Army rigger trying to get civilian ticket
slotperfect replied to AirborneDaddy's topic in Gear and Rigging
Start here: MOS 92R PM me any specific questions you have, or start another thread so we don't "hijack" this one, OK? John 92R Since 1984 -
Use the valsalva maneuver. Hold your nose, close your mouth, and blow shortly and sharply. Caveat: this maneuver works well once in level flight at altitude or during/after descent. Don't use it on ascent . . . use the yawn or jaw-jut method. If you can't clear them or experience pain, call it a day and get a doc to look in your ears. Arrive Safely John

Closing in on SKYDIVE #1000...what kind of skydive should I do?
slotperfect replied to maxmadmax's topic in The Bonfire
That's what I did for my 3000th. BB hooked me up with Amy & Omar at Eloy and they organized a hybrid for me. I had never done one before (and yes, I bought beer!) It didn't quite go as planned, but I will definitely do many more! They are cool! Arrive Safely John -
Joe Morgan Memorial Simultaneous Skydive
slotperfect replied to GreenLight's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I think this might get lost in General Skydiving Discussions, so I'm moving it to Events and Gatherings. It's an important tribute and an awesome idea, and I'd hate to see it get pushed off the front page in GSD. Arrive Safely John -
Do you still call the DZ where you learned home?
slotperfect replied to Andrewwhyte's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was trained initially as a Military Free Fall jumper, so the poll doesn't really work for me. But, regarding my "civilian" skydiving career: -It is the closes one to where I live. (35 minutes) -I have jumped at the neighbors, and I have friends at both places -I have been homesteading at Ft. Bragg for almost 20 years - no moves for me! -I have reinvented my "groove" at Raeford a couple of times. -
Eddy "Mango" Lopez From my early AFF jumps, through molding me into a Golden Knight Demonstrator, he taught me so much that has stayed with me to this day. He is like a brother to me now, and many of the lessons he taught me outside skydiving I will never be able to repay. Arrive Safely John

Kolla Dearest, You are awesome. What a great contribution you are to this sport. It's worth the trip . . . I have seen it myself. It made a believer out of me! Arrive Safely John

This includes the return shipping!

I normally pack my own main. Like others have said, if I am working and I will miss a lift because I am packing, I would rather pay a packer $5 than lose $25 because I missed the lift. I pay $5 at Raeford, and take care of the packers in other ways as well. I pay $7 at Eloy because I jump a 190. I will tip the packers sometimes as well. Arrive Safely John

I have the EXACT letter you need in MS Word format at work. I'll PM it to you tomorrow. Get your Rigger Warrant to sign it. If you don't have a Warrant Officer in your shop, the senior NCO will do. You'll need your ID card when you go fill out your paperwork. Call the FSDO to make sure you take everything you need. Arrive Safely John -
Now there's a comforting thought! I'll have to make a point not to use one! Arrive Safely John

I do it on almost every AFF jump I do to see my student's fully open main canopy flying back toward the drop zone/wind line. I also used it a lot leading stacks when I was a GK. Arrive Safely John

Great post, Dan. It contributes a lot to this thread, which has become rather emotional in spots. I remember riding in the Otter at Raeford on a load cancelled due to winds. A cell of heavy Summer storms was moving in out of nowhere with 40 MPH winds. Dan got the plane out of the sky fast and furiously and got it in the hangar before the rain came. It also got all of us undercover safely as well. At the time I remember thinking how glad I was that Dan was the man in that situation. [bows deeply] Thanks [/bows deeply] Arrive Safely John

That looks like a WOOHOO to me! I think he got caught by the camera in mid-sentence! Arrive Safely John

Take some time to prepare . . . -review your emergency procedures and practice them -dirt dive your exit in the mockup Then . . . -grab a Coach or Instructor to give you a simple working dive to give you a training plan to focus on instead of your non-currency -jump a familiar canopy and shoot a conservative approach -remember that a PLF may be the ticket to making the next load! Let us know how it goes! Arrive Safely John

To get the info you're going to ask them for, they're gonna pull the order/production sheet for that serial number. Get them to fax it to you. Lot of good information to have on the rig, and it will help with resale as well. Arrive Safely John

You can update the list to include me as "Gonna Be There" I'll be there Friday only, but there I'll be! Arrive Safely John
