Chris Bickerdike's Skydiving Artwork
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
There was a white Volkswagen Rabbit at Raeford last weekend with a white sticker in the window made from one of Chris' tandem drawings. I want to figure out who's car that is and where they got the sticker from. We had a bunch of former CSS folks there that weekend so it may be one of theirs. Arrive Safely John -

Last night the Rock Hall of Fame and the John Entwistle Foundation held a concert in nearby Cary, NC. There were multiple local bands and some very well known artists that came by themselves or with the latest incarnation of their band. As we arrived Jefferson Starship was finishing their set, so I went a cruised the booths to see what memorabilia was for sale. One booth had some Roger Dean prints on a side table, and my favorite Yes album cover - Relayer - was available as a very nice print. As I waded through the crowd to get to the table to get some help, I noticed that Roger Dean himself was signing autographs, and in the case of the prints he was stamping them for authenticity. I bought a print (best $20 I spent all week) and got in line to get it signed, and I noticed another white haired guy talking to Roger. He turned around and I recognized him as Alan White from Yes! So, this week I will get a nice frame for my Relayer print signed by the artist and one of the artists that commissioned the artist for the art. Arrive Safely John

Send a PM to Betsy Barnhouse (bbarnhouse) or call Skydive AZ at (520) 466-3753 and ask for her. She is a good friend of many of us here and as the DZ manager she can answer every possible question you can throw at her. She is the bomb dignaciousness. Arrive Safely John

When is the most dangerous time in a jumpship?
slotperfect replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In my opinion the most dangerous part of any airplane flight is from takeoff to whatever altitude that aircraft requires to return to the runway for an emergency landing. Hands down. Arrive Safely John -
This is incredibly sad. I found out through this thread late Monday afternoon. I left the house only a few minutes afterward to an appointment about half an hour away. On the way there I listened to "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Echoes." The spoken part in "Gig" haunted me a little . . . I put it in my sig line for a short time to pay my respect as a fan. I really became a Pink Floyd fan in college . . . I wrote the lyrics to "Wish You Were Here" on at least one desk in every classroom I sat in. My roommate had every album from Ummagumma to The Wall so I was able to delve into their music very easily. When the conversation about best rock and roll keyboardists of all time comes up, Rick Wright is always very high on my list. He was an incredibly talented individual. Tuesday afternoon I was home taking some time off. VH1 Classic showed the "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Albums episode which I had not seen. It was outstanding! I would really like to get my hands on that video . . . So I can contribute to his death contributing to the greater musical good, I will pry open my own Floyd collection this week and maybe even add an album or two. Arrive Safely John

Whats the best method for getting back from afar
slotperfect replied to mrbiceps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
These comments are made with the assumption you are talking about a long spot situation where the wind is mostly at your back as you fly back to the DZ . . . I used to use rear risers exclusively. I learned the "Accuracy Trick" from one of John LeBlanc's seminars in 1993 and have been using it since quite successfully. Then I took Scott Miller's canopy piloting course in 2004 . . . from that I learned that which technique is used (rear risers vs. deep brakes) really depends on the canopy and requires experimentation. Like Krisanne mentioned, we did two intentional long spot jumps - I used rear risers on the first and deep brakes on the second and was able to get MUCH more distance from using deep brakes. I have experimented with all of the canopies I fly and that is the case with all of them. Rear risers require a lot of physical effort on bigger canopies, especially tandems, which have so much rear riser pressure it's a serious workout. Deep brakes requires no effort at all because you can hook your thumbs under some point on the harness (under the yoke at the top of the shoulders or under the chest strap) to take the load off your arms. Lots of other good points made here as well. Great thread. Arrive Safely John -

This one is fine - it's no different than a manufacturer announcing a new canopy here in the forums. There is no pricing or information on how to order in the post, just the reason for its creation and a link to find more information. This one is within the forum rules. Arrive Safely John

Another ice cream combination - giving credit to my father for this one. Get a bowl of your favorite vanilla ice cream and add Grape Nuts cereal on top. I thought he had lost his mind until I tried it - good stuff! Arrive Safely John

Cut a very ripe avocado in half and remove the pit. Fill up the hole about one half to two thirds of the way with pure sugar. With a spoon, fold the avocado in from the sides starting just inside the skin and working toward the middle. Keep working on it until you can stir the sugar into the avocado. You end up with an ugly looking light green mush that is very tasty. Arrive Safely John

Get a bowl of your favorite brand of vanilla ice cream . . . let it soften for about 10 minutes. Add Captain Crunch with Crunchberries. Mix it together and enjoy! Arrive Safely John

I love vegetables - I have since I was a kid (even spinach). One of the reasons I was not an anti-vegetable kid was that I was allowed to put maple syrup on them. Growing up in Vermont we always had a supply of pure (natural, not processed) maple syrup on hand. My favorite was broccoli with maple syrup on it. It didn't work on everything, but brussel sprouts were tolerable with a little added maple flavor. Arrive Safely John

Goodbye CSS... Hello new Raleigh DZ
slotperfect replied to OuterFocker1's topic in Events & Places to Jump
First of all, best of luck to the new upstarts. In the meantime, your choices are Raeford (about 2 hours south), Jonesville (about the same - 2 hours west), or Little Washington (about 2:15 east). Arrive Safely John -

Although I have always loved Rush, I am a much bigger Who fan. I am down with the original version (and I love that song). Here is a better version with the original members (although the sound is poor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFZHWGUz-t8&feature=related Arrive Safely John
