Thanks for the post Han-solo In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

QuoteI was always (and still am) the type that can make road trip (no matter how long, or expensive) make a single BASE jump, and then sit around the rest of the day with a beer feeling like the king of the world.*** I think that this the the most over looked thing in things we do...It's the moment we over look in spending the hole day trying to better it. I remember a day surfing on a hudge swell when i lived in Malibu..it was just awsome and as big as its ever been there...I caught one wave ..everything was right.. the takeoff the placment the ride...my turns the sun the air ...everything was just too perfect...Rode it from 3rd point all the way to first point and to the beach.....i walked and sat on the beach and just enjoyed the way that made me feel the rest of the day...I didnt need to go back out...i already was feeling better than i thought i could that day.... Its all about small moments that make better days.... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

It's no different than what we do in our own simple days and lives..Some get in a car and drive with a purpose. Some get in a car , talk on the cell put on makeup..then pretend they are driving when in fact they are the closest thing to a statistic than they realize.. Some get a small japanese car trick it out ,nitrous, hopped up engine, to race ,when at 30mph impact, you can die in that car. It makes no sense other than they....statistic multiplyers, are pushing everyone limits around them.. in a broad sense...if have to try to put it in to numbers...it would be the same as 2 guys... One base jumping and the other driving next to the stupid woman not paying attention, talking on the cell phone about nothing, and putting on makeup to boot at 6:00 driving 70 miles an hour down the freeway about to miss her exit...... I think its all relative....... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

Jaap, Youve just discovered the secret of life....every day, different day,day every, day different...... As growing up surfing....we always new that random swells where just runs of occurences....there was no real reason....we just enjoyed them as they came... Jaap.....There is no counter....you are the counter...dont start giving your brain any ideas about how to start counting..... Your brain only does what it has been told or taught to do.....dont start now... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

I was going to write something but Ken Millers risk assesment hits it right on the nail. The equipment , setup and simplicity is far better than skydiving gear. Take a look at the Fatality list....You dont see equipent failure as a cause of death. It's you...Your body position, your decision to jump ,your pack job, and of most....your brain controlling your actions. I think it is fair to assume that you can do this for along time. I see a fatality on the freeway near my house every week. I travel the same freeway every day. Does that mean i am still hear because i have better odds or does it mean i am more alert, pay more attention and know at what time of the day my risk increases and adjust to the conditions where as a driver who never adapts to conditions has a better chance to be a statistic. It's a tough question that everyone has there own theory. ok i lied....i wrote something..... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

I agree with you Nick, But for me i see the need for experienced people like yourself to find ways to preserve base as a hole. The equipment has come full circle..as safe as you can make it. Sure its more mainsteam but so is skydiving..It came along way.. If you look at the website for these guys the requirments for jumping these A's are very strict. I think it helps people want to get the right training to do this kind of things. I just dont see sneaking out to a A in the middle of the night in the dark...with 20 or so some odd jumps a great way to gain experiance. Well for me anyway ..and i am looking at what i will need to pusue this sport in a smart manner. I dont see doing a B in the night with the same amount of jumps as smart training. If we dont live near a easy object that can be jumped without the added extra things one has to think about....gettiing caught...busted...hurt...sued...crippled...and just concentrate on the jump itself..i think we would have better trained people out there ....I cant see myself doing 20 some odd safe bridge jumps....doing another 20 some odd A jumps in the middle of the night to prepair me for Europe....I dont think i would have the visiual or mentel skills to do it correctly... Aagain i could be totally wrong and off base...i have never based jumped..but i am persistantly asking every and any question that comes to mind in a effort to better prepair myself for doing just that...And with my head and not my balls..... It's funny, i never asked.. well...mabey one or two questions about skydiving before my first jump.It just shows you that base jumping is at a hole different level... Really enjoy your posts Nick and hope all is well with you! In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

These guys are way ahead of the game. Making legal tower jumps.... and even a smoke stack boggie in daylight....sponsered In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

Pretty cool these guys seemed to be pretty organized to get a legal A jumps and a Stack boggie.... Pretty cool.... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

I may have not explained myself right but what you say is correct. i think what i was trying to get across is that there is no pause.....you pause you die...or well pretty fu$#%ked up and crippled. You "have to act instinctively...immediately...Yes when climbing you are at risk when you leave the ground until you decend back to the ground. That could be all day. Takes alot more thought... I'll give you a $1.00 at least.. In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"

