Hi, Just reading through incidents, I learned a recent swooping incident in Lodi, may have altered the DZO's standpoint on high performance turns there. Is there a landing area there separate to the main landing area, where it is O.K. to perform high performance landings? I plan to do a whole heap of jumps there in July with my partner, and would prefer to be able to perform 270' approaches. I have just acquired an Jyro (brand) Icarus (model) 105 built in 1993, for a spare canopy. Only having been in the sport for 6 years I had no idea about skydiving in 1993 From what I have learned, a 105sq/ft zp 9cell parachute must have been quite 'Gnarly' back then so to speak. This is not true, the staps become loaded when the passenger trys to lift thier legs. For skinny people it is not so much of an issue but for those with larger thighs the amount of webbing between the legstraps is not long enough for them to freely lift thier legs. Now the length has been made longer, it is not as much of an issue. The earlier y straps however really inhibited the customer when lifting thier legs. also try arching your legs when it is trying to twist up on you. I have not had linetwists on my own gear for 100's of jumps but the tandem canopies i am jumping can spin up on inflation. I use this technique and it seems to give more tention on the lines and therefore makes it less likley the lines will twist. You simply bend your legs back as if you are making a hard arch. It feels similar to the force you use when bringing your arms in while spinning to make the spin faster. sadly enough, it will probably take another 300 years for the energy companies to use more efficient ways to use the resource in that area. $$$ value is sadly determined by the supply of the resource rather then the consequence of using the product. when I am in the tropics i do not use one, in a temperate climate I use one. Though I do think a jumpsuit/pants give more control, I don't think the extra control is vital for safe operations. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

I am jumping icarus tandem mains too. Though turns of more than 180 degrees are not uncommon on these canopies, I have had relaively few linetwists. The best way to get out of linetwists is to try your best, not to get into them. One method I used to use was to touch the back of my risers on opening and try to go with the turn and this worked most of the time, but recently I have been informed of a technique that is easier and more effective; When the canopy starts to inflate unevenly, simply curl your legs back as if you are doing a hard (positive) arch and the lines will/should not twist. I havn't had a linetwist since I have been doing this (3 or so months) and have been averaging about 100 jumps a month. I guess it has something to do with the amount of tention on the lines?? I actually enjoy the Icarus openings, only 'very' really do they bang open. Unlike other tandem mains I have jumped. Hi Tom, We just had a couple of new systems arrive yesterday, I used the new harness's and they are better. the lengths of diagonal webbing on the Y strap are now longer and therefore allow more movement. it seems the problem has been identified, but we still have 2 of the older harnesses with the Y mod. I was in Zimbabwe last april, I found the locals to be quite welcoming and nice people. I was only there for a short while though. I have a few Zim friends too and they are nice people but there are some very racist comments that come from some of thier mouths. Although Mugabe is a fucking wanker and needs to be thrown out. He uses the hate that was manufactured by the colonial settlers to fuel his ways. Had the local people been treated a little better in the past the country would probably not be in the position it is in today. I don't want to make you feel bad and I feel really sorry for you as it is a most beautiful place. But that is the way I see it. African people can be most frustrating, but the hate is not manufactured by Mugabe, it was manufactured many decades ago when the local people were treated like shit. The prius is one of the first hybrid cars, they will only improve in time and money saving is not nessecarily the main objective these days. Yes sand will screw up your good rig. Use and old container like an old racer or vector that have nice comfortable harness, you don't need to drag your resaerve up and down the hill and buy a second hand canopy to use. for $500 or less. you should easily get ssome appropriate gear to use, and it will save you more than that on wear and tear on your good gear. it wouldn't be advisable to use your good skydiving gear for Speed flying on sand. If you don't find it fun, it doesn't mean others don't. Working in the skydiving industry has allowed me to travel and fund my competative skydiving. Fortunately I still have more jumps on my own gear than tandem gear. I do get quite tired after 7 or 8 tandems for the day but just because I may not have as much fun when I am tired, I still do when I am not. There are plenty of people working in skydiving that shouldn't, for the benifit of themselves, the industry and the sport. If this is you then it is time to find something else to do for a job. Vector harness's are not only more comfortable but alot safer in my opinion. Strong harnesses work to the extent where they hold the customer to the tandem pair but comfort has nothing to do with the design. falling out is what happens when instructors do not use the system properly, similar to out of sequence emergency procedures and low turn on landing. The y mod only seems to create more of a problem than it fixes. Maybe I am not using them properly? but as far as I can see the older 'y-mod-less' harnesses allow more movement of the legs and therefore are safer. It takes a very good canopy pilot to land a passenger safely when they find it impossible to lift their legs. Hi all, i am jumping at a strong DZ art presnt. the hrness i usually use is an older one but there are a couple with the Y mod. i have found thast the Y-mod inhibits the customers from lifting thier legs for landing. This is the case for small light people as well as larger people. I have tried leaving the y-strap loose but it seems to be the length between the legstraps that is inhibiting the leg movement. I am wondering if any others have found the same problem? I also wonder if the modification will contribute to more landing injuries. I would prefer not to use the harnesses with the Y strap at the moment for this reason. Also articulated passenger harnesses are not available from strong anymore....? A ski instructor can be a great ski instructor and a crap skier. A skydiving instructor cannot be a crap skydiver and a great instructor. i was a snowboard insructor and an AFF jumpmaster. Snowboard instructing was boring and actually made me less of a snowboarder as I was not consistantly pushing myself. Aff instructing takes a great amount of skill and concentration. Black and white are not ethnic groups. To think they are is unintellegent. You can be white and African, you can be black and english, you can look asian and be a third generation unted states citizen with white parents. Where do you draw the line? Classification by skin colour is ignorant. You will find it hard to find many people classified by skin colour in New Zealand. It is against the law. If you don't mind me asking how much do you earn per year? Or what % of your income does that end up being? I don't exactly know what a quintile is but we have these sort of tax deductions also.
