102 shot, 15 fatally, in Chicago over July 4 holiday weekend
nolhtairt replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
Nonsense. After the handgun ban in 1982, gun violence started to rise again several years later in the late 80s and then peaked to all time highs in the early 90s. Perhaps Newsweek can broaden your perspective: "over the past year, two things have accelerated the attacks, according to social workers and law enforcement authorities. Budget cuts reduced the number of anti-violence social workers who once cooled the simmering feuds, and a series of deadly police shootings and alleged misconduct by police have torpedoed the relationship between cops and residents. Over the past 18 months, the drawdown of police and social workers has led to an explosion of violence not seen in almost 20 years" Good rebuttal. -

Chicago doing what Chicago does best. -
Yeah, the times have changed, and not in a good way at all.

And to think that he used to be a US Attorney. Sad, very sad, Jerry Baumchen PS) ***You know, the taxpayers. The "little people." IMO a typical R. A Joisey boy too.

I wasn't being racist. However, you'll never find me in a night club at a rap show in the wee hours of Saturday night/Sunday morning. I'm allergic to bullets.

Just look at the comments below that video on youtube. Oh and that guy was arrested in Birmingham afterwards on unrelated charges by US Marshals.

I've always viewed restaurant minimum wage jobs as an entryway to gain experience and a working background to build towards something better later on, even if it means going to school at the same time. I've done it. Worked at a few fast food restaurants and hot food delivery services while working toward my degree. Then I left that bullshit behind when I got into the workforce based on my degree. Haven't looked back since. Gotta start somewhere though.

Already mentioned in the bonfire in the "You can't make this up news story" thread. I fully support the right to bear arms, but it comes with a huge responsibility. Don't do stupid shit!

This the issue right here. These are two of the most expensive cities to live in the US, considering home prices and rents. Compared to the cost of living in New Orleans, Detroit or Boise, or somewhere else you could get 4x the square footage for a quarter of the cost*, a national minimum wage for workers to compete in these markets is unreasonable, and comparatively speaking that same wage would make all workers in the places with lower costs of living practically middle-class. For those two markets in particular, a better course of action would be to determine what is driving the cost of living so high, and address those issues, so that workers are earning a living wage. A higher minimum wage might be appropriate as a later course of action, AFTER those other factors are addressed. The high cost of living very likely also hurts the small business, cited in your article, that were burdened by being required to pay their employees a higher wage (adding to their already high cost of business). *rough estimate -- I saw a comparison recently (Economist, maybe?) of housing prices/sizes across the US. For the reasons you listed, is why the minimum wage should be set at the state level, not the national level. There could be exceptions where a city could set its own (higher) minimum wage but not unreasonably high, due to the cost of living.

Alexandria Shooting: Shot heard around the world? [On Topic]
nolhtairt replied to jgoose71's topic in Speakers Corner
Did you include the Pulse nightclub massacre in that total by radical islamists? Ah, no you didn't. 49 were killed in that attack alone. -
at least 400 container ships traverse that corridor every day. I'm not going to speculate on how and why it happened, but it did happen at what, 2:20 AM or so? Wasn't somebody supposed to be manning the ship radar that sees other ships in close proximity? If yes, you'd think evasive maneuvers would have been ordered. Some heads are gonna roll (not literally).

He was also sane enough to decide to drive out to Alexandria in March and live out of his car a couple blocks away from the ball park and YMCA, apparently casing the place out. He knew the tradition of the annual ball game. -
Potential challenger in Russian election jailed.
nolhtairt replied to AlanS's topic in Speakers Corner
Hmmmm....Have you ever read anything about Russian history? Overall they are doing quite well at the moment compared to most of the time. It's their modus operandi. Eliminate, jail or banish political adversaries. Have been doing it for decades. At least all the way back to Leon Trotsky. You left out "Kill". Look at what happened to Trotsky. And it goes back a lot further than the Soviet revolution. The Tsars (Czars) did the same thing. Eliminate in my opinion was meant to include "kill". -

Trump to be sued by Maryland and Washington over foreign payments
nolhtairt replied to yoink's topic in Speakers Corner
There's never been a president like Trump before who was a business mogul. So there's never been a lawsuit quite like this filed. I think he did his best to cede control of his empire to his sons, but of course, he didn't completely separate himself, but not selling his assets. Which I can understand. Aren't there rules in place where the POTUS can't be sued while serving in office? -
Fair point, and I agree. Judges should be appointed at all levels based on their merits/resume/etc.

Well, she's a JUDGE, not a politician.

nolhtairt replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Serious question, what exactly is your point? I laugh at China getting on the clean air bandwagon. It's one thing to get on it, a whole other thing to actually implement the changes and enforce them. I don't see it happening. -
