  1. Call Alti-2 and ask them about their Altimaster Datalogger: http://www.alti-2.com/Specialty%20Products/DataLogger.htm Arrive Safely John
  2. The OP crossposted the same subject in the Instructors Forum seeing it as a better fit for this subject. I am locking this one so we don't end up with a split conversation. The other thread can be found here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3406425#3406425 Arrive Safely John
  3. That is an excellent analogy! Waiting for your AAD to fire is a very poor choice. Arrive Safely John

  6. There used to be an old retired CSM at the Green Beret Club that patched holes in his Para Foil 282 with 100 mph tape (Army improved version of duct tape). And - for the record - Billy Mays irritates me worse that anything I can think of. Now . . . the Shamwow guy is the MAN! Mighty Mendit might be just the thing for me to glue my new boss's boots to the floor. I already sewed his wallet into the pocket of his jeans. (Friggin civilians). Arrive Safely John

    TI question

Are you using your own rig or a rig supplied by the school? Arrive Safely John
  9. Not aimed at the OP - aimed at those who drug the thread off-topic: Socio-political discussions belong in Speakers Corner, not here. Get it back on topic, please. Arrive Safely John
  10. I think the words "currency" and "proficiency" sometimes get mixed together. There are many situations in which someone's level of currency meets requirements but their level of proficiency really doesn't. In those situations - almost always - there is a higher level of assumed risk. Hypothetical example: Let's say a USPA Tandem Instructor that works near sea level goes to a high elevation DZ (4500 FT above sea level) for the summer to work. When he leaves his sea level DZ he is doing tandems every weekend and is both current (manufacturer and USPA requirements) and proficient. 25 days later he shows up for work at his new DZ - he is still current, but his proficiency has degraded some since he has not jumped in nearly a month. The first tandem student he is assigned is extremely large and there is zero wind. In this situation, the level of risk is much higher than if the TI had been working at the DZ for years and had just made several tandems the day before (a higher level of proficiency). 12. Added Erwin Van Den Braak from Indoor Skydive Roosendaal.
  13. No rentals available there, but call Tony Thacker at Raeford Parachute Center (25 minutes away) at (910) 904-0000. It is highly likely he will rent you a rig. You will not be the ONLY one doing that though, so plan ahead. Arrive Safely John
  14. From the USPA Instructor Rating Manual: Candidates may earn the USPA AFF Instructor rating who have met all the following requirements: a. reached the age of 18 years b. holds or has held any USPA instructional rating* c. earned a USPA C license or the FAI equivalent d. logged six hours of freefall time e. completed the USPA AFF Instructor Proficiency Card (applicable portions) f. successfully proven ability by successfully completing the written and practical AFF evaluation process with a USPA AFF Instructor Rating Course Director *This means if you are not already a USPA Instructor in another training discipline, you will need a Coach Rating before you can attend the AFF Instructor Course. Many Course Directors run them back-to-back at the same location: Coach Course/AFF Pre-Course/AFF Course. The AFF Instructor Proficiency Card: http://www.uspa.org/Portals/0/Downloads/Form_AppendixDProfCards_2008.pdf Arrive Safely John
  15. Greg Windmiller, Scott Campos and I did an AFF re-currency jump for an "original" after a break from skydiving of over 30 years. His name is Bill Jolly, D-26. His grandson, a Marine, was going through the first jump course and Bill wanted to jump with him at age 83. It was great fun. Also, Gene Paul Thacker, D167, owns our dropzone. Arrive Safely John
  16. Mine too, although "Soul Sacrifice" from the first album is my favorite song. Arrive Safely John
  17. Caravanserai . . . I don't own that one because it was Carlos Santana's detour to his jazz fusion period. I should pick it up though . . . it may broaden my horizons a bit! Arrive Safely John
  18. The Black and Gold competition hosted by the Golden Knights will be going on down the road at Laurinburg. Since that means free jumps and free coaching for active duty military folks, things at Raeford will be a little slow. There are a lot of former CSS folks jumping at Raeford now (at least until they get their new DZ plans put in place), so it shouldn't be completely dead. Arrive Safely John
  19. I have been listening to pieces of it from his website just now. I like what I hear - latin rhythms all over again. Arrive Safely John
  20. Tonight I have been jamming to early Santana (first three albums) through headphones. I have always loved those three Santana albums in particular, and until now I thought the latin rhythms were mostly responsible. Tonight I have gained a new appreciation for Gregg Rolie's skills on the B3 . . . the man is a jam fanatic! That has always been one of my favorite instruments. He is still touring with fellow Santana co-founder Michael Carabello and Adrian Arias (son of Chepito from the original Santana band). I topped it all off by watching the Santana performance from the Woodstock DVD -Soul Sacrifice - Michael Shreve is the BOMB! Then I downloaded an album called Abraxas Pool, which features several early Santana members to listen to tomorrow. I loves me some old Santana! Arrive Safely John
  21. That's what I was thinking - the magazine is a collateral benefit of the membership, which most DZs (in the States anyway) require to be able to jump there. And yes you can opt out, but not with any monetary savings. Arrive Safely John
  22. Let's keep this thread going: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3360755#3360755 Arrive Safely John
  23. Please keep your Subject line to a reasonable size . . . put the details in the post not the thread title. Thanks! Arrive Safely John
  24. ***Having had related discussions with both UPT and Strong I would say those statements are exactly accurate. Arrive Safely John
  25. If this is their reaction, would you really want to work for/with someone that is that judgmental about things they don't really understand? If it doesn't come out in the interview it will surely come out later on, and the snap judgment will just be delayed until then. My $.02 Arrive Safely John
