Season finally started; Couple of pics from last weekend.

You do go work. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video -
PC105. Not even 6 months old and now its considered so old that it doesn't make your list. Go figure. $649 new and kicks ass. Still available if you look around. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

That sounds really pricey! You can buy a brand spanking new PC-105 (which I jump and love) for $649 on eBay. Then you'll need charger, wide angle lens etc but you'll still be WAY under your budget. Just for grins I just checked eBay: check it out Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I never reuse miniDV tapes. I have found that trying to re-record on a used tape can a "venetian blind" effect. That is, the old scene shows thru the newly recorded material in alternating horizontal bands. That was with a Sony PC-1 so perhaps the newer models are better about this but I'm not willing to take the risk. Besides, this way you have an archive of everything you've video'd Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

S-video is an analog source. You should be capturing via a firewire port (IEEE 1394). Yeah, AVI's are big. About 3.6 MB per second. Quote I DO have a capture card but the quality of the video is junk even when I use the s-video input. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I jumped a PC-1 in a Sidewinder for 4 years. I finally dropped and broke my PC-1. Bought a PC-105. A couple of hours with a Dremmel tool and and L bracket and my PC-105 fits like a champ. Its a pain having the lanc port on the right side but it fits great. The main problem is that the PC-1 is much taller than the PC-105 so you need to move the mounting bracket up. Be glad to upload photos if you like. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Another solution to the labelling problem is to buy printable DVD disks. The Epson R200 will print directly onto your DVD disks. I found the R200 at Staples today for $99. Two drawbacks: 1). You have to buy PRINTABLE DVD disks, they cost about 50 cents more than regular DVD disks. Staples and Best Buy don't carry printable disks yet so you have to mail order them. About $1.50 per disk. 2). The printer takes SIX color cartridges at $13/each. The sales dude said it would print about 350 disks before needing new cartridges which comes out to about 20 cents/disk (if he's correct). According the to ng I was following, the quality is excellent (I have NO experience with it so far). Food for thought. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I've read the same thing about cd/dvd labels. However, I've been using them for CD and DVD with no problem. I use a system called CD STOMPER. It was like $19 at Sam's Club and includes a slick little gizmo which centers the labels perfectly every time. It includes software as well. Has worked fine for me so far. Here's a way to internally mount your CamEye. You have to tear open your CamEye to do this. One downside, feet can turn it off in freefall during donuts. See photos Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

No, you don't have to render for the transition to show up on the timeline. To get the transistion to the timeline, just drag it there. You will have to render the transition in order to see the dissolve effect when you play the timeline. Can you even get the transistion to show up on the timeline? See attached jpeg. Note the red bar at the top indicating the need to render that portion of the timeline. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

You can see a video of Chad Wilcox's camera helmet going in. Go to skydivingmovies.com. Then go to the miscellaneous section and look for i_lost_my_helmet_july_7_2002.wmv I hate when that happens! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Check out the attached photos. The mounting bracket is molded in to the body of the 105. Believe me, it hurt to deface a brand spanking new PC105 but the bracket stuck out about 1/4 inch. No way to get it in my Sidewinder Helmet. If you remove the two screws shown, the metal brackets are still unable to be removed. The sacrifices we make to make skydiving videos. I actually took a dremmel tool to my brand new PC-105 to remove the strap bracket. I had no choice. It was the only way it would fit in my SideWinder helmet. I'm sure my warranty is toast. Hey, you gotta live dangerously! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Use TIMELINE/RENDER WORK AREA. The work area is the yellow bar at the top of the timeline. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

What do you mean by 'the transitions won't work'? Are you seeing a red X iin the upper left corner of the monitor during the transistion? If so, you need to render first. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Weird question (PPT presentation to DVD)
docjohn replied to EricTheRed's topic in Photography and Video
There is a cool program I have downloaded and played with called CAMTASIA. It will capture anything on your PC monitor screen and create an AVI file from it. http://www.techsmith.com/products/studio/ Free download. It should be able to turn your PPT prsentation into an AVI for you. Then make your DVD Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video -

Sky Diving after Tyroid Surgery?
docjohn replied to LGreg34's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
After surgical removal of part of your thyroid gland, you could develop hypothyroidism (depending on how much is removed). Your surgeon will probably have thyroid function testing on you in 1 to 3 months. The symptoms develop slowly and passing out is not a common feature of hypothyroidism. It can cause fatigue and edema (swelling) if uncontrolled but not loss of conciousness. If you do develop hypothyroidism, your doctor will prescribe a daily dose of thyroid hormone which you will take forever. The bottom line is, its easy to control, you should be able to do anything you did before surgery. So my advice is, wait the 2 weeks to recover from surgery and get back in the air. Be sure to have thyroid function tests every few months. Now, to make my lawyer happy, here's my "for the record" advice: no, don't skydive. Even if you have a normal thyroid gland, don't skydive. It's too dangerous and you will die. I would never recommend that anyone skydive, ever. So there. John Musgrave MD D-13182 Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video -

You CAN put your video on a 650 mb CD. I've been doing it for the past couple of years with tandem videos. The problem is, if you keep it in AVI format, you can't store more than about 2.5 minutes of footage on a disk. I convert it to WMV format using Premiere. (EXPORT TIMELINE/ADVANCED WINDOWS MEDIA/VIDEO FOR BROADBAND 2 mbps). A 5 minute video takes around 100 mb. You view it on your computer using Windows Media Player. The quality is excellent. I've been giving my tandem customers a CD with their tandem video in WMV format plus 20 to 30 still jpeg images (plus a VHS tape). Ah, but this year: DVD! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Ok, I got too technical and didn't answer your question. Step by step: 1). Capture video from camera to hard drive (AVI files) 2). Use Premiere to edit your video. When you're done, select EXPORT TIMELINE TO MOVIE. This will create a new AVI file (you still haven't compressed it just yet). 3). At this point you could dump it back to your camcorder without any compression. 4). To burn your DVD (Sonic MyDVD, Ulead, etc), selec the AVI you just created. It will then be converted to an MPEG2 (but will show up on the DVD as a VOB file). Hope this helps Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
-
There is no compression when creating an AVI file. AVI files are about 3.6 megs per second or 200 megs per minute. Since DVD disks can hold 4.7 gigs of data, you can only fit about 20 minutes of AVI footage on a DVD disk. To create a DVD with more than 20 minutes of footage, you need compression. When you create a DVD using a program like Sonic MyDVD or ULEAD DVD, your avi files are converted to MPEG2 with compression This way you can get about an hour of footage on a single DVD (or longer if you use more compression). If you examine the file structure of a DVD, you'll find files with the extension VOB. Those are actually MPEG2 files. (you can copy VOB files from a DVD disk to your hard drive, change the file extension from VOB to MPEG and then view them using Windows Explorer). There's a wealth of information regarding video files and DVD at: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

You can deinterlace from Premiere without going to photoshop. When you EXPORT STILL FRAME (CONTROL-SHIFT-M) click on SETTINGS. Then select SPECIAL PROCESSING (on the pull down menu). Then click MODIFY. You'll find a deinterlace check box as well a a NOISE REDUCTION box. The problem is that the image still won't look as good as the image in the monitor window. This sounds dumb, but here's what I do: instead of using EXPORT STILL FRAME, I enlarge the monitor window to the maximum, screen capture by pressing the PRINT SCREEN button, run WINDOWS PAINT and paste your image by pressing CONTROL-V. The resulting image will looks MUCH better than your exported image. You'll have to crop the image but the improvement in quality is worth it. Try it and compare the quality to a Premiere exported still image. Its a lot of work but if you want a higher quality still image, do it. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video
