  1. I use Adam's AV's for slider up, non-terminal BASE jumps. I just don't have slider down oscillation problems and don't really see a need for vents on the shit I jump slider off, and terminal jumps I figure If my track is so bad that a vented PC will make a difference, then I deserve what I get.
  2. just shoot the best video you can. The key is maintaining control of the footage you shoot and who views it. If you're going to sell it, I'd be very careful about burning sites by including recognizable objects etc. As a paranoid aside, I'd also turn the date/time function on your cameras off before filming any illegal BASE jumps, just in case it's ever seen by the man.
  3. smart enough to not name sites, to be sure. Thanks for playing.
  4. Remember that these altitudes (the way I understand it) are accounting for the burble the unit sits in on your back, so if your back is seeing clean air ie, a long snivel or a stand up, it will fire somewhat higher--somewhere around ~1000ft agl. correct me if I'm wrong.
  5. yes I did. Even if I started BASE when I had 50 (or 5000) jumps...I'd feel the same way in hindsight.
  6. Interesting thoughts, however, I don't think that these are really reasons one should use to make a decision whether or not to leave the slider on the canopy. The slider is designed to slow the opening of the canopy. If it is not used for that purpose, IMHO, it should be removed. (For similar reasons, I don't leave my tailgate in for slider up jumps) My .02 Mark I agree. I wish there was a way to take off the slider between opening and landing... In some (rare) instances, I will tie my slider down for a jump or two. But mostly, I prefer to have it out of the way for shallower delay jumps. I like to hook my BASE canopy. I have had a slider affect the front riser performance of my canopy pretty dramatically, and don't want it to happen again. I realize rigging errors happen--but in short, if you're not comfortable re-configuring your own BASE gear, you have no business jumping from anything other than an airplane. Rigging is an extremely important part of this sport--and it is this reason that I think one should have 4-500 skydives (generally) before they begin real BASE jumping. BASE is not a weekend warrior type of sport--there is no 'part-time' BASE jumper...you're either in or your out. Those that get into the sport that just want to make "a jump now and then" are incidents waiting to happen. I can't emphasize enough: BASE and skydiving are two totally different sports--you will die if you don't respect that fact. /rant

    Bustet

You're not caught 'till you're caught. I run, fly, drive, or whatever else I can do until they tackle me and haul my ass to jail.
  8. QuoteWas considering putting this in the Wingsuit forum but it's not really a wingsuit, but a rigid wing, and it is general skydiving news, much as I'm loathe to promoting Felix as he seems to do a good enough job of it himself. admittedly, a cool stunt. As for Felix, what a self-aggrandizing homo.

