  1. What is the weather typically like there that time of year? I've never been there that late in the season.
  2. I don't really think there's an advantage to doing it the way I do, but if I have the option to do something neatly, or randon/sloppy, I will do it neatly everytime. I think this applies to everything from inspecting gear to packing, to checking 3-rigns before exiting. I might go in BASE jumping, but I believe it will not be from mis-rigging or a packing error. I have always liked to "stack the odds in my favor" and since I honestly don't think we'll be stacking any odds in BASE, I like to take my preparation and knowledge as far as possible in hopes that my effort will pay off when the chips are down.
  3. That would qualify as a personal attack. Boy you're lucky I'm not a moderator or else you'd be taking a vacation. Furthermore, in the future, you may consider that you'll catch more flies with honey. Once you resort to childish attacks and name calling, your opinions are weakeded considerably. So as to the rest of your post, I didn't even read past the personal attack. I imagine there are plenty others who post in this forum who think the same as I do.
  4. I have a pretty good shot of some radical PC oscillation at GoFast. There's quite a bit on the lemmings videos as well.
  5. What about a wingsuit? Clearly that's part of the jump. What about tracking pants? What if you're wearing tracking pants with nothing underneath? Hanwaag boots? They gave those back. Katie even got her ProTrack back. I got my camera but not my camera helmet. (Of course in hindsight I should have told the judge I do tandem videos to supplement my income and that extra income was going to be critical in the payment of the fine, so keeping my camera helmet was going to hurt my effort to pay the fine off.)
  6. They did confiscate my camera. After talking to the prosecutor, they agreed to give my camera back. The footage would be returned once they made a copy of it. Well it's been over a year and I still haven't received the footage, even after numerous calls. The video is on MiniDV, a format the NPS doesn't use. Since they have to go outside their little circle to get the footage copied, "they haven't been able to copy it". Obviously, they don't trust me to copy it. I wonder what the hell they need it for anyway. I plead no contest, paid my fine, and served my probation. There was never a need for them to use "evidence" against me. So what do they need that footage for?
  7. I'm not asking for the story to be made public, but I still want to know. Somebody PM me!
  8. Well, Nunya, I don't know how to say this, but if you want help here, you're going to need to be a little more precise with exactly what you're looking for. I have no idea where you live, who you are, what your gender is or pretty much anything else. Your profile is no help. I could dig through your posts and put a profile together and figure you out a bit more but you're the one asking for help, not me. So, why don't you start by filling out your profile and we'll go from there. Hell, maybe you're a Seattle local and we can get together and discuss this over a beer. It might be exactly that easy.
  9. Jason, WTF??? Turn your PM's on! I want to know about this story. Fill me in! Nick?
  10. Another side effect, the first bandit load after being busted in the Valley, the juice is ON! I was so amped thinking about the possibility of getting busted, being freshly on probation and having just lost a rig and taken it up the ass financially. (I was alone in my cell so I didn't get the experience of having that literaly) Watching a cop car cruise by as you're standing at the exit point, fully geared up, knowing full well that you're going back to jail if you get popped on this jump... and then doing a couple practice touches on the PC as you climb over the handrail. That is when you know you're fucked. You're totally addicted to BASE. edit: typo
  11. Air delivery in that national park is a Class B misdemeanor.
  12. Switching to Asylum huh? Good choice
  13. My advice: If you're planning on jumping it, carry $500 cash on you. If you do this, you can bail out as soon as you're done processing and you don't have to spend a night in jail. They will only accept cash. Not a check, money order, credit card, or bail bondsman. CASH ONLY. You will be bored out of your mind sitting in seperate cells, and since that bail money goes toward your fine anyway, that's time better spent drinking beer and talking about the jump.
  14. Rad, I'll put you on the Chicken BASE list then. I'll let you know your number once you're entered in the database.
  15. It was a very short canopy ride. If you know the way old unvented FOX canopies inflate, then you can imagine. It was over water, but I basically had time to reach up for the toggles and then I was wet. This jump was pretty early in my BASE career, so my ability to analyze the jump was limited. I knew that it scared me and that I was content with that one jump there. I did go back later with some friends to look at it (I left out the part about having already jumped it because I didn't want that to factor into their decision making process) and they elected to not jump. There was a jet of water (that wasn't there when I jumped it) exiting the base of the dam, shooting across the landing pool, so the landing area was basically cut in half. I don't think jumping it at the time was a good idea, and I probably wouldn't jump it again, but it's a memory I have if nothing else.
  16. I'm doing chicken BASE. If you want a number, let me know. You must have been fully geared up at the exit point of all objects, then backed off. CHICKEN!!!

What seems like restrictive in the shoulder area is actually not bad. You will get used to it very quickly. I'm ultra fast on the toggles and I wondered if the Dainese shoulder protection was going to be an issue. After putting some jumps on it, I realized it wasn't an issue at all. You'll quickly get used to it.

  20. I've found all kinds of weird crap in my canopies over the years.
  21. I've done some fairly massive rope jumps. If you ever have the chance to experience one you'll notice two things: 1.) Freefall has never felt more intense. For some reason, I get way more amped in freefall than on most BASE jumps. 2.) The catch at the end of the jump is way softer than you imagined it would be. You have to consider that when you take a lead fall in the climbing gym, you are stopped abruptly because there is only about 30 feet of rope total over which the energy of your fall is distributed. On a rope jump, you have much more energy to absorb because you've been falling for longer, but the entire rope jumping rig is designed to absorb and redistribute the energy of the jump. The setup in the video is one where not only do you have all the jump line absorbing the impact forces, but that jumpline is attached to a dynamic tyrolean which is basically a massive shock absorber. I've done over 500 feet on a single 10.2mm climbing rope. This was anchored to a steel bridge girder with no tyrolean to assist in absorbing the energy. The softness of the catch was very suprising. I chatted with Dano about whether there was a better option than the GriGri since it seemed like it was spreading the load over a very small portion of the jumpline. He was convinced that it would be okay. I also have to take a moment to warn people from trying to re-create this type of jump on their own. I used to rope jump in the NorCal area with Dano, Kirk Arens, and a bunch of other guys. Pretty much every weekend and on some weeknights we'd close down the climbing gym, load the gear into our cars, and would drive off to one of several very nice spots and jump all night. We helped build the rigs we were jumping on. Dano watched what we were doing and approved, even jumping our rigs himself. Dano knew what he was doing. Kirk knew what he was doing. I left for bootcamp on October 3rd, 1998. Towards the end of bootcamp, I received a letter (because I wasn't allowed to have phonecalls) with some bad news. On the day before Thanksgiving, Kirk died making a rope jump in Auburn California. Eight days later, Dano was also dead from a rope jumping incident. Two guys who knew what was up. edit:typos
  22. I've been thinking about doing that thing in broad daylight. You know, the way the PDX guys do it "No guys, it's fine. It's a really low bust object"
  23. Hey Tom, does this have anything to do with a conversation we had at the airport?
  24. What makes a good accuracy canopy? What qualities?
