not answer. I just felt bashing a guy over asking the question was a bit much. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  25. I see nothing wrong with a guy asking a question about pay. I don't personally think it is worth attacking a guy over... "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
