There is more to the story......some ground launching is attempting to be (or has recently been) done in National Parks. Hmmm....parachuting in National Parks. Does that sound familiar? (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Man, I missed that one at BD. That's the 3rd canopy/body strike that I've seen since 1995, either live or on video. I believe Lee Werling's was the worst when he hit near the center of someone's canopy and was completely wrapped in nylon for a second or so. Amazing. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. I typically give no mercy for those who burn objects, but you guys are just kicking a dead horse. It appears that you've all vented (some of you more foolishly than others - 813), so let things cool down and hopefully everyone will learn. Hopefully the 105 posts in this thread got the point across. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Yep, it's available at: Vertical Visions The Holiday Inn pic turned out GREAT. The one taken from the boom truck basket is pretty cool as well, but not perfect. I have about 8 of each in stock. I'll post scans of each photo very soon. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

If you missed it today, it will air again on December 9 from 12-1pm EST. Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

A condensed one-hour version of the Bridge Day live TV broadcast will air on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) on November 12 (Friday) from 12:30-1:30pm EST and on December 9 from 12-1pm EST in front of 60 million households. Set your TiVo's and DVR's. Cya. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Quade, ya gotta brush up on your parachute history bro. Some of the first parachutes were used to save people from burning castles, hundreds of years ago. See, it's even on the wall at the Smithsonian Institute and in the history page for a notable BASE gear manufacturer. Parachuting from fixed objects was how our wonderful sport got started. But anyway, let's not get off topic here......give me more apple/orange comparisons please! (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Try as hard you can (and I'm sure some of you will), but you'll never convince me that sticking my pecker in another man's ass is anything but absurdly abnormal. I applaud those with morals who support the traditional, normal meaning of marriage. PS. I've been "heterosexually married" for 6+ years to a wonderful wife......try it sometime! I have several videos of "normal" PC's doing exactly what you saw in that video (hesitate for 1-2 secs). Just ask Tim C. from Spiders from Mars about his Tombstone 2 sec PC hesitation in the late 90's. *Any* PC can do this, as PC's work the majority of the time. Don't think that this couldn't happen to your brand new $100 PC. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

The rules for gear are pretty much the same as they've been for 17 years, and they probably won't change anytime soon (read the FAQ for more info). (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

The show "Across America" is featuring BASE jumping this Sunday, November 7th. They came to Bridge Day 2004, so you'll probably see some of that stuff. The air time will be at 10:30PM local time, nationwide on your local FSN station. Unfortunately, those who have FSN Pittsburgh will not be able to catch it, because it will not be airing in Pittsburgh that day. So, can someone please record it and send me a copy? I'll trade ya a Bridge Day 2004 Live TV DVD. Cya (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Sounds like the Kerry supporters cared more about $$$ than morals.....and it cost them the election. We all knew where Bush stood on God, guns, and gays. And most of America agrees with him. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I agree with treejumps and pajarito. The people voted and the majority doesn't support gay marriage. Gay people have no more right to marry each other than I have a right to marry my dog, or my sister, or the oak tree in my front yard. Marriage was defined many years ago (one man, one woman)....stop trying to alter the system. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I'm a saved Christian since age 15. And yes, we live in times where Christians are persecuted quite a bit. Christians aren't perfect, but at least they know where they're going when they've made their last jump. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Slim, for coming back after a serious injury and enjoying life to the end. What is your most memorable BASE jumping moment? Eiger, July 2002. Four of us thought we'd made our last leap. Dennis, The reason I didn't post YOUR response is because that's bad etiquitte. Why don't YOU post your response? Dennis, you were the one who brought a private conversation into the public in a very angry way. Ever heard of the phrase that organizing BASE jumpers is like herding cats? There are plenty of stressfull issues I have to deal with each year, everything from the guy who cussed out the Holiday Inn staff over ID checks for free beer, to the possible theft of a canopy in the LZ. Then after BD, I have to deal with conflicts between the Bridge Day Commission (BDC) and several jumpers who caused problems with the cops and even one who got the head of the BDC so mad that she called the cops on him. How about the jumper who decided to make his last jump with a 1 liter bottle of beer, only to have it come loose on opening and land 6' from my water rescue staff? I am still sorting some of that stuff out now.....2 weeks after Bday. It's not easy and it can be stressful. I think many people would never have known that Jennifer and I are Christians, because we don't force it on anyone. Because we're Christians, it doesn't make us perfect or even better than you. Please don't point your finger at us if I get angry every now and then. I make mistakes just like the rest of you. Cya. PS. My wife didn't tell me about her above post until after she hit the send button. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

