Optimums have a higher resale value because they cost more... DUH! I would expect them to retain a bit higher percentage of their original value over time. The optimums have advantages that are desirable, and someone on a budget that wants one (but can't afford new) might be willing to pay a premium (in terms of percentage of original cost) when considering a used reserve. Do you know the details of how a business can structure their offer? It doesn't matter what is "typical" if a DZ can offer whatever discount they want. What is it about a spandex pouch that you think makes it immune compared to a cordura pouch? I've never seen an example of a PC that couldn't be easily extracted, it might be worthwhile if we discuss what it actually takes to make it happen. No, that is not true. Twice now I've mentioned scenarios that have happened many times. Lines getting snagged on mis-set grommets, and lines grabbing on to main container flaps. It can also happen if the bridle or lines snag any other part of your body or equipment. The person said that with an uncocked PC, it did not lift the bag out of the container. A pull out system does not assure that. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. The rest of your post doesn't support your assertion of total bullshit. I don't know what you mean. I said (as you did also) that a pull-out doesn't eliminate a horseshoe, it just takes away one cause for it. I think the other causes are likely more common. Those other causes - such as lines snagged by mis-set grommets and lines wrapping around flaps of the main container have happened many times and are not related to the PC type. I believe the most common cause of a PC in tow is an uncocked kill line, which as an earlier post showed can cause an in tow situation even with a pull out. the horseshoe im talking about is where you bridle is out and your pin and pilot are still in. Like you stated there are many kinds of horseshoe mal's. For a belly flyer, that kind of horseshoe wouldn't even matter much, because you would still have a normal deployment after pulling out the PC. It might scare your friends, and you wouldn't want to do flips with the bridle out, but it is not the traditional horseshoe mal where the container is open. A pull out PC does not eliminate horseshoe mals, and does not eliminate a PC in tow mal. really??? doesnt eliminate a horseshoe! the only way you could have a horseshoe mal is if you continue to 'HOLD" the pilot chute and let your bridle flop out there in no man's land and good luck with that!! Yes, really! It doesn't eliminate a horseshoe, because a horseshoe mal can have other causes. Among other things lines have been snagged by a grommet that is not set completely, lines have wrapped around the flaps of the main container. Both of these scenarios have happened plenty of times, and are completely independent of the type of PC. A throw out can be packed into the BOC pocket in a way that is very likely to have it extracted in the scenario of a horseshoe caused by a broken closing loop/closing pin coming out. Even if the PC doesn't get extracted on its own, I think it might be as easy to find a throw-out PC handle in this scenario as it is to find the floating handle of a pull-out PC. You never said anything about it, but others did. I was adressing those comments. A PC in tow can still happen with a pull out, as shown by a post in this thread involving an uncocked PC. I think it just looks like the cutter isn't going all the way across. The profile of the cutter changes - becomes a knife edge so the appearance changes. Solar and wind power are especially well suited to be used to split water. fxc 12000 in a normal cypress/vigal ready container?
sundevil777 replied to kgp4death's topic in Gear and Rigging
I wish the Astra lived up to its promises, but it doesn't (even with the switch cover). A guy had a misfire at my DZ in '02 at about 10K, and yes it did have the latest updates. When I was in the market to buy an AAD for the first time, I wanted to believe the Astra was a good option, but then I read many, many first hand and witness accounts of misfires, and other problems. I quickly realized why they actually do have a bad reputation. The Astra can be reset/recalibrated at whatever altitude that an intermittent circuit (power)/glitch/whatever happens. However the Cypress will shut itself off if it had an interruption of power-you have to go through all the button pushes to turn it back on, and then it would fail/not calibrate itself while climbing. It is also way too easy to forget to turn it off between jumps - the batteries go dead very quickly. The Astra is just as "unintelligent" as the vigil - not able to filter out data that is not possible for a skydiver to experience, so it is similarly vulnerable to activation when it shouldn't. I was going to tell you to replace the relay, just didn't see your thread before you had a pro do it. The same thing happened to mine, and the local appliance parts store suggested trying the relay, only about $30 and really easy to replace so it was worth a try. $150 isn't too bad a price for a successful repair. A very high percentage of people will say great things about their rig, especially if they bought it new. That might mean that people have a bit of their ego tied up in their equipment, and want to confirm their wisdom that led to spending $2k+, or it could just mean that you are likely to have good results with a rig that is made to your measurements that hasn't been abused by someone else. I think it is a bit of both. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Are you intending to buy new? What negatives about the V3? Don't trust the reviews to give you a full range of opinions about anything. Why not the other mfgs? Have you read any of the articles from this list regarding containers? http://www.dropzone.com/safety/Gear_and_Equipment/index.shtml That is a good place to start to increase your knowledge. What narrowed your choices to just those? Are you intending to buy a new container? Do you know how to spell the word "and"? Different way to flare?
sundevil777 replied to millertime24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
See, that's kind of what I was thinking. Plus lets not forget that you have the added fact that the canopy is a piece of fabric and not a solid wing which could also play into the characteristics of this. Some used to do it with the old strato-star 5 cells. They made it work very well. Perhaps it is a good way of adding lots of drag to stop forward speed after you've already leveled out. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am -

That probably means that the locking stows came out (not stowed properly), or more likely that the locking stow bands broke. That is why I like locking stows that are not so easy to break. The thing was moving really, really slowly. Just like you'd expect a sub sonic airplane at 35k to look like as it was still far away. The reflections from the sun mentioned earlier make perfect sense, can't understand why they make you laugh. Once again, then why has it not been discovered what aircraft? It already has been (an america west or UPS flight): http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/11/10/blogger-solved-california-missile-mystery/ This story also shows another pic from a day after the non-incident, but with a less dramatic contrail. Contrails can sometimes persist for a long time, sometimes they dissipate rather quickly depending on the conditions at the time. The timing and flight path all make sense to match it up to the contrail observed. It also matches the fact that it was a contrail being made slowly, just like a normal airplane at high altitude. No commerciel aricraft flies that way.... They fly exactly that way. They make really long contrails very slowly. A plane flying to the east at altitude would be expected to make exactly that kind of contrail. If you say so... I've lived on the coast of California for 22 years now, rightr by the airport, and have NEVER seen that kind of Contrail! Obviously many hundreds of thousands of others haven't either, or it wouldn't have been news! Below is a link to a story showing a pic of a similar contrail. The lighting, reflection all could explain why it happened to seem more dramatic than usual: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/11/09/mystery-solved-missile-launch-jet-contrail/ People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. A plane flying to the east at altitude would be expected to make exactly that kind of contrail. It is known. It was a very ordinary flight. They do leave contrails like that.
