Eugene Skydivers- Airport Access Fight
ixlr82 replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Creswell had/has one of the nicest and safest landing areas I've ever jumped at, with outs everywhere. If this LZ is unsafe, I have yet to jump at a safe one. __________________________________________ -
Just know, you are setting yourself up for a beatdown with this statement. And unless there is something you are not telling us, yes you can and need to be ready to land downwind or crosswind. __________________________________________

My first jump there last year, I landed on the desert playa (to applause), a mostly naked girl jumped in my lap, gave me a big wet kiss, and said 'Welcome Home'. It is an amazing experience, well worth the very expensive jump tickets and the sand that gets everywhere in your rig, gear and body. Don't just show up at Burning Man with your rig hoping to jump. Won't happen. You buy your jumps before you get there. See the Burning Sky website to make it happen. And yes, the skydiving is secondary to the event itself. __________________________________________

Let's remember how awesome this sport is!!!!!

Thanks for this starting this post. With the recent canopy collisions and subsequent controversies over what to do, it is easy to get into a negative mindset. I love skydiving, it makes me smile. Sometimes, like now, I need a reminder. __________________________________________ -
Another very dumb packing question...
ixlr82 replied to shah269's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not a stupid question. The only thing stupid would be to jump with a loose closing pin. In my experience the canopy always inflates to the same volume after the d-bag is closed so, no, I don't think you can pack it too tight. Lots of little variables in packing can cause the closing loop to come through the closing flaps easier or harder, but after you take out the pullup cord the closing loop needs to be very snug. So perhaps as was stated earlier, your closing loop needs to be shortened.Very easy to do. __________________________________________ -
Ok, I know it isn't a tracking rule, but in the spirit of the thread, getting off the line of flight immediately after opening is important. At least until you have a visual on groups behind and in front of you. __________________________________________

I need help making a graceful exit

My wife flipped through her risers on a couple of static line jumps and after that she just couldn't move through the fear. Eventually she went to another DZ, transitioned to AFF for a few levels, and then was able to rejoin her home DZ to finish up her student status. Hopefully you'll get the advice you need to continue your static line pursuit, but it may not be the only option. I know I don't know you, but I doubt you are not physically capable of this. Your post suggests 'some' degree of uncertainty and fear are holding you back. __________________________________________ -
As much as I'd like to support my local camera shop, I don't think they are going to have a D200 for me for a couple of months. I've used B&H a lot without anything negative happening, but I haven't found their sales people very friendly to deal with. If you bought one mail order and it was a positive experience, who from? __________________________________________

I think the post suggesting the possibility of doing a tandem is valid and worth considering. It would take much of the pressure off you and get you back in the air. My wife did it when she hit an 'anxiety' brick wall back in AFF and it was just enough to allow her to continue moving forward. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. __________________________________________

Thanks for posting the video. It's clear how important a stable pitch is in that scenario. If I ever do try one, I'll definitely do a couple or more practice jumps without pitching to get the timing (presentation to the relative wind) down. Question: Do you normally leave RSL on for camera jumps and if so, do you have a quick release on your helmet? __________________________________________

Set you camera on a tripod. Set exposure to 'manual'. Lock the shutter open. Adjust the aperture according to preference after you capture the first lightning strike. I would also use manual focus set to infinity. Of course, if you are trying to capture a lightning strike during freefall you'll just have to be really, really fast. __________________________________________

Question 1: Did you land with the main still in the pack tray? If so... Question 2: Why would your reserve handle be up by your armpit when you are falling belly to earth (yes?) with nothing out but the pc? (serious questions-not implying anything) __________________________________________

Never do a tracking dive into the line of flight. You are tracking right into the airspace of the groups that left before you. Not only that, but if the spot were really long and the group before you pulled high...well, think about it. Only one 182 group, yeah, no problem, track away __________________________________________

PC 101-Not sure if it is still "currently available", but that is why I bought it. Being discontinued-good deal. __________________________________________

Here's my advice. Close your eyes on exit and present to the wind by 'feeling it'. Hey...it might work! Couldn't be worse. Right? __________________________________________

Can you elaborate on the 'vertigo' problem? How, what , when and if possible, why. You said this is the reason you stopped jumping. Understanding this might allow people to give you more pertinent feedback. __________________________________________

Move to Oregon. Then you'll have some weather to complain about! Hang in there. Circumstances will change. Judging from your post, you couldn't walk away if you tried. __________________________________________

Most of the major gear stores are carrying it now. For sure, Square One and Para-gear. www.square1.com or www.para-gear.com. Sorry, don't know clicky-world. __________________________________________

I think the trolls are out in full force today. Can't you guys wait until April at least? __________________________________________

AC emergency... what hight do you go to your reserve?
ixlr82 replied to yoink's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Personally, 1500 ft, or close. A heads up for the jumpers not yet aware of it. Cypres will not be active until you go above 1500 ft. AGL. So if you never get to 1500 ft., the cypres will not operate. Also, at our DZ, when we reach 1000 ft. we are often over a 600 ft. hill. ( 400 ft. AGL! ) Know where you are. __________________________________________ -
I'd be careful about spiralling down in high winds. I did it once. After several spirals I looked down and was shocked to see I had backed up another quarter mile during the spirals. Another lesson learned. __________________________________________

I've had one for over a year now. Can't compare it with anything else...haven't had anything else. It has proven to be very reliable and accurate. It is inexpensive and easy to set. You get three signals during freefall. Breakoff, (or whatever you choose as your first audible cue, this is the only one of the three altitudes you set), 2500 ft., and flat-line at 1500 ft. According to my instruction sheet you can even change the break-off warning during the climb to altitude. (I haven't though) No visuals, nothing fancy. I think if I get any other kind it will be to use as a electronic log book. __________________________________________

Section 2-1 BSR's (SIM) J. Extraordinary Skydives 3. Demonstration jumps into level 2 areas require a D license with a USPA PRO Rating for all jumpers, including both tandem jump participants. ----------------------------------------------- I'm just regurgitating the SIM, certainly no expert! __________________________________________

Frankly, this post smells like a troll. But if you are being sincere, a question for you. Are you a student still? If not, get an altimeter and see if that gets you over this mental barrier. If you are a student, consider a new instructor. __________________________________________
