I'll take it a step farther and say the kids should get some kind of punishment and some counseling so the understand that what was done was wrong.

It would be fair if they could never profit from it and if they had to pay for the cost of the "rescue". Even if it were not the entire amount, a sum large enough to make them say, "I'll never even think of doing that shit again. 50 to 100 k sounds about right to me.
