http://www.cypres2.com/userguide/CYPRES_2_users_guide_english.pdf Page 36 Storage temperature: +71° to -25° Celsius Working temperature: +63° to -20° Celsius * * These temperature limits do not mean the outside (ambient) temperatures but rather temperatures inside the processing unit. Therefore, these limits won't have any meaning until the processing unit itself has reached the temperatures in question. In actual fact, these limits will rarely be reached due to the mandatory location of the CYPRES in the reserve container, and the insulating properties of the processing unit pouch and parachute canopies. Quite right, there is a bunch of insulation, so a rig might have to be in a hot environment for a few hours for the Vigil to get hot enough to experience what Vigil considers rare/extreme/whatever. I wonder what Vigil did in the way of qualification testing. They should have put these things through a temp/vib/whatever profile more severe than in a car on a hot summer day in England. It can kill a kid or dog, but shouldn't be hot enough to kill an AAD. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Your Favorite Harness and Container System and Y
sundevil777 replied to MLKSKY's topic in Gear and Rigging
Thanks for helping us to realize that there is so much more good design that goes into the rig. The Infinity is gaining in popularity out here in Ohio, one big DZ has a bunch for student rigs. My rig has been fantastic. Absolutely like new after 4 years. I've never encountered a loose flap on mine or other's. When did you buy the company and put the new Infinity rig design into production? People should realize it was different. Concerning the "kink" issue: Doesn't the kink mean that there is little benefit of the hip ring junction instead of a std/no hip ring rig? I'm speaking of benefit in terms of the rig not being too stiff/limiting movement... I agree with you on that. We have no idea what spooked the passengers. Maybe the "threatening" passengers were trying to make people nervous?I wish they had some interviews with the other passengers. Quite right, they may have been wanting to get themselves in trouble, just to get publicity for Muslims being victimized. I think you're being a little harsh. I rode my street bike for only a few years and that was 20 years ago. I wouldn't consider myself to be a cycle 'wuffo'. If the 'rider' was really always on the back of the seat, then I think you're spot on. I did have a lot of experience on dirt bikes. I think that learning skills on the dirt is extremely beneficial for street riders. Dirt riding allows you to learn how to control the bike when you have lost traction/sliding, bouncing over objects, etc. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I understand you're not responding to my post, but to the original poster. I agree with you, no details given, so no ability to judge whether the decision of the flight attendants was appropriate. However, the guys were apparently later found to be no threat. I think it is wrong for gov't officials to say the passengers acted irrationally when they will not provide details of what the suspicious behavior was. That's funny. Especially with your previous "expert" advice in this thread. Do you actually ride? Or were you a 3-year 3,000mi rider? Someone who doesn't ride is better than the 3 by 3 rider. Why isn't 1000 miles a year enough? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. What would be sadder is if people are so frightened of being politically incorrect that they do nothing - that's what made 9/11 happen. I say screw political correctness, and do El Al-style interviews of ANY young Middle Eastern males before they are allowed to board a plane, especially if their name is "Mohammed". mh Now who would have guessed that would be your reaction?!? So, are you saying that he is a racist or something like that because he would like to see us apply an effective security screening system such as El Al uses? There is no right to not be offended that applies here. If the bad guys start using blue haired grannies to do their dirty work, then I'm glad that they have to go to all the trouble of trying to make that happen. If blue haired grannies were bombing planes because of some grievance they have with the free world, then I would want them to be singled out for special screening also. Do you think there are a lot of bikes that are louder than allowed by law? Is the noise law enforced? I understand that it is illegal to have your horn blaring constantly, but why should it be when the exhaust of bikes or cars can be so loud? I think the legal exhaust noise limits should be quite a bit lower, and then everyone should be allowed to have a dedicated type of horn for letting everyone else know you're there. It could be turned on for busy urban driving, and off when you don't want to wake up others. Unfortunately, I think a lot of bikers enjoy making a lot of noise in part because it pisses people off. If bikers benefit from being loud, then autos will too. Everyone for the sake of safety should have really loud exhausts. Statement concerning summer Vigil AAD usage
sundevil777 replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
Doesn't that mean that it had some problem, perhaps it needed to be sent to Germany for more extensive repair? They test the units at environmental extremes (temp/vibration), test the accuracy and resolution of the sensors, etc. If your unit was functioning correctly, it ran through its self test like usual when you had it, then the maintenance check may have found a bad component or bit of wiring that only presented itself at high temperature, for instance. This is a good argument for the need to do such complete checks. I have long argued that passing the self test is not a reliable indicator that everything is good inside. I think it is likely that someday you will be noticed by someone that does recognize it for what it is, and expresses their concern to security. If that happened, I think security would very likely require you to check it in. They would no longer care that policy allows it as carry-on, and would exercise their authority to require you to check it. If that sort of incident happens often enough, then the TSA and airlines may reconsider their policy, because they don't care much about our preference. I think this is a good example of why we should never walk on with our rig on our back/visible/not in a gear bag. One nervous passenger can cause a lot of trouble. Good reason to not mention your rig to anybody. Of course you shouldn't get thrown off the flight, you are allowed to have it, but you don't need the hassle/time delay. My memory was that Irwin was holding the kid in his arms. If Irwin had been charged and knocked down, his ability to protect the kid is quite limited. Anyway, I think your reasoning does little to mitigate what I consider to be child endangerment. Dytter Flatline? (Not 1st or 2nd warning)
