Me thinks you're being a bit dramatic. After the vicious attacks from the left, I think you have blinders on. Should Repubs be apologetic about winning? To not support same-sex marriage is not to equated with bigotry, or homophobia. If you want to continue to argue that it is, then better get used to Repubs in control of government. And by your thinking, there are lots of hetro's that are second class citizens. Yes indeed. In my opinion, it will take a leader such as Egypt's Sadat to advocate a change. I don't think this change will be hastened by appeasement. So you think the Native tribes are silly? Seems to me they are just protecting the benefit they grant their members to those that deserve to be considered members. Too many people are too quick to conclude that those 'uncomfortable' with affirmative action because it is race based are 'narrow minded bigots'. That is an example of prejudice many liberals don't want to recognize. Much easier to dismiss them than deal with the issue. How to apply race based preferences without a definition? I don't think it is a silly question. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 3 posts on this thread and you haven't said a thing about the issue. No opinion? edit to add - How is being compelled to give DNA any different than being compelled to give fingerprints? Where is the outrage from the Islamic leadership? When happens is that the "acts" will be condemned, but there is no action to take out the group that committed the acts. Sure, I am guilty of some generalization. But don't you remember the celebration in the streets of some Muslim countries? Ever seen what goes on at the madrassas (sp?) that serve as the only schooling for so many Muslim children? Ever heard Muslim leaders preaching hate to their congregation while putting on a 'moderate' face for the western press? One notable exception was the younger generation in Iran, where large rallies in support of the US happened the day after 9/11. edit to add: Major newspapers in the Middle East and elsewhere routinely publish stories claiming the Jews torture and kill children to harvest their blood for use in holiday pastries. Palestinians read Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf, the inspiration behind the Holocaust and the Jewish conspiracy theory that teaches the world’s problems can be laid at the feet of the Jews. The children are even taught that AIDS was invented by Jews to kill Arabs. They are indoctrinated that blowing up Jews is the only way to save the world. You're attacking me for having no sense of humor! It is hard to tell if you're trying to be funny or serious. Since I now realize you were not serious, I wonder if you think that my assertion of the need to categorize people is not valid. We have been avoiding this question for too long I think. I understand how it makes those who advocate race based preferences uncomfortable, but try to deal with the question at hand, what do you really think? What is to stop anyone from claiming minority status in order to get a benefit? Native tribes have decided to do it. edit - your reply was perhaps more sarcasm than satire, and didn't strike me as funny anyway. Definitely right, we should always check for other canopies even as your own canopy is opening. I know a lot of people say to grab risers first, but I have always grabbed toggles first, I do it without needing to look for them, and I think I have greater control over the canopy just as fast as if I tried to grab risers (less force required). You might be able to identify some DNA distinctions between races, and let's say you could determine a fractional measure of their heritage. Even then you still need to decide what fraction is going to be the threshold. Some might say that the current system is OK, where people claim their own race. I think that it is not enough. Bestowing such benefits should not be on the word of the individual. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. No problem for those that do not advocate race based preferences, or affirmative action. For those that do favor such policies, I would like to hear how they propose to categorize people. I certainly do, and so do a lot of others. And they are pursued by the justice system with great vigor. I understand that judges have recently ruled that 'hit lists' must be allowed, but that is just a matter for law makers to define an acceptable law that can stand judicial/constitutional review. Such radicals are not hailed as heroes by many, however Bin Laden is. Big difference. Terry Nichols and Timothy McVeigh are certainly 'nut-bars'. But I truly hope you actually can see the difference in how they are received by our culture compared to how Bin Laden is received in his culture. Big diference. I think this is important if you are in favor of any race based preferences. Of course racial discrimination is based on what the individual racist perceives. No definition is needed for people to be racist. If Mariah Carey doesn't face bigotry because she doesn't appear obviously black, should she be denied a benefit? Self-identification is OK for many things, the census for example. There is no impact for people to define themselves for many such demographic information related purposes. But when a tangible benefit is to be applied for being a member of a certain race, it is much more important to have a concrete definition. If a person is to get a preference for college admission, or a business to get preference for government contracts, then I think it is important to have a limit/definition. Native Americans in Alaska get very tangible benefits, and define inclusion as some fraction of native blood/family tree type relationship. They apparently agree that a definition for inclusion in their race is needed. Some children of mixed race couples seem to be obviously black/white/hispanic/asian/whatever, so if the potential college student looks white, but is 1/2 black, should he be denied the preference compared to his brother that appears obviously black? Of course if might seem wrong that being just barely on one side or the other of some fractional definition would leave a person without some benefit compared to someone else that is, say, 1/32 more black/white/hispanic/asian/whatever. What about a person that is adopted, or for whatever reason can't document their families racial history? If you can't propose a definition, then I don't think you should advocate race based preferences. I did work it out, but the super poly-razmatazz theorem states that gratuitous hurling of obscure mathematical references will not impress anyone, except for yourself. My conclusion is that the county-red/blue map shows your assertion to be false, but it is easy to conclude that liberals are desparate. I understand how irritating it is for Libs to be out of power, but try not to let it get to you too much. Repubs had to deal with it for a long time, it wasn't easy. From the article: No, tell me it isn't true! Mild mannered European countries are victims of Islamic terrorism? Maybe they should look deep into their soul and reflect upon what they did to make them mad? Time to pick a side. In my opinion, war against the Western world has already been declared. The sooner we realize that, and fight this war like a real war, not just a criminal matter for the police to handle, the sooner their leaders will change to embrace peaceful ways. Indeed, the true face of Islam - not extremist, quite mainstream. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Another lousy thing about the old round reserve - the thought of a round reserve deploying without any diaper type of device does not give me a warm & fuzzy. We were too stupid to know better back then. If you feel compelled to jump with a round reserve, at least do it with a modern design, with a diaper.
