What make a good skydiver?
JohnMitchell replied to WhiteMongoose's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think it's totally mental. And so are we.. .. -
Can't think of anything better to do in my spare time.

Nice pic, Twardo. I read that piece of yours about your dad at Remagen bridge.

DOOOOOOOOOOR (etiquette and safety)

And a damn cool shirt. I got a few of dem. And nice video. I noticed they didn't cover "how to kick the door right off the damn skyvan." That's a different video, I think. -
Funny thing, we played shuffle board as kids, painted on the patio. That and croquet. Guess my parents were giving us life skills for the old folks home.

Thanks for my best laugh of a very funny day. Can't wait to get my AARP card and wear black socks and wingtips with my shorts at the beach.

You're quite right on this one. Want to create good jobs and rebuild America? -

Don't they just troll dark neighborhoods, seeing if no one's home? Really, I've been burglarized once, had several attempted home breakins, and had car prowl done countless times. All this before CL. I'm not that hard to find. And believe me, no bad guys want to f*&^ with our house if we're home.

I sure do. And I know strangers can be dangerous. I have to say, though, that my house is hardly hidden, my street address is no state secret, and an old sewing machine does not hint of great wealth. I do have a man from Idaho who will pick it up next week. I'm not too worried but you can bet I'll take (wear) all the usual precautions. And the entry way (as you know) is hardwood. It should mop up easily.

I hope they're ready to go away disappointed.
-
Uh oh. . . I did provide an address based on an earlier email that sounded legit. I guess I'm in for it.
-
I emailed him back saying I couldn't accept that form of payment. I said to show up with cash and a truck or forget it.

So I'm selling an antique sewing machine on Craig's list. Although several people expressed an interest in it, only one has said they'll buy it right now. But in his second email, there was something that sounded too familiar. "Thanks for your email and for getting back to me with the requested info for payment making.I will like to confirm to you that the check have been issue and send to you and it was sent out to you via COURIER SERVICE and you would be getting the payment anytime soon and You will receive the payment through UPS or FedEx Courier services with the shipping funds. to cover the shipment of the goods i bought from you. Once you receive the check, have it cashed and deduct your money for the goods also Deduct $100 for your running around that I have caused you during the transaction period and send the remaining funds to the shipper, and the shipper is also picking some other valuable goods (like household, furniture's and electronics set.) at the same city of your location,to my new apartment.that is why you need to help me and transfer the amount to the moving company. This was sent to avoid delay in this transaction and was sent in the interest of protection between us,Hope i can trust you with the shipper fund and you will handle this for me.I will email you the tracking number of the check package and what to do as soon as you get the check.I will send my shipper information to you a soon as i track the status of the check and it indicates that it have been delivered to you (delivered).I do hope to hear from you as soon as you get this message. Do have a pleasant day..talk to you soon!" Think it's a setup?

two out, main and reserve entanglment
JohnMitchell replied to airbornesoon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think you did the right thing. Keep as much nylon over your head as possible. In a downplane it's in front of you and you need to get rid of some of it. Good job PLF'ing. That's a very important and often forgotten survival skill in our sport. It's kept me out of the hospital more than once. -

Even the USPA feels that way. They list both methods in the SIM. -
I guess I'd have to change my screen name to Smith and Wesson.

It's "kneel down, push button, pull out calibration wheel, and read the instructions printed on the side of the unit while the student wonders what's taking so long."

See I knew it...this will catch on with all us cool kids and then before ya know it - everybody will have one! When I bought my first one my DZO was kind of puzzled that I would want one, being a pretty experienced jumper and all. I told her I'd feel really dumb bouncing with $1200 left in my checking account.

Start the reactor, Quade. . .

You'd be surprised how bad off most mega-lottery winners are after just a few years. No I wouldn't, I've seen the kind of people who play the lotto! You're right. Although I buy a ticket from time to time, in our family we call the lottery "a tax on people who are bad at math." Sadly, too many people have few money/life skills. It slips thru their fingers faster than anyone could imagine. In our state I have seen some smart winners, though, that hire an investor (hopefully honest) to give them a sustainable income for the rest of their life.

I see the death toll is revised down to about 24. That's good news but still a lot of tragedy for a lot of families. Krip has a point on the school construction. Were those concrete walls adequately built and reinforced? The will be a lot of investigations to come.

I'm thinking semi-buried earth sheltered homes with a roof you can mow might be the way to go. There was a guy in Utah that built one close to the old DZ. Said it was warm in the winter, cool in the summer. It would be pretty storm resistant too. Of course you can have windows and skylights, but you'd want a good set of shutters.

Really nice job. To improve on it you can push your feet and legs ALL the way down, until your body is a straight line seen from the side. The arms looked super good. The porpoising or potato chipping you had at first was due to too much arch in the body. You can't really arch and track well at the same time. I love the feel of a good track. I'm glad you're getting yours dialed in. Feels great, doesn't it? BTW, I was surprised your instructor had you tracking up the line of flight, towards the next person's airspace. I was glad he had you make a right turn.
