There's a thread in "Incidents" on this now. Let's focus on contributing to that one once the facts are established. Also, this is a duplicate post from "The Bonfire." Duplicate posts are a no-no because they waste space on HH's server. I asked the Mod there to delete that thread . . . please don't double post any more. Thanks. Incidents Thread Edited to add link. Jumping with Mannequin, Good Idea or Anit social?

Remember "Mr. Carrot" from the Wally Gubbins videos? Arrive Safely John -
Hi Budd, Sorry to hear of your loft's demise. I hope your situation changes for the better and you are able to continue rigging. The Forum Rules prohibit advertising in the forums. Your post contained one sentence that easily qualified it as such. Since the majority of your post was about saying thank you and goodbye, as well as leaving your contact information, I chose to simply edit out the sentence containing the solicitation and left the rest as is. Duplicate posts in multiple forums is also not allowed, therefore I deleted the duplicate in the General Skydiving Discussions Forum. Best wishes for the future, Arrive Safely John

In Memory Of Joel K. Brattain
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
PFC Joel K Brattain was killed in action in Iraq on 13 March 2004. Friday, Joel's parents Gary & Elaine came to Raeford to make a tandem jump to see what taking to the skies was all about. They were visiting Fort Bragg for the third time, this time as the guest of 1/504 PIR, who gave them a personal guided tour of Fort Bragg and the surrounding area so they could better understand the life their son led as a Paratrooper. When discussing parachute jumping with Joel's Platoon Leader, the Lieutenant (a student at Raeford) suggested adding a tandem jump to their itinerary. I took Joel's Dad Gary up for his tandem jump. He told me Joel's motto was "Go big, or go home." Gary and Elaine came out to do just that. It was an honor and a pleasure for me to share the world of parachuting with them; it was a perfect example of why I love to do tandems. Some of the benefits are worth much more to me than the money. Live in peace Joel, and know that you are not forgotten . . . -------------------------------------------------------------------- Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Isaiah 6:8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Arrive Safely John -
I believe that tips should never be expected or made mandatory. I do get tips, fairly often actually, and I appreciate them when they are given. I think they are given based on the quality of the student's experience, and the resources they have available. How much? I usually get between $10 and $20, which works out to 4% to 9%. The biggest cash tip I ever got was $40. Arrive Safely John

Choose The Correct Forum For Your Post!
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I didn't create anything. Sangiro is the creator of this site, I just help him keep it true to it's intended function. Maybe you should PM him questions so you can better understand his vision for this site and these forums. It's very simple. With your post topic in mind, read the forum descriptions and choose the best fit for your post. Once you become familiar with the forums as a whole, it will become second nature to know where a post belongs. Where this comment comes from is a mystery to me. The only part of the entire site that is not related to skydiving are two forums, one of which contains a lot of skydiving posts anyway. Look around. Arrive Safely John -
Choose The Correct Forum For Your Post!
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is not a "catch-all" forum. I just moved eight threads from here to forums where they were a better fit. Five of them were about events or places to jump (guess where they went?), one was about a helmet (gear), one about free fall photography, and one requesting a telephonic wake-up call, which has nothing at all to do with skydiving. This forum is for skydiving related posts that do not have a specific forum dedicated to that particular subect. When you don't take the time to choose the proper forum for your post, and aimlessly put it here, it 1) clutters up this forum, 2) does not get as much quality attention as it would in the specific forum where it fits, and 3) makes unnecessary work for the Moderators. Please have respect for this environment and choose the home for your post carefully. Thanks. Arrive Safely John -
Low number jumper intro, and questions (long)
slotperfect replied to mnealtx's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have done it before . . . the husband making his first AFF jump, the wife making her first tandem. The AFF got out first, followed by our tandem. If you only pay for one video, it should go with her. He can film both exits, her freefall, and both landings. Great plan. If you get to Ft. Bragg/Pope AFB, I can help you have it happen at nearby Raeford. Arrive Safely John -

Can anybody recommend some books on canopy design
slotperfect replied to BlindBrick's topic in Gear and Rigging
Chiming in on sd30960's input, aimed at BlindBrick: I am an experienced Rigger and I can sew very well. I would never take on building my own canopy. I am not a design engineer, nor do I feel I have the skills or experience from being apprenticed to a canopy manufacturer to do so. There is a perfect canopy, both in size and performance, out there somewhere for you. You may just have to be a bit more diligent in your search. Seek advice from the Instructors and Staff at your DZ that have seen you fly your current canopy. They can help you start looking in a safe size and performance range. Arrive Safely John -
A manual containing packing instructions does in fact come with a new canopy. PISA, the original manufacturer of the Hornet, was bought out by Aerodyne. PM atsaubrey here in the forums or call Aerodyne and I'll bet they can get you what you are looking for! Arrive Safely John

Can anybody recommend some books on canopy design
slotperfect replied to BlindBrick's topic in Gear and Rigging
Another suggestion would be to send a shotgun email to different canopy manufacturers, providing your exit weight, experience level, DZ altitude, and desire to fly a high performance canopy. You are not the Lone Ranger in your situation, so they might just have a recommendation for you. There is a convenient list of some of those manufacturers (the ones that are registered dotcommers) stuck to the top of this forum. Good luck! Arrive Safely John -
I jump a Hornet 210 owned by the RPC School as a backup rig when we are swamped with AFF. I PRO pack it, folding 4 and 4 to the center, quartering the slider. I get great openings that way. Others have told me they have the occasional hard opening, but I have not using that pack job. BTW - I pack my Sabre2 the same way, although I do notice that it opens slower and softer than the Hornet. Edit: for clearer verbage. Arrive Safely John

Amen to that. I fly the exit, regardless of the student's body position. Unless the student creates an orientation for us as a pair that makes it unsafe for me to throw the drogue, I won't make any corrections to the student until the drogue is out and I have completed my handle check. 95% of them have gotten squared away by then anyway, remembering what I trained them to do on the ground. Most of the videos I have seen of poor drogue throws have been caused by a TM that is in a hurry to get the drogue out. Arrive Safely John

CLICKY! (Although I don't seem to get the same error?!?!?)

The only thing about this solution is that the Instructor in question could just go to another DZ and join the Staff there. Some will ask for references, but others who may really be hurting for AFF Instructors night snap them right up. I agree with Buzz that a random sampling each year would be more effective than a blanket annual check dive. Arrive Safely John

Have Haley's chute; Looking for Norton's.
slotperfect replied to Rondo's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Rondo! I'm glad you found us, and I hope that you will enjoy your time here in the Forums. With regard to your post, I refer you to the Forum Rules, which specifically ask us not to advertise in the Forums. Sangiro, the creator of dropzone.com, established a most excellent Classifieds section for that. From my experience with the dz.com classifieds, your ad will get lots of exposure. To maintain the nostalgic value of your post, both in support of your "quest" and for the edification of other dotcommers, I edited out the solicitation and left the rest intact. I also moved the post to the "Skydiving History & Trivia" Forum, where it is not only a much better fit, but it will stay on the front page longer and get your "quest" more exposure. Thanks, and good luck! Arrive Safely John -
What kind of rig is it? Was it custom fit for you or did you buy it used? Arrive Safely John

Twin Otter: I have my students get their toes over the edge of the door, feet together, facing straight out, squatting down. I have them look at the camera fler with their head back on my shoulder and smile. I do a "side slide" exit, exiting into the relative wind. I don't hurry setting the drogue - I fly the exit first.
