  1. He claims that the relative position of the center of pressure and the center of gravity has an effect on how fast/easy it is to turn (yaw axis). This is not true. In the video, he claims that the mantix position with the lower center of pressure makes turning faster. The mantis position makes turning faster because of the relative effectiveness (force) of the surface presented to the wind, and the distance from the CG, not at all because of the CP/CG relative position. This relative position has an effect on pitch stability, and roll stability (therefore also effects your ability to slide in any direction), but does not at all effect yaw stability. Vladimir talks like he has had some formal engineering education. He should be embarrassed. 2. This statement cannot be argued with because it is just an assertion of your opinion. This assertion, however, is very wrong. The vast majority of jumpers that started with B-12s have chosen to have step throughs on their newer rigs. 4. I sold my Swift Plus 200 (1992 vintage), with one low speed opening, 3 years ago for $350. I had first advertised it for $400. I wanted to upsize (I had actually thought it was a 175) and bought a new 225 version gathering dust on a shelf for only $550. The Swift Plus doesn't have as much resale value as PD reserves. Make sure to know whether yours was subject to the cascade bartack airworthiness directive (depends on DOM), or that it was inspected. edit: I see from your classified that the DOM is '92, so it should have been inspected, and noted on the packing card. 6. Automotive accessories purchased from the dealer are widely accepted as having incredibly high mark-ups. The only thing I wish to see is that the stainless be recognized for the same thing. Some other options/add-ons are not treated the same (my hook knife example). Part of having capitalism work is to have an educated consumer putting market forces to bear. As more people recognize stainless as way overpriced, and the mfgs become aware of this, the pricing structure might change. Again, I am benefitting from the current pricing structure, as others have said, my rig is way cheaper because so many are willing to be raped off by choosing stainless. 7. Embroidery, for example, I expect to be expensive, a lot of extra value-added labor involved. If I get a hook knife option on a rig, we know the mark-up on this option is actually very low (typically around $25 for high quality aluminum knives that sell by themselves for about $20, and that includes extra work of maybe a little pocket stiching & snap). So why is it that different 'pass thru' parts should get different treatment for the amount of mark-up? Because they can. I am not inclined to pay so much for stainless on my rig, so I benefit from the current pricing structure.
  8. Formerly working for a manufacturer, and being in the industry for a *few* years, I can tell you that the cost from the suppliers is that much higher. No one is really getting rich from Stainless upgrades. And if you think producing stainless hardware, or the raw stainless it's manufactured from is cheep, you're ill informed.Quote Anything to add? At least from the available prices shown on the DJ associates site, it seems like a HUGE markup to me. It must be a large part of their overall profit. 10. Are those prices from Para-Gear or what? Must be all the trouble of tracking what hardware to put on what rig that drives up the price of the option. 12. I was asked to open both the main and reserve. The supervisor said it was recently ordered as mandatory to do it, superceeding the TSA policy we have available. Of course I have no idea why he would make this up, besides wanting to be an asshole. If you go walking up to a plane with a rig over your shoulder, how are you going to check it when they just tell you no-you can't carry it on? Despite official policy, they reserve the right to say no. The airlines have big, clear, plastic bags to put it in, but do you want it going through the baggage system like that? 15. Thanks Eric. It is encouraging to know that the ice is likely much of my problem. All the more reason to stick with what I can already do, since it is usually icy. The whole family went Saturday, they will go without me tomorrow because I can't even breath hard without pain. I have off of work until the 4th of Jan, and I doubt that I will be well enough to ski by then. It would have been great to meet up with you there. It will happen, I just have to heal first. 16. Sounds like the work of baggage handlers instead of customs/security. There was a group that got caught a few years ago. Not nearly enough of that type of 'sting' is done by airport security. I usually wrap my luggage in packing tape after it is screened. Makes my bag look like it belongs to a poor person, and it is an immediate sign of tampering if it is cut. 17. No, I didn't take a lesson, I witnessed the crap quality of their lessons last year. 18. I was there last year when my kids took a few lessons on their boards. It was very icy, all man-made snow. I will stick to skis from now on, after I heal. Evil fucking plank! 19. Ya, I was on the bunny slope. They suck! Why would I think there is some advantage to the board? It was totally easy for me to ski because I had good ice skating skills, am able to do a good sliding/hockey stop. This transferred over to skiing great. Snowboards suck! 20. I am so stupid for thinking that I should go ahead and try one this year. I am a competent skier, and should have known to stick to that. Instead I got (probably) broken ribs. They're a bitch to even get up on, and just generally seem like a lot harder to control. Fuck them! 24. The straight poop on cypres power consumption: http://www.pcprg.com/cyprespc.htm So, consider that the unit uses about/at most around 100 times less power at 'rest' compared to when the LED is on/calibrating. Turning off the unit takes, say 10 seconds or so. So if the unit were on for 100*10=1000 seconds or about 16 minutes, then you are better to turn it off. Even with the assumptions that I haven't listed, or even if it is 1000 times less power, then it would be about 2.5 hours for the break even point. So I think it is fairly safe to make the obvious conclusion - turn it off manually even if you don't drive up/down hills on the way home. 25. For all riggers that disapprove of the use of Slinks or other, reserve TSO'd brand links for brand X reserves: Do you refuse to pack a rig that comes to you already in that condition? I think there are VERY few riggers that will not repack a rig because of this. So, riggers by their collective action are using their license to determine compatibility to outweigh any supposed requirements of reserve or cotainer mfg. That's just the way that it is....
