  1. Since "all the major medial [sic] outlets" have covered her she is, therefore, NOT an idiot? Perhaps a return to remedial syllogistic reasoning is in order, professor. Last I checked, just about any clanging gong could garner major media attention. That having been said, I do agree that it is the epitome of heartlessness to visciously attack this woman's character. Fine, argue against her politics. I certainly disagree w/ them, too. But she lost her SON for crissakes! Being a parent myself, I'd be positively insane if I lost one of mine as well, especially if it was in a conflict that I thought was started nefariously. The woman needs sympathy not hatred. And in my opinion, sympathy would include NOT giving her any more media attention. That is only fueling her problems. -the artist formerly known as sinker

  3. Retards -and murderers- is right. It's embarassing that they are from TN, since that is where I reside. As for the muslim cabbie story, I'm glad it was posted. I think it IS worthwhile to put forth stories like that so that hopefully some bigotry will erode about both muslims AND jews. Here in Nashville, we have a VERY large population of muslim immigrants (sp?) and my experience w/ them has generally been outstanding. However, I still struggle w/ stereotyping them sometimes, and being judgemental about them. It's something I constantly have to keep in check. I travel extensively for work and frequently use cabs to go to and from the airport. On one occasion, after finally arriving home late at night on my birthday, an old muslim man who noticed how tired and down I was to have been travelling on my birthday, waived the fare as a birthday present. He didn't give me a card, he didn't ask me to call him if I needed another cab, he just wished me happy birthday and refused my money. On another occasion, I landed home in Nashville the night that the Gulf War(W's version) started. The cabbie was playing the live radio feeds from Kuwait and Iraq and was simply ecstatic. When I asked why, he said he was Kurdish and fled Iraq w/ his family before Saddam's henchmen killed them, which evidentally was imminent. He was thankful that our government was "finally doing something" about Saddam and he too refused my money. He said that he was refusing all fares that day as his way of thanking the American people for helping to oust Saddam, who was responsible for the deaths of so many Kurds. Whatever one thinks of the war in Iraq (I've always been mixed about it), or muslims in general, this second cabbie I wrote about, as well as the first one, illustrate what others here have already said... people are people, there are some bad ones but there are lots of GOOD ones too. Now I have that damned Depeche Mode song in my head. -the artist formerly known as sinker

  18. anyone ever been to that bridge in Austin TX that leads downtown? there are thousands and thousands and thousands of bats that live under that bridge over the river and at dusk they all take off from under the bridge and fly off into the darkening sky. It's so trippy. It looks seriously like a plague... just clouds and clouds of bats flying off. People come from all over to stand on the bridge and watch the bats fly off from under them. -the artist formerly known as sinker
  19. my thing is, i'm not afraid of heights in airplanes -- or in freefall or under canopy-- but on buildings and cliffs, I feel it deep in my gut. butterflies, wooziness, etc. but yet I'm compelled to LOOK! I can't help it, and I can barely drag myself away from looking down, even though it scares me deeply. pretty psycho, huh. -the artist formerly known as sinker
  20. i'm not sure of all the symptoms of a brown recluse bite, but they're quite poisonous. what you described could easily be a b.r. bite. we have a lot of them in Nashville... my neighbor actually swallowed one whole that had crawled into his Pepsi can... he got violently ill and had to be hospitalized. they found the spider in his emesis. gross. if you saw the spider, they're quite easy to recognize. they have a tell-tale violin or guitar shape on their backs, starting from their head and going backwards. (not to their butts). and they don't get too big from what I have seen. you've probably read this but,,,,, here's what i found... Human reactions to a brown recluse bite vary considerably and depend on the amount of venom injected by the spider and the victim's sensitivity to the venom. A painful reaction can occur almost immediately, but often the victim won't realize they have been bitten for an hour or more. Victims usually describe a stinging sensation followed by intense pain. A small white blister usually develops at the site of the bite. The affected area swells and becomes hard to the touch. This tissue dies and eventually sloughs away, leaving a sunken, ulcerated sore of various sizes. The typical reaction has been described by physicians as unremarkable or mild and covers an area less than the size of a dime. In a small percentage of cases (less than 5 percent) the sore covers a larger area. Medical attention should be obtained as soon as possible after a bite occurs. Prompt medical attention can prevent severe reactions and lessen the long-term effects. Healing takes place slowly, requiring six to eight weeks. Fatalities are rare. -the artist formerly known as sinker
