I have bad news for you....According to your pictures you are cute. Sorry, I tried to break that to you the easiest way I could. Now that brings both good and bad. The good is...Well at least you are not ugly, and all the money you would have to spend on cosmetic surgery can be blown on skydiving. It also means that you are going to get more attention at the DZ than an ugly girl, or any guy. The bad? Well you will be hounded by horny adrenaline hopped up jumpers. (May be good if you like that kinda thing) Being a hot chick on a DZ means you will never have to jump alone. It also means that well meaning horny adrenaline hopped up young studs are gonna try their best to make you happy and maybe get to be your "special friend". This means they will try to help you and try to "be there" for you. It means that while they try to score points in the hopes of getting to do the horizontal bop with you they will put you into dives that you might not be safe on, or you might not feel safe on. The simple answer is either: 1. Get fat and ugly really quick. Maybe start eating deep fried twinkies for every meal...That will do wonders for your waist size and complexion. 2. Never go on a dive you don't feel good about no matter how much the "young stud" tells you that you will be fine. #1 is bad for your health, #2 is good for your health. Well then the USPA should do something about it huh? The thing is I know plenty of "qualified" canopy coaches that don't do anything on a weekend. The knowledge is out there, people refuse to seek it. Nope, but if the people know what they are doing, are under a resonable WL for their experience and still screw up...thats human nature. I am all about people being allowed to make mistakes. I am not all about people thinking they know what they are doing, and not listening to advice, doing as they damn well please just cause they can. Accidents are gonna happen...This is a high speed high risk sport. But what sickens me is the people who don't bother to learn how to do it and try it. A *good* instructional tandem will cover all of that. Its just with an instructional tandem you don't need to have the student demonstraight the procedures, or retain all the knowledge. Let me be clear, there is a big difference between a Tandem and an Instructional Tandem as part of a program. Thats about normal...I have seen lots of Tandem AFF and SL students never come back. Ignore the video since it would cost more to have video of the AFF as well. Think about the time commitment between AFF and Tandem. The SL program is cheaper...Well when I started they were the same 140 or 150. But you also don't get to freefall. I had a ton of students leave because they thought that there would be more and even telling them that freefall is comming was not enogh for them. People want it NOW. And I think thats one reason that the SL program is dying, Its not instant gratification. Still only a fool would not recognize that and adjust the plan. Not gonna flame you, its a great question. A Tandem does several really good things. 1. It allows a person who wants to "just do it once" to do it without wasting their time, or an Instructors time with 4-6 hours of ground school, and it is cheaper for the one time student. 2. It gives a very controled first exposure to freefall. Some people freak out...I'd rather have a person freak out strapped to me than me just holding on for their saftey. 3. Great exposure to freefall body position, turns, and tracking. Can't get much better than me moving your hands. 4. It counts as a level of instruction now in the USPA ISP program as good as an AFF level one, maybe better. 5. No better way to teach canopy control than with an Instructor right there talking to you and teaching you things like the pattern, "magic spot", holding area, and possible outs. I have taken AFF students up on a Tandem to "fix" their canopy control issues. I think its better for the DZ in saving time, better for the student in that it is cheaper and faster, plus it is a way to give GREAT hands on instruction.