I wish other people had your intelligent approach to it. Its not just about whether people have the right canopy experience*** I would say canopy experience when you 180 and are 20 feet from the wall....That quick thinking canopy experience...... It seems more like climbing than skydiving to me...."you need a brain"...... In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"
-
ok ..that sells me....but what about opening 180....is then speed a issue?? What would be the ultimate canopy for being able to stall cleanly...to be able to back off a wall with rear riser input and front... be able to sink in..or at least acceptable... I know ...its a wish list but as new to base i would first be looking to fill the experiance bucket to match the luck bucket and then push my skills as they mature. Maybe vents arent good for a beginner...but stuck against a object....i would vouch for more time to work out problems that i am not yet experianced enough to handel yet as auto as i should. "not everyone is able to do continues jumps off a legal and safe span" so i would assume the majority are forced to pick it up a bit...hence the "luck bucket" will dictate. I am just looking for something that at opening is not ....hunting and is ...a bit forgiving... and let me fill my skill bucket before i need to use my luck bucket.. anyone care to offer? Thats just my point....doing to much in too short of time for all the wrong reasons....i.e...money....fame.... publicity...i.e pay for the training and trip....jumping a first time object....with probably no camera experience....i jumped a camera for a hundred or so jumps and i dont know squat...... this seems to me a anatomy of a dead man..... How about some quantom physics..... a worm hole for example....that could explain alot of mishaps.... Im sorry...I ment Black hole..... maybe that will explain it....they just where just at the wrong place at the wrong time... Sorry Nickster....i could not resist....The conversation was getting too deep....... http://www.crystalinks.com/black_holes.html In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... Definitely. It's rare to find people who are just looking for adrenaline rush sticking around very long. There's an awful lot more to this sport than that. *** Would this apply to the "guy" i wont use names....who ..and i read about his training....did the pakistan jump....and from the video i saw was tumbeling on his back...actually both of them.. the hole way down.... how they lived....."had to be Luck" a example of trying to do too much to soon....This is a sport that your progression has to flow and mature rather than churn and burn...It is definetly a brain not a balls sport....can anyone add to this....? Ok, i will give the perspective from the other side "wanting to base" but havent yet. I would whole hardedly agree with all of Toms points. I think it's pretty obvious that we all have our own inner deamons to satisfy and they all come for different reasons. I have been around skydiving a long time hense my low 600+ jump #'s and being around it 20 some odd years. Did in the military and years later got current again. I have always been into these sports.. Growing up rock climbing, surfing skateboarding, platform diving, Free diving , kiteboarding, anything that seemed to 'freaking Cool". If you grow up in states that provide a breeding ground for these sports , it's hard not to get involved. Hence my all of a sudden burining passion to base jump. i have been surrounded in the past with experianced base jumpers but it never came out and bit me in the ass. It was usally my obsevation to a antenna jump video or building jump as... your wacked.... Hence the not understanding the sport, equipment preperation and learning, the out sider see's this as a "Super Extreme activity" performed by crazy people... I know different now....hence the ask questions, read, research......I think it is also key to ground crew..actually see in person what it is really like....it looks great in the videos but is a hole lot different actually doing it. There is one thing watching a guy with a thousand base jumps wingsuiting Norway and another thing when your ass is tumbling unstable at exit at the same site with your 100 jumps...I bet it will all seem different than you thought it would be.... This is when you need to be as Tom Said,"switched on"....this awarness level is what will either save you or finish you. Like surfing or any other sport that requires a Hightend awarness level and to act like a machine when things are going wrong.... I will also go along with the smack assesment. It also all changes when you hammer in. I did in all my ventures including hooking and bouncing and living to do it another day. It makes a hell of a difference...You gain a hole new respect for what you are doing.....I would have to say that for me it's just on the "10 things i do before i die list"....To base Switz, Norway and Italy. The videos got to me. The actual flying aspect...the hike, the view...the outdoors and yes the thrill of doing something you feel fee......It's hard to really pin down but thats what i have come up with so far....I am 46 married, kids, mortage the hole package.....I have many decisions to make...ie. life insurance....could bounce....health insurance....could live threw the bounce....financial responsabities....bounced...lived... crippled....can't work to support family....then what.....Theres alot of things to think about besides just the jumping... It's not as simple as it seems. I could go to my FJC and get on the bridge and look down and the say" What the fuck am i doing"....You never know until you are there..I think that what Tom and other experienced base jumpers are doing will only make the sport better. I have learned more in the last month reading and listening to base jumpers in this forum than i have in the past 20 some odd years. So dont change anything.....This is good stuff.. Peace all....Chris In the end...the universe has a way of working itself out.... "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"
