Re: [stemartin72] Triple Fatality - Ludovic Woerth
ianyapxw replied to base283's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We're largely on the same page. I'm also not talking specifically about any of these guys, as I don't know them myself. Cheers -
Money. I'm not saying it's a right reason, I'm just saying it's some people's reason. Also, bear in mind that if your chance of dying is 1 in 100,000, but not having an AAD doubles that, it's still a pretty low chance, enough for people to take the odds.
-
I'm not passing judgement, but why don't you jump with one (legitimately curious). Would you jump if you had an AAD for free?

What took me so long to do this?
ianyapxw replied to love2drop's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You really shouldn't continue. Things like flapping plastic bags and strong wind against your face will stop you from working too At this rate you're gonna get fired. -
Why wouldn't you play blackjack in a place with auto-card shuffling? It's still the same chance (of losing) if I'm not wrong Professional gamblers usually play poker, I don't think there's any other game you can win without cheating or extreme discipline.
-
I'm curious you mentioned "in the past", why hasn't something like that been implemented (I'm honestly curious, not being condescending). I do know discussions here can get quite heated. Do you think DZ.com members would be the kind to abuse such a button?
-
No right, it means the spammers will have to write a different set of code. I assume they are re-using the code again and again, and have it set to auto-post once registration is done, then forgetting about the account.

I can tell for certain you can't tell if iFly Singapore is on from the entrance doors. I was initially puzzled by your post, thinking you were talking about construction noise.
-
I don't know where you got the idea of blackjack but lots of casinos use card shuffling machines, making it impossible to count. To OP all the best in your journey! Have fun

I know this guy is a new account making first post on a controversial topic but he raises many valid points Why would you even believe this? How does trying a tandem change the fact that money encourages people to push limits? I don't even know what's up for discussion, sure money doesn't push everyone but no one can sensibly deny money pushes some people to do things they would not, whether it's in business, religion or sport. -

it is a triple fatality. go read the other thread that was locked due to un-educated post like the first post here. If YOU go read the other post... the title was changed to "Double Fatality" by the 10th post. Anyway, IMO this whole thread should be deleted by a mod. You are an idiot. You should read the whole post. You know where it says that they pulled Brian off life support. It would appear to be the case that it was originally entitled "Double Fatality" and when Brian passed: one of the moderators changed it to Triple. Simple out of sequence, different threads, postings and not being on here for a few days. Let's refrain from the personal attacks. Let's read all the info before making post that make us look like idiots. Enough. +1, you're the better man. Respect. -

We also have to remember that some of these people who go in are among the best and brightest in the sport. Someone in the incidents thread compared this to low pull contests. While I see a lot of flaws in the comparison, there is a certain element of truth as people are pushed to do something more dangerous to be 'better'. -

So what do you think, do you think people like us are to blame because we also consume (and sometimes demand) such videos to be produced? -
Well I wasn't a skydiver when I came to this site though I have to say I conducted myself very differently from OP.
-
Thanks for the explanation. Since 2 outs are getting more rare, do you think it makes sense to have a reserve so small still and risk getting badly injured when landing, or do you think reserves should be larger? Also, is a 2 out so likely that container manufacturers make such small containers?
-
Sorry, I'm quite lost. Are we actually seeing an increase in "two-outs" especially since your post indicates AADs have gotten better and better.
-
Not true, things like AAD also work in weird scenarios like the guy who got into a spin on his wingsuit and couldn't deploy his reserve, saw the vid on youtube but not sure how to find it again. Having a small reserve, while not ideal, still helps in certain scenarios, like if you crash into trees or wake up under canopy, it's no excuse not to have a reserve. What I don't understand is why containers are made such that your reserve and main both must be under 100 sq ft. Why not make a container that can have both a high performance canopy and a student size reserve. Maybe a rigger can weigh in?

"Crowdsourcing" the dz.com BS detector
ianyapxw replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You forgot to add that we see a ton of trolls, hence our healthy scepticism. Remember the guy who asked a ton of questions in "General Skydiving Discussions" like "How did you get into skydiving" and "How do you know when to pull" but only used his account for 3 days. Or guys blatantly engaged in drug running? If you wanna troll someone go troll r/skydiving, they actually seem to fall for it -
Where did the trend come from, where containers are manufactured such that reserve and mains are similar size. This leads to pretty high wing loadings on certain containers that house high performance canopies. How come container manufacturers didn't like have a standard size for the reserve and design the containers around that?

I mean there's obviously a lot more that needs to be examined in your data. How many jumpers does Australia have vs US and how many jumps can you do (given you can jump year round). How many of these deaths are directly related to a noob using a camera or related to that (eg, snag, low pull cause distracted, etc...)

Newbie from India hoping to pursue skydiving
ianyapxw replied to shrik14's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No worries. My former boss was from Philippines so I know things can be difficult. Your best, best bet is migrating overseas using your degree, and skydiving as a hobby. How good/bad India is as a place, only you can decide. Hope everything works out -
Of all the bad April Fool's jokes on this site, this is the only one that got me

I can't help you with regards to visas but I know that there's a Working Holiday Visa for Australia. One way to get your foot in the skydiving industry is to start with small jobs (video editing, mow the lawn, trash) then start to pack for jumps as you build jump numbers and get your rating. There are a TON of downsides to working in the industry but hey I get that certain countries are really horrible to work in too, make your choices well: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4610977;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread This too: https://www.skydivenagambie.com/learn-to-skydive/jump-start.html That's all I can help you with. All the best! (:
