Its normally the fans / prop blades that make the noise... I just love being picky Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
I have to say I am a little unsure how much of a nirvana this would be also... I cant imagine being the operator of a two level facility - what happens when things go wrong? or different sizes of people? (one speed fits all?!) Must be one hell of a good booking plan to ensure everyone wants to do the same things on each level Still... does sound good not to waste air! Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Ahh thats OK - I just ignored it as I didnt want to point out for everyone to see that you didnt realise its not the motor that makes the noise Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
I am not so sure about that! - I reckon I could manage at lease 2 seconds of freefall before the pain started. But hey - motor arrives on Weds... so not really so long to see! Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Awww for shame.... if only our tunnel was by the side of yours.... we could let you stand on the top of our motor room and swing down to measure that high... Ok Ok ... enough playing lets just end here with the basic agreement that Bedford is best Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
And if we made our tunnel 30ft wide we would need a bigger motor too Recirculating does make a difference - but we only use the size motor we need to... which incidently is bigger than yours We use as much power for our chillers as most do for their drive! Beat that! Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
It is indeed.... but I would need a little convincing that you could fly far left of the diameter 70ft up in the same way that you could at say 10ft up. I am sure there must be dissipation alot as you go alot higher.... I dont dispute that you can rocket up to 70ft and play around but not really all usable space up there I doubt. also as the air dissipates higher so must the windspeed. so not a consistant fall rate throughout the 120ft! And you know me Dawn - love healthy banter and always friendly Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Actually no... If I was counting building sizes... we have alot more across the floor... so if weare taking height against height our building size dwarfs yours quite a bit... and covers more sq-ft on the ground I guess too And unless I am pressing the wrong buttons on my calculator (which is always possible) we have 1376 cubic feet of flyable air. Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Is that the best you can do?! Ours is 140ft tall - 50ft diameter (tunnel structure) 16.23ft dia flight chamber x 27ft high (and thats a constant speed for all 27ft!- no cone shapes here!) Lets not talk about motor sizes I wouldnt want to embarrass you. Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Arguably the 'tunnel' is bigger in every way. If you mean output of wind height on an open jet then that isnt part of a building structure Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Well... if you see how many chocolate bars I eat you will agree that more wind is needed! Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
Not that I want to boast... but its also bigger than any private or military one too Other than the NASA 20ft tunnel (which can only reach speeds of 50mph ish so not fast enough to fly) there arent any science tunnels bigger either. Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
I can believe that easily! - I have seen docs etc from our tunnel origins and I would bet that even 30years earlier that much was spent by the MOD here. Just as an aside... we also have unearthed the original construction pics for our site!! yayy! and they are awesome. If youre interested I can post a couple or email them to you.

Is this a mobile that has ever been built? Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
You wouldnt... you would need to keep it cool! - this is done mostly by bringing in cold air from the outside. All recirculating systems need to be kept cool as the air heats up as it is moved by the fans - that old Isaac Newton messed it up for us with his laws of conservation....
-
Not for a little while yet sadly - we have filled our weekends for the next 2 months... but do intend to get to every UK DZ hopefully. We will try to get a date in the diary ASAP.
-
Hi, The tour is really just a chance for us to meet skydivers from all over - talk a little about our fantastic facility and answer any questions you may have. Its also a nice day out for us (fingers crossed on the weather!) On the tour we have a few freebies / chocies! and some promotional offers. Plus people get to see our photo album and check out the works before our opening soon. Come over and say hi at the weekend and I will see you then!
-
I know I am not Andy - but... yes Dave is. He's not half bad.... Ive shown him a trick or too (I wish) Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
-
That greatly depends on the quality / quantity of the footage being used. Also whether or not the individual will benefit from showing the footage (ie local dropzone) or its just a film transaction. We want to show great skydiving with our takehome video which will also contain great tunnel flying - so we will be happy to negotiate with whoever supplies this

Quotealso for the Bedford wind tunnel aswell[/repy] We will be doing our test flights in June/July with our public opening likely to be August... exact date will be announced Paul Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk

Hi, Our 'try us out' offer can be booked over the phone - call us on 0845 200 2960 The wind was a little harsh on Saturday so we figured we miss quite a few people! - hopefully see you soon!
-
It is certainly a possibility... but given the dates it will probably have to be after our opening So far the response from DZ operators here has been fantastic and we are frantically planning weekends in over the next few months. I am keen to see us working closely with skydivers all over Europe and I for one would love to visit as many places as possible! Happy to send over a promo-pack in the meantime though! - can you PM me details of a relevent contact there? Many thanks

Water cooling / AC / etc are all pretty much the same idea - if you have a free source of cold water then that works great! Build your tunnel next to a lake and you have no problems I am guessing you mean using cold water to cool a coil or heat exchange of some sort in the air? If so its just then a question of pumping and source..... Our lack of lake side premises means we are installing mechanical chillers (ie AC) which cool a water/glycol mix this cooling is transferred to the air via air heat exchange coils (much like a car radiator in reverse) And as you say Dawn - is expensive! but well worth it for the quality of environment... I did consider just moving the UK to Florida - but that was pricey too!
-
Without going into local ambient / structural influence etc you could guess at least 50% of the motor power would need to go into a cooling unit. Our chillers are HUGE and cost an arm and a leg - but to get a regulated flow temperature it is necessary. This is the reason we do not allow lighted matches in the tunnel we need to ensure the recirculated gases remain un-harmful at least in the temperature stakes anyhow! Freeflying is possible with us - and with alot of space to do stuff! - however as with all other facilities a greater demostration of ability is required to ensure safety. Our coaching programmes cover all aspects of freefly also and we have spoken already to alot of world class skydivers regarding on site coaching and tunnel camps. As soon as we have our first camp dates we will let you know!