Dennis, you know darn well that my email wasn't a threat. You only perceived it as such because you don't like that I'm a Christian. And you now call me a fundamentalist Christian? If you want to lie about me because you don't like Christians, then so be it. Here's what I originally wrote Dennis: Then Dennis misinterpreted the email and blasted me, so I wrote this back: I won't post what Dennis wrote back to me out of respect. However, Dennis, you only know me by the one email I wrote you a few days ago. I've been around for awhile, and my friends know who I am. Sure, I can get pretty mad when someone takes a jab at me. Perhaps my emails sound more threatening to others than they were meant to. But I'm also the guy who'll bend over backwards to retain your friendship, even if you bash me in public like you just did. Mike, I meant every word in my letter to Mr. Jeff Pyne (Pepe Rodriguez), who obviously is resorting to lies because I pulled his badge. He will not jump at BD as long as I'm running the show. He is a risk. However, read the email I sent him again because there are no threats of arrest! You Rodriguez boys are pretty tight. I got tons of email from his brothers asking me to let him jump next year. And since I stood my ground, you guys wanna bash me? Go for it, I can take the heat. I may be a Christian, but I'm not perfect. I can hang with the best of you. And lastly, I didn't ask for TV coverage this year. It came on it's own. I helped them because I love my sport and I want to see it flourish. Did you guys ever think that since I live so close to the NRGB, that I might want to help show our sport in a better light, so that we may be able to jump it more than 6 hours a year? Hmm......just read the $170 banner I purchased and hung at the end of the $4500 ramp I built for you. As Avery said, you can't please them all! Peace and love to you all. Cya. Allow me to elaborate on the cussing rule. We are only concerned with people cussing LOUDLY at the exit area. You can say whatever you want in normal conversation, but when you scream it and the thousands of spectators hear you, that's where we draw the line. It's all about having judgment. Would you want your kids to hear the F word at a public event? Probably not. Have some morals, people. I hate censorship as well. Trust me, I can't stand it. I get upset anytime I hear about some new law that goes into effect. The NPS has about 19 rules according to their Bridge Day permit. If anyone of us breaks a single rule, they have the right to shut us down and everyone would suffer. I have only a few rules: Don't cuss loudly, don't cut in line, don't jump my fence, and don't jump your Icarus 47. It's pretty simple. My rules are not that tough to follow. If you can't follow them, then you are a risk to the event. I don't want to have to read some editorial in the local paper complaining about use of the F word by the jumpers. My butt is on the line as the organizer. The local broadcast did NOT have any type of delay. Having a jumper go in hasn't happened for 17 years, so the risk of showing a bounce was a risk we all took. I can't prevent a bounce on live TV, but I can prevent a $150,000 fine for the network if you say the F word on live TV. You all know as well as I that we are better off NOT yelling out cuss words at the exit area. It's kind of hard for me to believe that some of you are arguing with me about that. If you rip off your velcro pants at the exit area, then you won't have to worry about me saying anything (the cops might wanna talk to you when you land, though). And yes, I'll be organizing BD for at least the next 2 years....per my contract. Cya. EDIT: spelling error and Icarus 47 rule (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I don't want to get into a pissing match, so I'll just say this. I am supported by Bill Bird (co-organizer) and the Bridge Day Commission on this. Prompting the crowd is just the same. If you don't like my rules, there will always be someone else waiting anxiously to take your Bridge Day slot. If you come to Bridge Day 2005 and cuss (or prompt other lemmings to do so), you will also be banned. End of story. I stand by by decision. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. It's pretty simple. As I told everyone at the Friday night mandatory meeting (to which this jumper failed to attend), there will be no cussing at the exit area or LZ as we were on LIVE TV. At the busiest time of day in front of thousands of young children and adults on the bridge, the jumper prompted the other lemming jumpers to say the Rodriguez chant....very loud, I might add. Many were offended. Fortunately, live TV didn't carry it. We cut his badge. To add insult to injury, this jumper then somehow found his way on top of the bridge to do a live TV interview. This time, on live TV, the jumper again tried to make a fellow jumper say the Rodriguez chant. Fortunately, the other jumper did not respond. If you want to cuss, feel free to do it anywhere other than out on the bridge. We were on LIVE TV and in front of a large crowd. That is no place to be yelling the F word. With all the hard work many of us are doing with legal BASE around the world, we don't need people yelling or prompting others to yell the F word. Hope that answers all your questions, 570. Over the last 3 years I've been involved...yes, everyone had the opportunity to jump multiple times. Some made 1, some made up to 6 in the past. A few decided not to jump. Since I've been coming to BD (1992), there might have only been one year where the weather didn't allow everyone to jump. Regardless of growth, we cap it at 450 each year. Growth shouldn't affect the jump number requirement. You mean an S, right? BD *is* a place to make a first BASE jump, but it's also a place where you'll find the most experienced jumpers in the world each year. The mix of the two is unique, but very special. BD is a real BASE jump with real consequences. I think you'll find that the majority of new blood makes their first BASE jump at Bridge Day, the Perrine, or Norway as of late. BD is what it is and if you dig too deep into its purpose in BASE, you're probably wasting bandwidth. Shouldn't ALL first BASE jumps be low risk? Absolutely. Our first jump courses at BD are nowhere near what is offered at the Idaho bridge. I urge my two first jump instructors, who coincidentally teach FJC's in Idaho, to suggest a more in depth course after BD. After BASE jumping for over 11 years, I STILL learn a lot at BD every year. When you stop learning, you're in real trouble. BD is hard to explain to anyone who hasn't been there....but we do put off about 90 first timers each year (out of 400+ who show up). BD is just as much for the first timers as it is for the experienced jumpers. BD is also just as much (and maybe even more) about the knowledge, friends, and partying as it is about jumping. Putting off newbies is not a goal of BD, but simply a product of the event. It would make life much smoother for me with only experienced jumpers, but it's also priceless to see the look on a first jumper's face after landing! And that means a lot to me! It's the big reason I chose to organize. Working on it. Will post the data when done. I'm still enjoying that fact that my phone is down from 10 calls a night to about 2.....and that we don't start planning for next year until (GULP) November 10th. The fun never stops. Not without bugging them too much. I doubt anyone would disagree with you on that. We do have packing classes and all jumpers are encourgaged to pack themselves. Packers? Not this year. Thanks for the input. (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

