I think that combination in your context means using both time and the 45° rule together. Using time is a good idea, combining (i.e.using together) the 45° rule with time is a bad idea. edit for spilling Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Flaws????? It is totally useless! Edited to add: Have you not read the thread in this forum titled the 45 degree rule? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I would suggest you replace the 45 degree rule with... Time and counting how many windows the aircraft has, used in combination.... On an upwind jump run, count the doors as well. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I find temperature has a lot to do with seperation. In winter jumpers tend to stay as far away from the door as possible to keep warm. This means when it's their turn to exit they have to first walk the whole lenght of the plane (taking a few extra seconds) before they jump. In summer they are all just desperate to get out of the hot aircraft. Exit seperation is reduced. I never did believe that the critcal temperature was 45° though. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Here is a mine of useful information. http://www.iit.edu/~kallend/skydive/#resources Download the powerpoint presentaion with the freefall sim. I know it's a lot to read, but if you read it and make a true attempt to understand it, then you can answer your questions yourself. BTW, I consider doing 180° with the aircraft on the jump run to be dangerous. Before you drop the second group, the first group should have landed. The 1st group does not have enough time with a 180° turn. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Can you leave a reserve packed up for years at a time?
speedy replied to KidWicked's topic in Gear and Rigging
The reserve repack cycle here in Germany is one year. I would trust my reserve after it had been packed for many years but, until the repack cycle is changed, I will get it repacked every year. I would leave it packed and store it in a cool dry place. Before the rig is used again, get everything checked and the reserve repacked by a rigger. I am not a rigger so that advice can be taken with a mountain of salt. I would be interested to hear reasons why you should do otherwise. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

I am sure that the instructor on your DZ is giving you the correct advice. Follow it

Backslide is what I mean, long arms, short legs. The only sure way is to wait for them to land before the tandem jumps. This is not practical. This is the last thing I expect a TM to do. The TM's job is to land the passenger safely and on the DZ if possible. If I don't make it back to the DZ, that's my problem. Anyway, if I don't make it back, the TM is not going to make it back either. The TM may have a 1000 ft more altitude, but flying a Tandem in deep brakes is far more exhausting than flying a velocity in deep brakes I can land in any direction, tandems need to turn into the wind for their landings. Can you buy me one? Just pop it in the post to me in Germany. Write on the package "gift value $5". That should get through customs Ohh and send the ammo in a separate package. It's kinda hard to get hold of over here. I could really have some fun at home defense with that sucker Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Hope you have a crosswind drop run as tracking down the drop run can cause problems. Pulling my Velo in track may have been the cause of my last two reserves. However if I did all of that stuff I would land consistently off. The guest then gets no video of the landing So what I do is.... as soon as the TM waves off I go into a backtrack. This generates about 60ft of horizontal seperation. I also film the opening from this back track, eventually more or less falling in a kneeling position. Then I dump my canopy. The openings are admitedly filmed from a distance, but at least I get the canopy snivel and the guest in the frame. I have only done one vid where the TM had a reserve and he never went below me. A problem with tracking to far is that Tandems (at least at my DZ) go out after the solo students. We have inexperienced students sliding all over the place and pulling at 4000 to 5000 ft. I, as the vidiot, am pulling generally at the height where the students already have opened canopys. I have had some close calls. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I would log it, if you want to. It will help you review how slowly you were falling. Let's face it, with over 4000 skydives, who gives a rats arse whether you have 40 hrs, 50 hrs or 60 hrs freefall time. When I got my Pro-Track I started logging the time stated on the Pro-Track. I soon gave up though because the numbers were not easy to add For me a 14,000 ft skydive is almost always 60 sec freefall. I lose some time on relative jumps but probaly gain some on tandem videos. I jumped the R.A.G.E 86 this morning. I exited at 1300 meters and pulled after a 3 sec delay. After a few seconds of snivel the canopy started to dive to the right. Nothing violent, a bit like my Vengeance 120 tends to on occasion. I grabbed the risers and straightened it up. Then I wondered how the hell I was supposed to get at the slider. It was stuck about two feet above the risers. I tugged at the riser and started to pump the slider down. By the time I had the slider in my hands I was at 800m. At full speed (I have only tried the rage 97 at terminal) you generally need about a 1000ft (300m) before you have got the slider all the way down. In all 6 jumps on the 97 the slider never came all the way down on its own. I like the way it flies. Alternating front riser inputs are no problem as there is so little pressure there, even when in full dive. There is a lot pressure at the back though, which makes gripping the rears for landing a bit more tricky. The rage is a very responsive canopy without the dramatic sink rate of a velocity in full flight. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I think I have finally got my line twist problem solved
-
Last friday I had another reserve due to lines twists on my velocity. Someone then said that the Velocity is the most often cutaway main. Is this true? I have had 2 reserves in 122 jumps with the velo, both due to lines twists. A common feature was that I was probably in a slight track while pulling. If I don't manage another 100 jumps with it, without a reserve, then it's being sold. BTW the way, I don't really think this thread belongs in incidents. While it's pretty scary being under a spinning mal, it's something that we have been trained to deal with. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Why not? Did you land with the plane? I count reserve rides as 2 jumps Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

or is C++ builder a load of crap? I know I am not using the lastest version but it seems to have very little to do C++. Sorry to bore you non geek people Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Did a hop n pop last saturday. I pulled almost immediatly. I hung around in half breaks for a while until everyone else had landed. Then I set up for the gate. A 270 and then at some point during the turn my pro track started with flat line scream. I looked at the pro track read out and it said: Exit height: 175 meters (550 ft) deployment: 25 meters (75 ft)

A TM at our dropzone always explains to the students that he is not allowed to jump on his own and that's why he takes the students. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

It would be better to say my main and reserve is not TSO'ed in order to saved me a useless canopy damaging repack. I turn up at a U.S. DZ and they ask what equipment I am jumping. I don't say PdF because that might be TSO'ed, I tell em it's a PaB foreign made container and reserve. Hey presto, my German repack cycle is valid. PaB = Pull and Bounce Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Double check? I check it when gearing up. I check it again at least 3 times during climb to altitude. I check it again just before exit. I have even checked it during freefall That doesn't happen often though Glad you're O.K. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Regarding the last two replies. All my gear is Parachutes de France apart from my main which is Performance designs. I am not a resident of the U.S. So what applies? Surely just because my main is TSO'd does not mean I have to repack a foreign reserve. Or are TSO'd mains more likely to fail? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
