It's food for thought but I thinks its many years away from being practical because: 1). At 3.6 MB per second (AVI file), a 2 gig memory stick would store about 10 minutes of video. 2). the 1 gig memory stick is currently $350. Compare to a $5 miniDV tape which holds around 13 gigs of AVI files (60 minutes). Then again, my first 20 MB hard drive cost $500. Today a 160 GB hard drive costs $200, which is the equivalent of 8,000 20MB drives which would have cost $4,000,000. So when 2Gig memory sticks are $10, I'll scrap my miniDV tapes forever. I really like the PC105. The two downsides are: 1). A/V output cable is non-standard. (weird D-plug) 2). Lanc port is on the right side (against the helmet). You have to plug in the CamEye and then bolt on the camera. Other than that, its a great camera. You can still find new ones for around $700. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

I use the remote control. In fact, I bought a spare on eBay for $20. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Looks like Inez to me. Oh yeah, I filmed that dive! Too bad we have to be so bogged down in liability issues. She had a blast! Thanks for taking her. If she had died, she'd have died happy. Then, here comes the family with their lawyer, yada yada. Sucks, doesn't it! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

In this age of medical/legal liability, do you really expect a physician to condone skydiving to anyone? Gimme a break! Good luck finding a physician who will put down on paper that it is OK for anyone at any age to skydive. If anything happens (heart attack, stroke, etc), it'll be his ass! Why would he stick his neck out so someone can make a jump? Sorry to be so paranoid but it comes with the job. That's why they call me "doc". Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

compressing DV footage for the web...
docjohn replied to mountainman's topic in Photography and Video
The quickest way to create a WMV file. Premiere can do it much faster than creating Quicktime MOV files (at least on my system). Export Timeline>Advanced Windows Media>Video for broadband NTSC (256 Kbps) Plus you can select a higher Kbps value if you want a higher quality (but larger) file. Skydiving, tandem jumping especially got some nice publicity this morning on the MSNBC website. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4980771/ I'd like to see much more of this! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Works on Power DVD 4.0 Just press C to capture. By default, it will save the images as bitmaps (BMP files as opposed to jpegs which I mentioned erroneously in a previous post). Power DVD doesn't say anthing when you press C but it places the BMP files in your MY DOCUMENTS/MY PICTURES directory by default. I pressed the C key about 10 times thinking that nothing happened. I later found the files and realized that it had worked. Try it. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Well, that's an interesting slant on the situation. I guess I could have just pointed and looked scared. Lord knows what he'd have thought I was trying to say. I'd sure have felt like shit if something had entangled with the trailing ripcord. Slim chance? Probably. Anyway, my judgement call was to take action and 'interfere'. But I respect your opinion. And that's what this forum is for. Anyone else think I did the TI wrong? Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Get a copy of Power DVD. Pressing C during playback will capture the current frame to a jpeg file Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

After filming 500+ tandems, I figured I was bullet proof. I recently filmed a video, sat up and filmed their deployment until they disappeared into the sun, then dumped because I knew the spot was long. I pulled a good 5 seconds after they did. Sure enough, while I'm stowing my slider, a snivelling tandem goes whizzing past me, missing me by what looked like less than 50 feet. I really thought I was going to watch a tandem cutaway but it was just a mean sniveller. Do I track after a tandem dive? I do now! Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

What you're looking for is a DVD authoring program. Sonic MyDVD does a quick and dirty job and comes free with many DVD burners. You can download ULEAD or buy the full version for $39. Lots more features than Sonic MyDVD but still very user friendly. Whatever you use, you're going to have to climb the learning curve. Jeez, must I do everything! Pack, video, edit, fetch floating ripcord handle for tandem master. A cameraman's work is never done. Watch Video If the above link doesn't work, go to skydivingmovies.com, check out the MALFUNCTIONS section and look for floating_ripcord.wmv So where's my beer? Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

This is an excellent thread and worth reviving. My contribution is this: put the phone # of the DZ at the beginning and end of the video. Its a great way to generate new tandems and your DZ owner will definitely appreciate it. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Thanks! I searched the web for hours. I guess you need to know where to look! Thanks again. Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Anyone know where to buy a spare a/v cable for a Sony PC105? It not the standard mini plug type cable. It has a weird D-shaped plug which branches out into RCA jacks and an S-video jack. The PC105 manual doesn't call it anything other than an a/v cable. I need a spare. Searched everywhere. Need it for quick video dumps to a VCR. Any ideas? Doc http://www.manifestmaster.com/video

Back in the 'old days', jumping a ProTec with a home made mount with a Minota 7000 and Sony Handy Cam, I was really picky about which canopies I used for doing camera work. I would never jump anything zero-P because I figured a hard opening would: a) kill me b) make me wish I were dead. So I jumped only F-111 canopies like Raven, PD 9 cells, etc. Now, jumping with tiny Sony digital camcorders, who cares what canopy you use. I guess I don't understand the question. I think canopy selection for camera work is a non-issue these days. But to answer your question: Stiletto 150, Sabre 17 0 (yeah, yeah, big stuff for us old farts)..
