  6. My personal preference . . . I do 270 backloops from ramp aircraft that I can exit comfortably that way. I find the Skyvan to be the easiest. I always get the student's permission first. I have never attempted a backloop from a side-door aircraft. It may be worth a go with another Tandem Instructor on the front to see if I can execute it cleanly. I choose not to do front loops because I find them hard to recover cleanly. They also seem to carry more speed than a backloop, which would aggravate a side-spin if it were to happen. I will never put my back to the door for an extended period of time. That's just asking for it, IMHO. I watched a bunch of tandem videos today where the Tandem Instructors did flips of one sort or another. The video took a while to catch them - another disadvantage IMHO. Arrive Safely John

  8. I don't know of any "calculation," but from my experience most female skydivers are extremely flexible. When I was a GK, one of my female teammates (about 5'6" and 130lbs) was one of the fastest fallers on the team - wearing double-zipper polycotton "off-the-shelf" jumpsuits. Arrive Safely John

  11. Most of the military folks who are skydivers are runners by default - part of the profession. Skydiving teams run a lot . . . I see them running together early in the morning before showering up and heading out to train. I have been in the Army for 20 years, and have always run because I had to. About three years ago I shifted that, and ran because I wanted to. in 2002/2003 I ran 5 races including my first marathon. I was training for my second marathon in February and got sidelined with achilles' tendonitis. After a couple of months of meds, physical therapy, and rest I am easing back into running again Monday. This injury has not kept me from jumping though. I have been injured to the point of being grounded twice in skydiving . . . twice in running too. Not bad for 20 years IMHO. Arrive Safely John
  12. If the machine is used, take out the throat plate and smooth out the needle hole with some emory floss. You can buy it from an industrial sewing machine supply house. Many times if the hole in the throat plate is nicked from the needle striking it, it will catch the thread and break it. If the throat plate is too far gone, order yourself a new one - it's worth the wait and the expense. Arrive Safely John

I would also have a large gear bag full of different size frap hats, jump suits, and gloves, along with a couple of altimeters and plenty of goggles. "Slider rebound" This happens because the slider is not all the way up against the slider stops when the folded canopy is put in the bag, when deployment begins, the slider (inflating with air like it's supposed to), first travels up toward the canopy. It then rebounds off the slider stops, causing the slider to come down too soon and too fast, before the jumper's body has had a chance to decelerate. Thus the spanking. I have had one hard opening with mine in 115 jumps - I'm quite certain it was slider rebound. Arrive Safely John

  24. Call Para-Flite and talk to Giorgio Piatti. I vaguely remember someone years ago being told by Para-Flite to remove the center baffle on the nose, which fixed the long snivel issue. He was having the exact same problem you are. Please talk to Giorgio before you do it though, I am not confident enough in my recollection to tell you to go for it.
