Yah Betsy. You're supposed to "break in" the visitors. Not just "break" them. Poor girl.

Good luck in your recovery. Yah, if you need someone to talk to I've been there before. Not injured like you but had the doo doo scared out of me after an engine failure off runway landing. PM sent. Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125

I once bought a GF a complete rig. Main/reserve/container. She broke up with me some weeks later. Can't remember how much after really. That sucked. I ended up demanding the rig back later. It still didn't make me feel better. Hey, I'LL date you if you buy me a new rig. Umm...read the highlighted abreviation. That's GF for GIRL friend. Move along Joe Blow.

Well Skydive Chicago is one of the best DZs I've ever seen. I've worked at more than a few and yes, I used to work full time at SDC as a packer and as a pilot. The facilities (hangar, packing area, lounge, deli, training rooms, AFP student rooms) are just great. The swimming/fishing pond are such a nice thing to have. Now they have built a cabana on one of the decks for surving food and drinks. It's a nice touch to all the great food we get from Chef Tim. I can't talk this guy up enough. He's cooks really great food and charges way beyond reasonable prices for it. There's nothing like making 5-6 jumps a day without much effort, hitting a shower, then kicking back watching the sun set with a beer in hand hanging with my friends eating great food. Oh yah, and they have two of the best maintained Twin Otters I've ever seen. They do more engine work to keep them well tuned than most places I've been to. They are serious about their student gear and keeping everything tip top. They have employees that kick ass and make every student feel welcome. I believe their retention rate (coming back for second tandem and going into AFP transition class) is one of the highest in the country which says you can do high numbers AND give personalized service. They offer Load Organizing from highest experience to just off of student status. There is something for everyone. SDC has seminars many times a year and it's a great place to get information from industry leaders. Pick a weekend (or week) and come out. There's always something going on. Highlights of the season are Spring Expo, Memorial Day Weekend, July 4th, and SummerFest. Yah, I may sound like an advertisement for the DZ but how can I not be proud to be a part of this DZ? If I didn't like it, I wouldn't have worked there. Plain and simple. Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125

Who Lives and Who Dies????
diverdriver replied to MakeItHappen's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
During my time in school for my aviation degree we spent time doing accident investigation. And you know what? A big portion of that time was studying human factors (decision making) and how it led to accidents. It has EVERYTHING to do with accident investigation. And it is not speculation. You can interview friends, family, co-workers as to the state of mind and prior history of an accident pilot and you can see how these experiences led to their death. It is not speculation. It's not voodoo. Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125 -

Again, it has a lot to do with exit type. Many FF exits are all freeflown so no intricate setup is necessary like 4-way. So, usually they take less time in the door. If they are going to go relatively straight down to where they exit (assuming normal summer winds for me) I would turn the light on later. However, you are right. If it is a seriously intricate FF launch with lots of grips the light would then go on earlier again. I just don't see it as much. Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125

Who Lives and Who Dies????

Yah, like those who didn't read the whole sign when it said "don't walk". What kind of response is that? Only read the first half of your post? I would recommend that you read the whole post. She has a lot of smart things to say. It just might keep you alive. There are attitudes on aviation that can get you killed: To repeat, the dangerous pilot attitudes which have been identified are:- Anti-authority Impulsiveness Invulnerability Macho Deference The proposed antidotes to these negative (and dangerous) attitudes are:- Hazardous Attitude Antidote Anti-Authority: "Don't tell me.""Follow the rules. They are usually right." Impulsivity: "Do something - quickly.""Not so fast. Think first." Invulnerability: "It won't happen to me." "It could happen to me." Macho: "I can do it." "Taking chances is dumb." Deference: "What's the use." "I'm not helpless. I can make a difference." Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125 -
Any DZ that has ever operated has -somebody- that refuses to go back there for any number of reasons. My reasons for not returning usually have to deal with safety issues like aircraft maintenance (surprise, surprise).

NOPE! It was another plane with spinning propellor that chopped that up. Course, why let the truth get in the way of a witty caption sent around the internet at least 10,000 times. Man, we spend more time debunking stuff on the net than actually figuring out new stuff these days. Good and bad to every tool. I think Al Gore should come up with some sort of fix for this. I mean, he can't just create "the bomb" and walk away. He has a responsibility! LOL.

Oh glad to see someone post Skydive Chicago in there. I've been off the forum for a couple days. Thanks Wally. No doubt! 4th of July boogie at SDC is always great! The fireworks display is better than most CITY displays. We have Chef Tim cooking on the pond deck and man, it's just hard to describe. It's a great time YEAR AFTER YEAR! So come on out. Fly into Chicago Midway or O'hare and takes about 1.5 hours to drive out to Ottawa. Camping, bunk house, wireless interent, shower house, etc... all available to you! AND! I think we can go for that DZ.com bigway RW record! We definitely have a few resident DZ.com posters and several lurkers. Whatcha say? Come on out! I dont know if its because I have not skydived for a while but my thought was that the jumpers spotted and not the pilot! You should ALWAYS look down for traffic. But what's the difference between and experienced jump pilot up front with MORE info than you looking down out the back at the ground? Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125

ABSOLUTELY I take into account what type of group AND which group (personally) is climbing out. I usually talk to the distinctive groups at some point and get a repor (sp?) going about what I think about spotting (how and when I turn the lights on) and what they are thinking. That way we are on the same page. An example, we were practicing for the 98 RW Bigway record and Da Base captain and I were having issues with climbout timing. He was waiting in the door after my green light came on. I had the most information on winds, drift, and timing to make things more accurate. After a 100 way landed off Roger lined us both up and chewed some ass. You know, after Roger was done Norge and I looked at each other and got it all straightened out and it has set the way I deal with spotting bigways. I always talk to the guys in the door (whoever it's going to be) before we go up so we are all clear on what to expect. They should know exactly where over the ground they'll be when I turn on the door and climbout lights. I might adjust a couple of seconds sooner or later but we should be fairly close. So, back to the question at hand, if I have FF exiting first I do turn on the green climbout light later (closer to actual exit spot) because they usually don't take as long to climb out as a large RW group or 4 way team AND I know they don't drift as much. Also, when you get really nerdy about it I also consider what kind of canopies they fly as to where I want them out. But that's all part of the "Art of Spotting."
