  1. An article that concurs with Winsors assessment: http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/almost-everything-in-dr-strangelove-was-true A comment on the following paragraph from that article: Coded switches to prevent the unauthorized use of nuclear weapons were finally added to the control systems of American missiles and bombers in the early nineteen-seventies. The Air Force was not pleased, and considered the new security measures to be an insult, a lack of confidence in its personnel. Although the Air Force now denies this claim, according to more than one source I contacted, the code necessary to launch a missile was set to be the same at every Minuteman site: 00000000. When I was working at Los Alamos in the late 1980s, the coded locks on every building I went to had the same code, and it was the default code that the locks came out of the box with. Locks are for honest people.
  2. "Dr. Strangelove" was a documentary.
  3. quote - Hiroshima had a high concentration of troops, military facilities and military factories that had not yet been subject to significant damage end quote. The civilians in Hiroshima were not targeted. Military targets were. Civilians died, yes, a lot of them, but the bombing was for against military facilities.... Therefore, no, Paul Tibbetts is not a war criminal... Again, according to Wikipedia, 66 thousand, with maybe 6ooo more from radiation... Even at your 150 thousand estimate, that is not hundreds of thousands. It would be one hundred thousand and a bit... Paul W. Tibbets, Jr. may or may not have been a war criminal, but Curtis E. LeMay was by any civilized definition, then or now. He largely succeeded in his stated objective to reduce the Japanese population "by half," mostly by the use of high explosive and incendiaries. Sir Arthur "Bomber" Harris was not much better. He ordered the bombing of Dresden, which was home to some 200,000 refugees at the time. Though the target was supposedly military in nature, the railroad marshaling yards were not targeted, and the munitions were largely high explosive sufficient to turn a Medieval city into tinder, and incendiaries to ignite it. I guess it's easier to get your body count by killing widows and orphans, since your losses tend to be lower than when attacking military targets. War is an act of insanity, and proof positive that the mentally ill are not particularly endearing. BSBD, Winsor
  4. What do you suggest? Derek V Goddamn it! I say make the bloody things as illegal and unavailable as, say, cocaine! THAT will nip it in the bud.
  5. It is ironic that someone who seeks vengeance for a perceived wrong tends to discredit themselves and engender sympathy for those who their victims. In fact, we tend to beatify victims of assassination as a matter of course. In this case, the assailant had complained that people were not sufficiently deferential to him, and he went out and demonstrated conclusively that, if anything, had been too nice to him. He reportedly shot himself after being cornered by Police. Unfortunately, he was not immediately successful in his suicide attempt. Whatever he was, his actions were detrimental to his cause.
  6. Speakers Corner is essentially a circlejerk offshoot of Buzzfeed now. What exactly is a circlejerk? It is a fraternity tradition wherein the brothers sit in a circle, and each wanks the brother to his right.
  7. Don't they teach the difference between adjectives and adverbs any more? It may be all well and good for you.
  8. More Doom and Gloom... More of the time.. Pray on it... Pray for disasters and death.. What Would Jesus DO. Jesus saves, but Moses invests.
  9. Dude is protecting the rights and freedoms of every proud American...he should be able to give himself a cool name! You have a problem with that? Mine's Rainbow Cobra. Careful now, sounds a bit gay.
  10. She's a sleazy lawyer who plays a bureaucrat on tv. You give her too much credit.
  11. You realize 'Engineer' covers Civil and Environmental types as well? All engineers are not equal.
  12. A lot of similarities to an illegal alien Hey, we could perform 'postnatal abortions' on illegal aliens - problem solved!
  13. Well, we can't prosecute you, but we CAN relocate you to the Aleutians or use you for medical experiments. That happens when they only partially give birth. Not necessarily. Btw, there is a huge difference between a first trimester D&C and the fourth trimester termination practiced by the guy in Philadelphia. Treating the two as interchangeable is disingenuous.
  14. Well, we can't prosecute you, but we CAN relocate you to the Aleutians or use you for medical experiments.
  15. Must suck to get discriminated against purely based on your appearance. How would you know? I've been stopped by cops for looking like Darth Vader on an outlaw Harley. One cop was giving me a hard time, but the cop who showed up for backup started off with "nice bike." The conversation with the motorcyclist cop (GS1100) got into the nuances of staying alive on two wheels in Philadelphia traffic, which annoyed the first cop to no end. I had another cop who was apologetic when it turned out that I was unaffiliated, saying that the Breed or some such were having a get-together in town, and that he just wanted to ensure that I wasn't a participant in the festivities. I am careful to avoid wearing anything that seems like colors or is otherwise makes a statement, since there are too many people out there who care a lot. Unlike them, the particulars of motorcycle riding do not define me. I am not sympathetic when wannabes get the shit beaten out of them for pretending to be badasses. Frat boys at my alma mater would routinely get hospitalized for insulting Harley's in biker bars. You'd have thought that they would know better, but I don't think any of them did it twice. In any event, been there, done that, got a mess of tee shirts. BSBD, Winsor
  16. James Webb once noted that he was all for women in combat until he spent time as a Marine in Vietnam. Noting that training standards were changed to accommodate women, he pointed out that training by touch-football rules didn't do much good when you go up against the Green Bay Packers. Most men couldn't make it through Ranger training, and only a vanishingly small number of women could. My hat's off to anyone who survives the whole regimen and earns the tab. BSBD, Winsor
  17. The fact that Dowding and Lord Beaverbrook were sacked for their efforts is appalling. Trenchard and Harris were furious that anyone should operate contrary to Douhet's orthodoxy. Nevertheless, good show by Fighter Command. BSBD, Winsor
  18. Not sure what you mean by "crying 'wolf'". I intend to post current news articles whenever one strikes my awareness. Four Americans were unnecessarily sacrificed in Benghazi. BHO and HC et.al. lied to us in 2008. Over 4,000 Americans were unnecessarily sacrificed in Iraq. GWB and Cheney lied to us in 2002-2003. How about some outrage over THAT! Been there, done that, got the tee shirt.
  19. I completely and utterly love it that she makes all of you absolutely lose your minds..... the misogyny is just dripping all up in here. I am not a misogynist, I am a misanthrope. There's a difference.
  20. Unless the bear came in your house and ate the cat, the issue is with you letting the cat outside. I don't see the issue. One less cat, problem solved. How does one reward the bear for his service? Feed it another one? and you think this is funny, do you? Is that a trick question?
  21. One thing that struck me a long time ago was that putting a vicious despot in charge of a social shithole is about the best you can do with said locale. When Tito was running Yugoslavia we were all kinds of mad at him, and could hardly wait until he was gone. After he went to heaven, we found out that he was the best thing that could have happened to the Balkans at the time. I was in Spain when Franco was running the show. It was considered a BAD CAREER MOVE to behave in a manner perceived as criminal; the few people who did so served as examples for those who were considering similar misbehavior. After Franco's demise, many potential criminals breathed a sigh of relief and reverted to type. Under the Shah Iran flourished, when he left they turned their clocks back a few centuries. The guys in charge now make Savak look good. Anyhow, given all that, only a fucking idiot would have wanted to remove Saddam Hussein from power, since the outcome was inevitable. Enter George W. Bush. BSBD, Winsor
