Michael... I'm in full agreement w/ you. The post started out to thank God. It was not an invitation to a religous debate. There is a difference between honest discussion where learning is involved & a pushy debate where neither side really ever hears what the other is saying. Even if I don't agree much w/ SadSue, in her post responding to Chute... she pointed out the "throw the first stone..." issue - that is so true & it is sad how quickly so many are ready to throw the stone, when the real need is to look inside yourself & work through things their first. There is no way anyone is going to show someone else the way to their "thruth" by going on some long demanding diatriable on how incorrect they are. The person/nationality/race/religon is rare that has not trampled on the rights of another. It is about finding where your peace can come from & learning to focus & live life off of that peace. YES, YES!! If only more could adopt this way of thinking & allow idiots to merge onto the freeway... the whole world would be a much better place. But, even religous people are told to be "teachable". No matter what the basis of any book is... there's something to be learned from it. My family is extreemly Christian & I grew up encouraged to read on & understand, atheasim, evolution, buddhism, islam, judiasm, facism, socialism... & all the other isms. After all, if you just blindly follow & don't know why, you are as bad off as the person you are judging. Chute - you & people like you are the reason people have a bad vision of religon. Basically, the New Testiment says to go to heaven (ie. be saved), you need to do 2 things. 1) believe in God & Jesus as the Son of God & 2) do unto others as you would have done to yourself. That's it pure & simple. There are many other rules & guidelins that expand on those basic 2 principals. The entire Old Testiment is an expansion on #2 & #1 is backed by the Bible. It is personal choice (given by God) to believe what you want to believe & to act out how you believe. Almost all of the major world religons are based on the same premise w/ many of the same rules. There have been zealots in every religous/non-religous grouping throughout histort that make their particular group look bad. Their actions reflect poorly on the actual basis of their religon. Those people read one sentance in their book & take it to the extreem. Before you can do anything, the whole pic needs to be evaluated. For instance, women being silent in the church was a rule set because of a letter by one of the appostles to one particular church. This church was in a town where before "God" women in the temples were whores. Therefore even in the Christian church they were being whores... so the apostle told them to be silent & no longer follow the old ways. Modern religon gave this a broad application & all of a sudden, women's right to speak in church were taken away. Religon is everything - even the non religon of Buddhism, is a religon. It is a fact that religous people control the earth. It can be a comfort & a sword. No matter what you believe or who you do or don't believe in it will affect you. oh, BTW... it was never said that you HAVE to go to church. It was suggested that inorder to help you act in a Christlike manner, to be friends w/ other like minded people - it is more easily facilitated to have a weekly meeting. The Christian religon is based on the fact that you can & should have your own personal relationship w/ you God & savior - use the Bible as a building block to base the relationship on, not necessairly to hide w/in its walls. In an area that is over 90% desert religon almost omes from the land. As Freakydiver referred to, religon is free & many people need some kind of crutch to stand on (I am one of them). How can we be in this world all alone, how can no one be "in control" type thinking. There are very few true Babalonians & Palastinans left, most have turned to the Muslim faith. The Jewish tribe, after finding their God, became Hebrew. When Abram had a child by Sarai their names changed to Abraham & Sarah, the "H" means the breath of God - Hebrew is ruach - the Holy Spirit. It is about land, but it is about dividing the land between 2 faiths that both lay claim to the the "Land of Milk & Honey" Both have 2 legs to stand on. I, have chosen Christianity as my faith.... I guess I ate the mushrooms too . However, when compairing all 3 religons various books... there are way too many similarities. But when, you expect a people (Mulsims & other more radical sects of many religons) that take being seperate from the world very seriously - reasons for their being "centuries behind" & ask them to put aside their faith & live in a "civilized" world... one where you have to TOLLERATE others... war is the only answer in their mind. It is the Palastinians/Babalyonia's that become muslim - the people that in the Old Testiment worshiped Baal & 1000 other gods. It is the Palastinians that want "their" land back. The Jewish tribe settled down shortly after Abraham & Sarah (see my eariler post), it the area that is now know as Isreal. Many many times they were kicked out, dragged away & simply over ruled. From Pharoe, Cesar, the Byzantines & the Crusades - the Hebrew faith was spread accross the world because of this. While they were away from their "home" the gentiles (Palastine/Babalonians) would move in. It is this that causes the fighting & why it will not cease. In the old city walls of Jerusalem, there are 3 faiths living rather peacefully together, Hebrew, Christian & Muslim - rather than fighting for complete control... learning to live together in peace is a better answer. The fighting will never end. One fairly accped story from the Bible is that Abraham as the father of the Jewish kingdom - which eventually gave birth to Christianity - was promised by God that his childrens children would be as numerous as the grains of sand and the stars in the sky. Well, after about 100 years his wife Sarah hadn't had a child. So she told Abram (his name @ the time) to have a child by way of her Non-Jewish slave woman named Hagar. Hagar had a son named Ishmael. Eventually Abram & Sari (her name @ the time) kicked Hagar & her son out into the wilderness of Palastine. Hagar prayed to her god & was promised that she would have the same blessing bestowed upon her son that God had promised Abram. When Abraham & Sarah finally had a son - both were well over 100 years old - they named him Issac. From there the story of the Abraham being told to sacrafice his only son .... So, now there are 2 sons of Abraham, Ishmael & Issac, one Jewish, one Palistinan - both have the same promise to have their lineage rule the earth & their numbers being as many as the stars in the sky & the grains of sand. The theory is that Issac's - obviously - is the Judeo/Christian world & Ishmael's is the Muslem. There are MANY times in world histroy when the 2 have clashed. And of the few times when a difference in the relationship could have been made; the staunchly ridig church of the time forbid any kind of bending. Thus we are left w/ a world conflict that will not go away. We all chose our own destiny, but our choices are limited by those that went before. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear.
