I have dozens of those and video backup. Heres one. A riverboat casino on the Fox River in Aurora Ill. hired us to jump for an event they were having. They wanted all ten of us to land on a single lane bridge over the river,next to where the casino boat was tied up. It was an extremely poor location as the water just downriver from the bridge went over a spillway. Ten guys there might be a big pileup. At the time I was team captain so it was up to me to talk the casino folks out of the bridge. It was a fight but I got them to agree to a small grass area next to the firestation about 100 feet away. We had hired Tom Dolphins TwinBo for the jump. Ever had ten guys with smoke brackets on both feet in a TwinBo ? Yeah ....sardines. So its showtime.....we are doing a racetrack pattern waiting for the go ahead....watching the clouds roll in. By the time we ae a go.....the DZ was totally socked in, down to 2000'. I tell the pilot take her down and lets see what we get. At 2000' we are clear and I set him on jumprun and tell the pilot when I yell...to climb like a raped ape. I'm spotting.......theres the DZ.....I yell at the pilot he starts climbing....getting us another 500' I go out first.....supposed to be a stick of ten hop n pops. I look back and my buddy Pat and my smoke brackets are hooked.....pulled him out with me. He dumped......my bracket went into the Fox River. HAHAHHAHA Jim reading about you dropping the smoke lanyard reminded me of a jump my demo team did into a MLB stadium. We had the guy with the big flag......and you know how that works.......just before landing you chop the shotbag and it gently floats down on its little canopy. My buddy George set up a little late on his final....he needed the drive the Flag was restricting.....he chopped the shotbag a little higher than normal, the little canopy failed.......whooooooosssh straight down onto the hood of a brand new Chevy truck in the parking lot. We had to replace the hood....the air cleaner....the battery and the windshield. Those shotbags are HEAVY. Like you said.....the stuff you learn while learning. bozo bozo Pain is fleeting. In the first ten years I spent in the sport I lost 3 friends. Not really close friends but close enough. I was affected....digested the loss and drove on. If you look at the Bonfire you will see a thread, "It's Been Five Years" The person in that thread became as close to me as anyone in 26 years skydiving. We fought, we teased....we hated one another and loved one another... but most of all we understood one another. When I got the call from Lodi that she had gone in, it was as if someone had kicked me in the stomach. I had never dealt with this. The next day I went to the DZ and made a solo ......to think and reflect.Five years later I'm still jumping. People die....we go on. bozo bozo Pain is fleeting. Glory lasts forever. I’ll say this one last time: signed waivers, though not perfect protection, are pretty effective, they usually make a huge difference in court, and DZs are FAR better with them than without them. Oh, please gang waivers hold up far more often than not. It isn't perfect protection but it the best we have. It has saved the collective asses of many a DZ and instructor over the years both from injured "skydivers" I can speak first hand about this. Many years ago as a TM/I at our local DZ an older lady, late 40s signed up for our student program.....I took her thru the tandem progression.....then sent her off to the AFF crew.....she did well and was released to jump on her own. At approx. 40 jumps she had a mal on her main......she failed to cutaway as she had been trained.....and dumped the reserve into the fouled main. She went in with a half opened reserve and a ball of shit main. She survived with major broken bone.....pelvis, femurs, back and paralysis. A couple years after the incident the DZ is served with a lawsuit from her....to include myself, the DZO, the AFF guys....even the guy that picked us up in the van. She said we didnt train her well enough. Long story short...they upheld the waiver in court. With out digging out my old newspaper clippings and double checking the first name. Yes there was a 3 stack that wrapped at a demo in littleton/arvada and Vance was one of them.I have the news photos and stories in a scrap book some where. Chris was still recovering from his self described achievement of becoming "Ground Plane #1". He was jumping in cold weather with heavy gloves and a CAST on one arm. He went in in San Antonio with nothing out. Took out part of a house too. Thanks guys. I was hoping that wasnt the case. RhondaLea.....you missed my point. This was an old man......all alone.....and this group of young people had a long history of harrassing him. They finally surpassed the limit of his patience. Of course it was wrong.......but in his position, aging, watching his once nice neighborhood degrade, afraid to come out into his yard....all this stuff added up for this man. It may have been much the same for the guy the thread is about. Bottom line......we all have limits. 25 years ago I worked for the UP railroad .There was a nice old guy in his 70s who cleaned our offices, lunchrooms etc. I really liked him. As it turned out, he was a WWII combat vet that had seen a bunch of action......he lived in an older part of Vegas and had lived there since he came home from the war. Making a long story short......as in a lot of older neighborhoods a bad elelment had moved in. The next door neighbors were a hispanic family that were not an asset to the area. They and the old guy did not get along and the teenage sons harrassed him terribly. One afternoon they were parked in front of his house drinking beer and playing the music extremely loud.......he had had enough. He killed all three boys with a 12 guage.
