  1. Karel and William at ARGUS are updating the service bulletin right now, which should be released shortly...and it will clearly address all its older-style cutters. But basically, any Argus installed in a rig that has the old-style cutter between the PC and flap grommet should be replaced before the next jump. All other rigs with other cutter locations should have the old-style Argus cutter replaced at the next repack. Mike ChutingStar.com
  2. The service bulletin isn't all that clear in its present form...because in the first line the subject title states "Mandatory cutter replacement in Mirage rigs." and then states later in the background section that "...we decided to replace the cutters in all the Mirage rigs..." But then in the comments section of the service bulletin, it states "...all Argus cutters manufactured before November 2006...must be mandatory replaced..." But is that referring to cutters just in Mirage rigs or all rigs? I think the language in the beginning of the bulletin just needs to be cleaned up...and I've talked to Karel about that...so it's clear that the company does want to replace ALL older Argus cutters in ALL rigs...and that this is because of an issue that first came to its attention in a Mirage rig...but could occur in other rigs. Blah, blah, blah...etc., etc., etc. Does this all make sense? Mike ChutingStar.com
  3. See this letter from Mirage dated 29Sep06 that is available on the Argus web site and approves the installation in Mirage when following the Argus manual: http://www.argus-aad.com/media/Downloads/Mirage%20Argus%20Approval%20Letter.pdf The cutter insert was damaged at some point during the compression of closing or by the loop rubbing against the insert. The insert obviously was not very durable, hence the service bulletin and change in cutters. While this instance did occur in a Mirage, I don't think the problem is limited to a Mirage, or to any rig with the cutter located between the PC grommet and a flap grommet. It's definitely a location that leaves the cutter more prone to damage, but this old Argus cutter in other rigs and in other locations could have the same fate. I would like to see Argus replace all of its older cutters with inserts with the new insertless cutter...and I think you'll see that. Mike ChutingStar.com

  8. I'll be giving a Mirage reserve container packing/closing seminar. In fact that reminds me that the computer I had two years ago with the PowerPoint document for this crashed and the file is gone. I need to completely remake that presentation...which should give it a fresh perspective with updated tips. Mike ChutingStar.com
  9. FYI (RAWA helmet options), RAWA makes a standard open-face helmet (Freefly Estilo) that is not designed for camera-mounting ($200). RAWA also makes a camera helmet (Freefly Imagem) with a flat top, side-mounted camera-specific box and chin cup ($360). The camera helmet can be purchased without the camera box ($260). And then the camera box can be purchased later ($140). Mike ChutingStar.com
  10. I haven't personally seen a Safire2 139 fit into a MT...it sounds a bit too big to me. If you do get it to fit, you will probably be damaging the stiffeners in the main container flaps to get it closed. Get the next container size up...an MO...which will be tight with the 139, but at least you won't be damaging the container stiffeners. Mike ChutingStar.com
  11. Yes, the main tray fits from a Crossfire 89 to 119. Mike ChutingStar.com

  14. FWIW, I have a Vigil IR setup on its own computer in the loft. I dowloaded a number of Vigils this past weekend without having to "butcher" the rigs. These were all Vectors and Sigmas though...where you can easily remove the control unit to upload. For those rigs without easy access, an upload of the info can be done during the inspection/repack. I've had the Vigil IR for a few months, but could never get it to install properly on my Mac...so I pulled an old PC out of the closet and set it up for this purpose only.
  15. Right......that machine has been a pain for the last few years, but I think we've finally isolated the problems and it should be sewing sweet by the end of this weekend...if MEL shows up.
  16. Yay!!! My Singer 143W2, Consew 195RB and harness machine are all calling your name...loudly. And thanks so much for the repaired needle bar for the Pfaff 3334...it was back in service for a reline that same day. Thanks... Mike ChutingStar.com
  17. Ummmm...that would be a big fat no. But we have a lot of fun...isn't that all it takes to feed Ella and keep a roof over the Paulsens' heads? Mike ChutingStar.com
  18. Or continued education for senior/master riggers. Industrial sewing machine maintenance/repair is high on my list since I'm having trouble getting a certain DPRE named MEL to come help me (again) with a couple of trouble machines. Anyway, sign me up...whatever the course material, I'm interested. Mike ChutingStar.com
  19. Right...funny how that reserve ride happened on the day before your reserve was going to be out of date. I know you probably rigged up that Nitro to have those 4 lines break on opening. You like testing out how the Nitro flies sans the middle A/B lines, eh? But yes, your reserve has been inspected/repacked and is ready to jump. Thanks for untwisting the freebag bridle...you rock! Now I just need Beezy to come through with the new HMA lineset for your Nitro and you'll be set for the weekend...woohoo! Mike ChutingStar.com
  20. If you're not doing it already, starting with clean lines under tension will help. And what I mean by that is I run packing paddles between the front/rear risers and steering lines from the links to the slider grommets at a few time during the packing process on the ground...such as before making the s-folds in the canopy to place it in the freebag, after the canopy is in the freebag...and maybe after the first two closing stows. 21. _____________________________________ That's exactly why, I mentioned he should contact the manufacturer and give the serial number of the harness container. All that information is right there under that number in their files. That way, there are no mistakes. That's why, manufacturer's keep records. Chuck And a side note on the advice of buying Velocity Sports risers for Mirage as well as an RSL. VSE RSL setups are on the right, while the Mirage setup is on the left. You would need to inform VSE of the different RSL side if you chose to "save money" by buying another manufacturer's risers. (If you have an RSL.) If you live by the ocean or you plan on pond swooping, you will want stainless to prevent oxidation from the moisture. Long story short, I would order Mirage risers from the manufacturer or a dealer who can use your serial number to make sure you get the correct part...and get you the appropriate options for your needs. 22. It's $15, per jump, for gear rental. If you pack your own rental parachute, you get $5 back (for the packjob). Hope that clears it up a bit. Mike ChutingStar.com