sundevil777 replied to ntrprnr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
5,000 3,500 1,800 A few times I have gotten the flat line tone as the slider was coming down, only to find that the opening altitude was recorded to be 2000. I wrote L&B about this discrepancy, and their answer made no sense at all to me, just a bunch of double talk. I think the difference is that Jackson didn't make a habit of it. At least Jackson only had to rely on himself to not drop the kid. Irwin had to rely on the animals not getting TOO pissed off. A pissed off croc may just turn around and snap at you, or it might charge after you so that a couple steps back would not be enough. The latter was a very real possibility when his kid was there. I suspect that the authorities did want to prosecute him, but did not because he was popular. The Attorneys General office in the US is an elected position, so politics influences their decisions. This may also be true in other countries. Was Mullins prosecuted for endangering his kids? You imply that you think Irwin's situation compares equally in terms of severity to Mullins. What was it he did that is equal to having your kid along while intentionally pissing off a croc and expecting that a couple steps back will get you out of danger. If he had done that by himself, then I wouldn't be saying that I'm glad he died, but he did it with his kids and it wasn't going to stop. I am suprised so many think his choice to put his kids in such unusually dangerous situations was no big deal, no worse than wanting to be able to have your young kid go for a tandem jump. I think skydiving is a rather mundane activity compared to what he was doing. Skydivers don't intentionally irritate dangerous wild animals, and then expect that a couple steps away will be enough of an escape when they attack. I think comparing it to skydiving makes for a lousy analogy. Mechanical devices vs dangerous animals. We all tempt fate in many ways by driving, flying, etc. but to intentionally irritate dangerous animals as he did with his kid along is in a whole different league, in my opinion. He might as well have been running with the bulls while holding his kid in his arms. Quite different than skydiving, I think. I think that kids are much more likely to be curious about guns, and want to find and check out their parents guns if they don't have the ability to use them in an appropriate setting. When I was young, I knew exactly where my dad's guns were, but the temptation to check them out on my own simply did not exist because they were not a mystery to me. I'll admit to being beyond harsh, OK. I am glad that he died before he caused the death or serious injury of one of his kids. I say this because I think his death or serious injury due to intentionally pissing off dangerous wild animals was inevitable. Remember the South Park episode? It was only a little exaggerated. I think he would have loved for his kids to be part of the stingray scene. I think he likely would have had his kids show how they can also piss off dangerous wild animals and get away with it, or at least be right there looking on as dad did it. It could then have been his kid that got the barb in the chest. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. There was no period after the "it" in my post. I said... "I'm glad he got it before his kids suffered because of his ambition and arrogance." There is a difference. I think his kids would likely have been injured or killed from his poor judgement. After the croc incident with his kid - instead of apologizing and promising to never do it again, he was absolutely confident in his ability to tempt fate. He was wrong. He was constantly flirting with disaster, that is what got people to watch his show. It is terrible for his family, but remember how he had his tiny young kid with him during a croc scene? It created a little controversy for the endangerment, I thought it was outrageous. I suspect he would have continued to include his kids on the show to boost ratings. It sounds harsh, but I'm glad he got it before his kids suffered because of his ambition and arrogance. I always thought he was irritating. You didn't serenade anyone! I was 5 feet from you and couldn't hear anything, only knew you were being silly because you were singing to yourself. Why is this Christine not a candidate? Is she unattractive, married...? I agree that using the dog as a chick magnet requires that there aren't a lot of other dogs around. I think women should be required to provide an external indication of their availability. I think the old tradition in Hawaii was for girls do it with a flower either on the left or right ear. You've got to be bold! Have more confidence than is justified (I say that about a lot of things). Something funny that can't be misinterpreted but doesn't sound like a 'line', such as, "I have to confess that I can't take my eyes off of you, and if you don't find me too repulsive, I'd like to go out with you tonight." Statement concerning summer Vigil AAD usage
sundevil777 replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
If you leave it turned off, then leave it outside to cool back to ambient before turning it on, you should be fine. If only we knew how long it takes a unit that is insulated (buried inside the rig) takes to heat up/cool down, but we don't, so it is all a guess. Statement concerning summer Vigil AAD usage
sundevil777 replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
All depends on how hot it gets and for how long. The trunk will not be as hot as the passenger compartment. Since Vigil's advice is so vague, it is useless except to warn you that their device is vulnerable. You would think that testing their design at temperatures should have already been done. No wonder some DZs are grounding them. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.
