If you were here, you'd think differently. Trust me. Anyway, I'm sure that not all the students here are into the trendy aspect of it, just as not all "patriots" are of the type that Bill and I don't get along with. I hold fast, however, in my assessment of the situation. As a journalism major, I have covered a couple of these events and have found that most students are there to stand in front of the camera and nothing more. It's sad, but true.

0 jumps for me, too... I've got non-skydiving relative work to do...
-
First- thanks, Max, for your attitude and for your commitment to our country. I'd be standing next to you if it weren't for my lack of a medical waiver. Secondly- You aren't listening. I am not in any way saying that protests are cool and fun and trendy. I am saying that they should not be. I agree with you, war is a very serious issue and should be treated as such. My problem is with those who only protest because their friends are doing it.
-
Me too, Bill. That annoys me even more than the peaceniks on campus, but, like you said, And since there are less of them, I don't have to be annoyed as much. Thus, my anger for them doesn't bubble over. You make a great point, and I totally agree.
-
Haha... But it's soooo tempting...

Actually, that's a lie. I hate the people I see all around me who protest the war and promote peace because it's trendy. This college campus is so full of people who have no idea what this conflict is even about, but they're the first ones to stand up and yell for peace. Don't get me wrong- I'm all about free speech. I respect those (like Billvon) who desire peace in this situation and disagree with Bush's policies. That's great. You're entitled to your opinion and I'm glad to hear you share it. The problem is that everywhere I turn on campus, I see another peace rally because it's the "cool" thing to do. There are "bikes for peace and a better environment", "journalists for peace", "aggies for peace", "poetry for peace", "let's watch movies for peace" rallies all over the place. I'm sick and tired of it. Here we are at a degree-granting institution, supposedly a place of higher learning, and we have innumerable students who can't or refuse to think for themselves. Blah.

Switching from Static line progression to AFF
rocketfeuille replied to bradcurn's topic in Safety and Training
My wife had a similar problem. She is super flexible was over-arching. So, during the Holiday Boogie at Eloy this year, she went through the AFF program and was hugely successful (her instructor actually had her skip a level... that's my girl!). So the moral of the story is this: doing a couple AFF jumps might help you to find out what a good arch feels like, rather than just experimenting with it until you get it right, as you would on static line. -
I have 70 jumps and have not yet had a cutaway... A couple of hard pulls, but nothing that took me more than a second longer than normal to clear... But that's why I generally pull a little high. The other weekend, though, I opened with a diving right turn and was surprised to find myself evaulating its malfunction potential immediately. After landing, I realized that I had known rightaway that it wasn't a mal and fixed it.

ratio of cutaways to fatals
rocketfeuille replied to rocketfeuille's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree, bread, but it's interesting information all the same. -
I would definitely take the money. I've got needs, too, ya know... But I have to agree with Keith, too. Something seems weird about this whole thing. I kinda think, though, that the weirdness exudes from Elizabeth and not from the dad. One report I read said that she had been questioned by polive several times and gave them a false name. Why would she do that? And like someone else said, why didn't she get up out of that tent and skidaddle is she was by herself? I don't get it... edited to add the link to the article: http://msnbc.com/news/884413.asp

ratio of cutaways to fatals
rocketfeuille replied to rocketfeuille's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I can't imagine that anyone would know, because I'm sure that data's never been collected on the subject, but I thought I'd send the question out anyway. So... no one will respond and it will be on page 72 in a couple days... No big deal, right? -
ratio of cutaways to fatals
rocketfeuille replied to rocketfeuille's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In another post, Bill said we lose about 30 people a year. Does anyone know how many cutaways there are? Anyone have even a rough estimate? -
Thanks for the hospitality, Bill. I realize that it's the middle of the week and it'll be difficult for most people to find the time to jump, but I figure it's worth the post to find out. I wish I could stay out there for the weekend, but I need to get back home...

Hey everybody... I'll be in San Diego that Wednesday and Thursday and I was wondering if there was anyone who will be making jumps at either Perris or Elsinore and would like to get togther on a couple. Thanks. edited b/c I'm a moron who can't put words together to form sentences...

No results because you have no idea how to make a noun possesive... Yup... Absolute hilarity.

1 trip to cali cancelled:4:1 1st camera jump (2 Mr. Bills). A beautiful weekend made me glad to be alive and jumping.
-
I thought that when my wife started jumping that it would be really cool... Much to my chagrin, everytime she gets in the plane I'm more nervous for her than I ever was for myself.

Nice work with Photoshop. I'm impressed.

Regardless of whether or not her organs were salvageable, it is an outrage that the mother would sue! It's ridiculous! Maybe if she were a legal resident and taxpayer, I wouldn't mind so much, but she's not. And furthermore, that an American citizen would be treated in such a manner while a non-resident gets the spa treatment is preposterous.

How 'high performance' is the Diablo? How does it compare to the Triathlon in terms of compatibility with a low-number jumper?

I tried to start up a club at New Mexico State, but the school won't charter us unless we take out a $1 million insurance policy...

Here's one I heard this weekend: Q: How many Frenchmen does it take to defend France? A: No one knows... It's never been done!

Don't get me wrong- all the guys at the DZ are very friendly and some of the nicest guys I know. The problem is that a lot of them have plans for what they want to do, and I end up messing with those plans. I never meant to paint my home DZ in a bad light with this post. It's a great DZ and I love it and the people there. I was just so excited to have made a good jump that I had to post for the sheer joy of it.

Trust me, I'm trying to do all this. I made the post because I was so overjoyed that I finally got a chance to do what I've been hoping for so long to do.