This is definately an interesting and educational thread and I'm glad we all have the opportunity to add to the discussion. I just got the chance to read everyone's posts and I can understand all sides of the issue. I'm sure Avery and Andy have been snickering along with me if they've read this thread. I won't get into much detail, but here is some info that may enlighten us all..... 1) The 50 jump rule came into effect for BD2003. Before that, there was NO minimum. I discussed implementing a minimum with many jumpers and with Bill Bird (BD co-organizer and someone who's been to every BD since 1982). We agreed that 50 was a good number for a variety of reasons. However, we are open to changing it in the future. Just for kicks, did you know the average number of skydives for a BD2004 jumper was 1199 (the highest number over the last 3 years)? If I were to go through the list, you'll not find many jumpers in the 50-100 jump range. I'll try to analyze the jump numbers and post that information for everyone to digest. Further statistical data on BD is available HERE 2) BD is an easy first BASE jump. As Skypuppy mentioned, the last fatality was 1987 (not to say that it couldn't happen every year). We do everything humanly possible to make it safe each year. 3) BD has been around for 25 years. It is what it is and it's probably not going to change. I'm already counting the days until next year. As I mentioned before, this thread is quite valuable. Anyone who identifies problems should also provide solutions. Do you think the 50 jump rule is not enough? If so, then what would be a good number? (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

For those of you who made it to Bridge Day 2004, thank you very much for attending! Despite some wet weather throughout the day, 390 jumpers showed up making 645 jumps. The winds were cooperative until about 1:30pm when a brief storm passed by and we stopped jumping for only 25 minutes. Nonetheless, I will always remember Bridge Day 2004. In the future, we'll be asking each other "where you were during the storm of 2004?". It was my favorite Bridge Day from both a jumping and organizing point of view. I'm glad you could be a part of Bridge Day 2004. ************************************************************* THE BASE VIDEOFEST on Thursday night had over 15 entries shown on two large screen TV's! ************************************************************* Congratulations to the winners of the Bridge Day 2004 Videofest: 1st Place - Continuum II by Triax Productions, which also premiered on Saturday evening. You can reach her at susan_crandell@earthlink.net or 845-534-7601, in Upstate New York. ************************************************************* RED BULL - THANK YOU! ************************************************************* A special thanks to Red Bull, who sponsored Bridge Day BASE jumping again this year. There was plenty of Red Bull at the Holiday Inn, exit area, and landing area to quench the thirst of all the jumpers. The two rope swing jumps performed by the Red Bull Air Force were amazing, to say the least. Without Red Bull's assistance over the last two years, we wouldn't have the diving board or the new $4500, 8' tall exit platform that made its debut this year. Thanks again to Red Bull (www.redbullusa.com) If you have any comments about Bridge Day 2004 or suggestions on how to improve Bridge Day 2005, please let us know! We're currently working hard on extending Bridge Day so that we have more than 6 hours to jump next year! Many, many thanks to all of you for sharing the Bridge Day experience with me! Keep in touch. July 1st will be the start of registration for Bridge Day 2005. Cya next year! (c)2010 Vertical Visions. No unauthorized duplication permitted.

I would prefer it by mail. PM sent. If anyone else wants a copy of the live TV broadcast that aired from 12-3pm on Bridge Day, I'm providing DVD-R's at cost. Just send me $5 ($9 outside the US) to cover the cost of shipping and the DVD to: Vertical Visions BD04 DVD Offer PO Box 934 Bridgeport, WV 26330 Make sure you can view DVD-R's, as I wouldn't want to get all wrapped up in refunds or replacements for a $5 DVD.