    Toggle out

This is incorrect. Most all BASE folks who have had multiple experiences landing after a blown/lost toggle agree that one can get better (more controllable, softer, more consistent) landings flaring with one rear riser and one toggle. Throwing the second toggle away is a natural reaction, sort of. However, a little practice with one toggle and one riser will quickly get much better results both flying/steering the canopy and flaring on landing. I used to make a habit of blowing out brake settings doing deep (4+ second) slider-down deployments, so I ended up landing alot with missing brakes. I can do either way, but given the chance will always going with riser and toggle, no question. A day at the DZ with a BASE canopy will help to simulate this, though this will be slider-up and the mechanics slider-down are somewhat different. The best way to do this would be to find a nice, tall object, jump it slider-down, throw away one brake, and fly in and land with brake and toggle. Repeat on the other side. Voila! Ready for action. For what it's worth, if one is landing with both rear risers the very common mistake made with BASE canopies is to flare TOO early and TOO hard. Rear risers are more subtle than toggles, and collapse much more of the canopy, much faster. Wait a second longer than you think, and don't crank too hard on the risers - better to come in with NO flare at all than to backstall and land with a collapsed canopy, going backwards (I broke an ankle doing this once, and learned the hard way). yes. Although you don't really have to throw the other toggle to simulate. It's a wierd flare to be sure. the toggle hand digs at least twice as deep as the riser hand, and you have to do it without initiating a turn. Practice it, you'll get used to it soon enough.
  10. There's been talk in an unnamed city in the Pacific NW (PDX) of putting a wingsuit on some poor sap, tying him into a harness, taking a pickup truck up to 100mph or so, and unreeling the wingsuited test dummy from the truckbed like a psychotic kite. Fortunately, nobody's actually gotten around to doing this yet. It'd be damned cool. . . until the first highway overpass. Not to mention, how do you reel the kite back in? Questions, questions. . . Peace, D-d0g I actually have been considering a similar scenario for my next bridge trip, y'know, those long, lonely stretches of highway... there will be video.
  11. technically, the picture belongs to the photographer. I agree it's not cool to post it w/o your permission, but I wouldn't make any threats you can't follow through on... .02
  12. Does anyone know where the "Copy Inhibit" message comes from? When I try to copy parts of different DVD's onto my mini DV camera, I get this "Copy Inhibit" message on the camera. Does this come from my camera or from the DVD itself? Anyone know a way around it? I'm using a standard Sony DVD player, NOT a DVD-ROM drive on a computer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  13. Dude--are you crazy? There's only one thing you CAN do in all good conscience. You must travel through Mordor to cast the evil ring in to the fires of Mt. Doom from whence it came. And while you're there, I've been scoping the Northwest face of Mt. Doom, looks well overhung and probably about 2500'. Also, if you stop by the Wizard's place (the White, evil one) it looks like he has a tower there that's AT LEAST 1500'. I've heard from good sources that the wizard's tower has been jumped before though, so no first descent there--(Gandalf the Gay) I'm not sure it actually counted as a BASE jump, though. (I'd like to see you exile ME to the top of your tower you evil wizard dude!) Barring that, I actually run a ring disposal service, and seeing how you're a BASE jumper and all, I'll waive my normal nominal service charge, and give you a FREEBIE! Just PM me for the details.
  14. You'd be surprised how fat and lazy most of us are. who have YOU been hanging out with?
  15. no doubt. all this stuff is available elsewhere on the net...
  16. http://www.nodoze.net/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=190 there is some useful info on this site if you know anyone interested in slightly deviant practices. edit: apparently you now have to PAY for this info...sorry... fucking capitalist pigs!
  17. Have fun with it guys...count me out. Hey, just theorizing. We've come up with the pros of this concept / device. Now I'd like to hear the cons. That is, reasons why this wouldn't work, as opposed to just, "My feet are coated... coated in chocolate." What? Not quite following the chocolate thang, but I don't see what's wrong with break cord. When it comes to gear, I am a huge proponent of keeping it as simple as possible. Using break cord for a s/l jump falls into this category (I personally don't like s/l jumps at all). IMHO, the bridle itself, as one's sole means of survival from launch to extraction, should be as clean, strong and simple as possible. Just the thought of pin bartacks or shrivel flap connections breaking while the rig is packed sends a cold shiver up the spine...having what looks like a much more complex system attached to the bridle [such as the ones drawn] increases the likleyhood of failure. It seems to me that the more holes a needle puts in my bridle, the weaker my bridle will be, ultimately. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Again, I don't even like s/l jumps, but that's just me.
  18. Have fun with it guys...count me out.
  19. heard this at a drop zone this w/e: Apparently, this western US DZ was severely winded out--~40mph winds or so...so, the way I heard the story, this einstein decides to throw on his BASE rig and do a pull-off of flat ground with a 42" PC. He succeded, and for his efforts was awarded a ride to the hospital courtesy of the local ambulance. relative wind? relative to WHAT?
  20. It's not about getting someone in trouble for something the've already jumped...It's about maintaing access to an object that is or could be jumped, and protecting those who will be jumping it from getting busted. In addition, by not site naming, you have the added perk of not letting some darwin candidate burn your site by digging a hole in the ground with his body there. (And yes, I can think of at least one example where footage has gotten a jumper busted after the fact, as well. So again, in short, it's just not a good idea.
  21. Problem's already out of hand. Just shouldn't happen.
  22. Just a reminder to all in this forum: Naming names does not just refer to site names--it refers to PEOPLE'S names, as well!! Why do you think you keep seeing descriptions such as 'that sheep lovin kiwi' or that tattooed aussie, etc... I've said it before and I'll say it again... THE NPS AND OTHER AGENCIES MONITOR THIS AND OTHER SITES LOOKING FOR INFORMATION TO PUT ME IN JAIL AND YOU TOO, IF YOU MAKE ILLEGAL JUMPS. This is only a "virtual' BASE jump. Given a choice between a cyber jump and the real thing, I'll take the real thing. So don't fuck it up for other people by letting the cat out of the bag. Again--Tom, if you see my real name mentioned in any post, please edit without prejudice. thanks everyone.
  23. I think it also has to do with ownership. The way I understand it, The highway department owns the top of the bridge, and someone else owns the steel structure. The 'someone else' doesn't like BASE and has made it illegal to even step on the structure beneath. This is why it's illegal to jump from the steel. .02
  24. I'll give 'em 5 weeks. I've found first hand and many times second hand that when your BASE jumping scares your significant other, one of two things happen. The relationship ends, or the BASE jumping ends. I guess the outcome of my ex-situation is obvious. A good post by Tom--however, how much experience does your dude have? Hopefully enough Skydiving experience to know when to back off. Make sure he knows that he doesn't ever have to jump, and no-one will look down on him if he doesn't.
