What can we do about Skyride?
sundevil777 replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, it was in Skydiving magazine. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am -
I dropped a couple RC guys under canopy that Kelly Farrington made before he was old enough to jump. He made a small 7 cell with spider slider connected to the PC. It was fun to drop on lousy weather hop & pop days. It did however, look just like a real malfunction, but from farther away, if it doesn't deploy. So neighbors once called in the emergency crews. Why negativity about AADs is disturbing
sundevil777 replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
I think that 13 years ago the personal risk threshold would be viewed differently. Now we have a choice to only do the more 'challenging' jumps with a modern AAD, back then we would have just done it anyway. I did not expect that from you. I know that there is no accounting for taste...but that thing is awful! People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

I don't think anyone should be coaching new free flyers without an AAD. 13 years ago we would have coached them, but I don't think it is wise now. I don't know how anyone can prove they're not dependant on it without jumping without it. So, a lot of people are dependant. Even those that admit that they do more risky jumps because of it would likely do the same jumps anyway if AADs had not advanced in the last 13 years. I thought the full length/long bags lost favor to the short bags where you had to S-fold the canopy. I believe the concern was that too much of the canopy could 'slump' down to the bottom and might cause a bag lock. Anyone else remember this? OMG, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is so COOL!

Ordinary people's reviews of the movie on Netflix are definitely lousy. Ebert and a couple of professional reviewers liked it, but I'm not convinced it is worth a try. Many people will flip over because their orientation to the horizon is so steep, or even past vertical that they give up on flying their body. You must convince your mind to ignore the orientation to the horizon, and realize that you are barely tracking relative to the air if you dive out and go past vertical. When you are able to realize that you can fly the exit like this, then you will be successful. Also, it helps if you have more confidence than is justified. I like to watch the bag lift off the container and I can turn back straight in plenty of time for opening. Much to be said for watching the progress of the opening I think. I would never want a canopy so sensitive to body position that I could not twist my shoulders the little bit it takes. The chance for a 2 out situation or entanglement must be balanced against the chance for the departing main to snag the reserve. It is not a settled issue on which is best, but I favor not cutting away. Please read; http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/dualsq.pdf and this is a decent thread dealing thoughtfully with the subject (of course my posts are the most thoughtfull : http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=598018;search_string=army;#598018 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. What can we do about Skyride?

That is why I am so surprised that the idea of listing the DZs that are affiliated with skyride is not accepted. Make it an intentional water jump, at least you won't break something while landing. Even if you're fairly light, rounds can bite you. You can likely find someone that has a closet/basement full of old stuff that would be amused to see jumped again, and not care if it gets wet. Or, make it an intentional cutaway jump. You can open real high and get a lot of quiet time under a round before chopping. Or, talk up the idea so much that someone else does it, and enjoy the experience vicariously. Sometimes it is not so wise to want to recreate the past. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Where do you wear your altimeter?
sundevil777 replied to grue's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
On the hand, but I move it nearer to the thumb than most, with only the index finger through a small loop. It is easier to read with less no hand rotation needed. It might be misleading to call it a cutaway handle, it opens up the BOC so that the left side guy can deploy the main. How about doing a better RSL shackle. They have a tendency to come apart when they shouldn't, as if the mechanism might have issues with high accelerations during actual deployments, or maybe just not reliable if not firmly/completely closed. What I would like to see put over that chart is where the cable will start to get distorted noticably... The fact that the cable bending like that can occur so much easier with mini rings would surprise most jumpers, I think. Most might know that you can expect a higher release force, but don't realize what is actually happening. I am amazed at how rare the standard rings are now. I didn't hesitate at all when ordering my new rig to stay oldschool. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Pizzas in Canada are still described in inches (diameter). The same is true of TV and monitor sizes. Tires/wheel sizes (diameter only) are still listed as inches. Don't give in to metric! What would be new is if we posted those DZs that accepted the certificates. I would have thought that such a list would be worth building up in this thread. Don't 'stab' a flare on any canopy. If you are loading it lightly, it will likely be very easy to get soft landings, they just won't look impressive. I jump a PD210 with low mileage loaded at 1.15:1, and it still does very nicely.
