  1. Who was deciding how many votes were expected for each side? How many votes beyond "expected" does it take to warrant an allegation of fraud? They didn't "project" Gore to lose either. Aren't Franklin county elections managed by Dems? I don't see how you can conclude that there was tampering by Repubs from such information. If the allegations related to the Diebold machines were true, the potential impact from such a scandal would be huge. Because of this, the dems are highly motivated to prove it true, but they cannot get past speculation. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  2. Where is the proof? Allegations are not the same as proof. I don't find Conyers' report credible, just like I don't believe Jesse Jackson when he came to Ohio and claimed that we lead the country in voter fraud schemes. However, I do believe that Ohio might lead the nation in being stupid enough to spend a lot of money on crap machines, and politicians don't like to admit such a mistake. Even if a repub doesn't believe his side is guilty of fraud, he can still work out (with the opposition) solutions to potential fraudulent practices. In fact, if I don't believe my side is guilty, then I will not have any reason to protect the availability of such practices. I think we are seeing the exact opposite in play right now. The dems oppose efforts, claiming some infringement on privacy without an effective proposal of their own. Looks like they are the ones trying to protect their votes. 3. Republican attempts to influence the vote? It is allowed for politicians to influence voters. Seriously, to what allegations are you referring? Why should fighting the fraud require acceptance that both sides participate? We will probably always have allegations of voter fraud. It is so easy to do it now, however, that it is shameful. I hear dems complain about proposals that repubs have made, but they don't advocate any alternative effective measures. Given that, why should I not conclude they want to continue to benefit from the fraud. 5. Quite right! Their machines certainly don't inspire confidence. Didn't the alleged fraud happen in counties where the elections are managed by democratic county officials? If there was fraud, I would think it most likely was to the benefit of the dems, and they are pissed off that it didn't work! 6. I read quite a bit of it before becoming completely bored - it seemed completely without substance, no better than the lies that were common after the '00 and '04 election. Conyers is a political hack, in my opinion, no surprise his report is nothing but partisan politics. The last governor race in Washington (dem fraud was all but admitted by the judge) is just as useful a discussion tool as the alleged fraud in Ohio. Paper ballots: I agree with that. Biometric tracking of voters: That would be enough if our laws allowed everyone to vote (including felons, non-citizens). Because it is so easy to register without regard to these laws, I think there should be more. 7. I think a voter ID card is a reasonable way. It appears from some court decisions that perhaps the constitution doesn't allow any new burden, so an amendment to the state or US constitution may be needed to enact such a requirement. How do you think it should be done? I think the democrats oppose efforts to reduce voter fraud because they rely on it. 8. No worry, it is so easy to presume that everyone knows a racial slur when they see it. Things like that can get one in trouble, even something innocent like asking for a fag...that could start a fight with us yanks. 12. I'm surprised nobody else has brought it up. He went absolutely ballistic! He claims that Richard Clarke is the only expert that matters, and that Clarke supports his assertions! He claims he was obsessed with Bin Laden. He was not just mistaken, or misled, he lied terribly during the interview. He just made stuff up to insult Chris Matthews and claimed it to be true, as if nobody would check! He yelled at his staff afterward for getting him in that situation. He was the one that answered one of the first questions about his 'initiative' by bringing up current events in Iraq/war on terror, so his claim that Chris Matthews didn't honor the agreement was bullshit. 14. It is not that they stay away from air transportation, they just have to accept that it is much harder to take control of a plane. Just blowing it up, however, is not more difficult because of the fact that passengers or air marshalls won't accomodate hijackers. 16. I did not mean to imply that. Only that there wouldn't be much left. A 757 is still just a single aisle plane. No bigger in diameter than a 737. 18. Those pics are useless. So, you agree that many/most of the assertions are crazy, but hold out for an explanation to the "hard ones". The fact that the conspiracy advocates put forth so many crazy ideas should make you wonder why you should believe anything they put forward. Which "hard ones" do you have trouble with. Why do people think that the structure of an airplane is such a solid object? They are designed to withstand aerodynamic forces with as little weight as possible. They do not hold up well to impacting the ground or concrete/steel buildings. 20. Quite right. Engine designers have been amazing at getting the internal combustion engine to run better (remember the good old days of carbs), be more efficient, and much cleaner all at the same time. If I really drove like a granny, I could squeeze 9.5 mpg out of my old '76 Mercury with the 460 cu.in. engine. And that was 3/4 of it being easy highway miles. The problem with cars is....they are so much fun. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 21. That stuff is just so much bullshit. The same people lying about the lack of evidence are lying about the rebuttal of their claims, and you are obviously inclined to believe them. I think that sort of loyalty only happens because you want to believe them. They are lying to you. Many, many people saw it and told their account. Have you tried Snopes.com or Urbanlegends.com. If you want to believe it is true, however, then I don't think there is anything that will be convincing. 22. If a country is harboring them, he had already said we would not distinguish... Seems perfectly reasonable. We gave them an opportunity to help us. Even if they were only guilty of negligence in not caring about the bad guys in their midst, we were making it clear we would take them out if Pakistan didn't help. Pakistan made the right choice. If only more middle eastern leaders were able to make such a choice. I think this decision is comparable to Sadat's choice to make peace with Israel. He was a reasonable guy, he was truly able to seek peace because it was in everybody's interest. 23. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Concerning the "Lie of the Century"/McCollum memo: The eight points described are not anything not already known. They were prudent steps given the imperialistic Japanese actions and war they started in China, etc. Now, if we had ambushed the Japanese fleet as they approached for the attack on Pearl Harbor, that might be more convincing. Despite the correct assessment of the Japanese intentions overall, they still were stupid enough to be caught off guard. What would have been the benefit to letting them be so successful (apart from the carriers being away) compared to ambushing them on the way? We still would have been at war with them, and would have been in a much better position to win that war more quickly. FDR and his advisors screwed up, despite the fact that they had the right intuition about the Japanese intentions. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that. One should not underestimate the ability of our leaders to be incompetent. 25. $2.08/gallon in Central Ohio. For those that have cars that are "required" to run on premium... Engines can be designed to make more power when premium (higher octane) gas is used because the the compression ratio can be higher and ignition timing can be advanced more - higher octane gas resists pre-ignition or 'pinging'. This pinging was very common in high compression engines of long ago, and people would retard the timing from normal spec until it wouldn't ping. Preignition is very bad for the engine. Modern engines prevent pinging with sensors that detect the sound and automatically adjust to eliminate it. Some automakers will require premium gas because their engines can be designed to make more power if it uses a higher octane fuel. In order to be able to advertise the higher power output, they must tell you that the higher octane fuel is required. There is usually some disclaimer in the owner's manual that admits you can use a lower grade gas if no other is available. The engine will make slightly less power because the ignition timing will adjust itself. The guys in the engine design group at Honda R&D admitted to me that there is no other reason for the premium fuel requirement. This should apply to other manufacturers.
