  1. Oh, I'd be glad to hear about you sources. If you think that all the translations that have been done after the KJV (or before that!) are in fact a) false/altered/wrong and b) have a copyright, you must have familiarized those over 100 000 versions (or parts) of the Bible - some of them gone forever. I haven't, but it's nice that you have. Most of the churches I know (I have to admit that they are Nordic ones), renew the language of the bible every now and then. No, the idea is not to change the meaning - the idea is to keep it comprehensible. To tell the truth, I'm not sure about the copyright issues. I don't see, however, your point about the it, thought. The KJV does not have a copyright more likely because such concept DID NOT exist when it was first published. Your view of this matter is somewhat narrow, at least so it seems to me...
  2. Again... it's the t-r-a-n-s-l-a-t-i-o-n you are talking about. Btw. In Finnish, you cannot distinguish gender from the pronoun form. She/he = hän, her/his = hänen etc. So, you can see that the whole gender issue is cultural/language-bound. If you think that God is bound by these same limitations, well... When you are defining God "male", because English happens to use male pronoun form when talking about "him", you are in fact creating a false god. Do you believe he's got a beard, too?
  3. The King James version 1611 is not more true than any other version of Bible. It was compiled by a group of theologians by the authorization of the King James I (that's how it got its name). I'm not denying that the language in this particular version is very beautiful - that is, of course, if you are into 17th century poetry and prose. One has to, however, recognize that the version was done by committee of experts and it was more or less translated and published for the King, nobel men, King's court etc. When it was first published, the lexicon used contained high number of loanwords from French and Latin (see to whom it was written). Example (from the original version) (St. Paul's Letter to the Corinthians (1611) Ch. 13) (Italics added) charity is clearly a loanword from Latin charitas (=love). There was, almost 100 years earlier, an English version of the Bible (Tyndale's New Testament Worms edition, 1526) that used the term love in the same passage. Worms edition was a translation for ordinary men (townsmen, craftsmen, shopkeepers etc.) and was probably a lot more understandable for the ordinary people than the version 1611 (even after that version was published). As you clearly can see, the writing conventions have changed, also there were numerous conventions used at that time (e.g. letter v). So, first of all, you cannot really say that you follow the original version, since you clearly do not. Secondly, stating that King James version of Bible could be better, closer to the word of God, or indeed the true word of God is hypocrisy. It was, after all, translated in the name of the King (James I). The translation of that time did not take into account some of the earliest Christian texts but was collected mainly through late Latin and/or early French sources. I find it very irritating, when I come across people, who actually argue that this particular version is the "only real version". Also, none of the characters mentioned in the Bible spoke English (or French). Most of them did not even speak Latin (apart from the later characters). So if you want to find yourself the true word of God, try something a bit older and NOT in English (did you know that there is no such thing as perfect translation - in fact whenever something is translated, the message ALWAYS changes a bit? (semantics etc.)) People are speaking about "true, living faith/religion" and at the same time they are quoting an almost 400 year old, yet altered (writing conventions), piece of text and actually believing this text is somehow more true/holy than some other ones. Quotes such: The earth is the Lord's,and the fullness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein No man taketh my life from me, but I lay it down of myself*** are not part of living language. (Or is this someone's vernacular language? I don't think so!) Language is changing all the time - the translations should follow. The ideas should be easily understandable and readable. Although, like earlier mentioned, the language is in the 1611 version (verses-wise (if you're in to poetry) etc.) is very beautiful. However, if you want people to study and learn more about the bible, this version should not be the first one for them to read. Most of the Bible translations into other languages than English are NOT based on this particular translation (or on English). 1611 is just one of many translations - there is no ultimate real translation of the Bible (like there is no one true church either).
  4. Outs... I didn't have time to read the whole thread. A question for those 45% (or so) who answered that "they could not live without him/her". Would you kill yourself then, or what? I mean, I love my wife soooo much. In fact people still think that we have just met since, well I guess it just shows even quite far... However, since I'm a serious Finn and I take everything so literary, I could not answer option "could not live without". I probably could - it would be very sad, but I probably could. My uncle lost two (2) wives (he was a widower for eight years in between) he loved very much. He is still living - I really cannot say how happily, but he is... So those of you who said "could not live without", please explain.
  5. I must love my typing since I reply to my own message... Seriously though... Someone mentioned that word marriage should be left for religious (church) purposes only. Well, it's only matter of time before some of the (christian) churches will solemnize a marriage between 2 men / 2 women. So who decides which religious groups can use that term? Also, someone said that it can not / has not be(en) studied, how gay couples manages to foster their children. Well, I'm actually pretty sure it has been studied and I can even try to find some sociological journals with studies concerning it - of course the results would not necessarily please those opposing gay families...
  6. Do you know the difference between anecdotal and empirical evidence? Guess what, your statement is as empty as vacuum.
  7. Yes, but everyone would think that you flap your arms, jump and run around the yard chirping, when you tell people that you are a skydiver. So THAT's it! Are you afraid that by telling someone you are married, that someone might think you are gay... Talking about homophobia...
  8. Siblings having sex may lead to pregnancy with developmental disorders. Gaysex can not. Sounds like prior restraint to me. What if they don't want children? Even if they don't want, the possibility is there. Someone talked about cousins etc. In Finland you may marry your first cousin. (Sure there is the danger of developmental disorders, but due the history and geography of Finland, you may if you wish (or rather, you don't have an alternative).
  9. Wow... Deep... And straight people do not have anal sex because ____________.
  10. Probably an old one... Dialogue (in English) (Bonfires are often lit during the midsummer festifal) a: Gather the bonfire! b: You mean the whole bonfire? a: Yep, the whole bonfire! And same in Finnish: a: Kokoo kokko! b: Koko kokkoko? a: Koko kokko!

    Patriotism

... Is it just me (and the fact that English is my L2)... Ok... So, according to you, a) women should/should not speak in the house of Lord. (Also, some people believe that in more general terms this means women should not be educated) Yes/No? b) women should wear a veil. Yes/No? c) having a divorce is possible. Yes/No? Oh... And if you answer either Yes or No and you add some BUTs, why cannot people add BUTs to different parts of the bible as well?

    Patriotism

Same goes for you... Would you please explain what "let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law, and if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for woman to speak in the church." 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 "And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head...If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head" 1 Corrinthians 11:3-6 "...Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery." Mark 10:11-12 ... and big number of parts in the bible mean? People read the bible (and other religious texts) in different ways. You know, that's ok - as long as it does NOT interfier with the rights of others.

    216 000 $

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/02/10/finland.speeding.reut/index.html
  15. I think it's that way everywhere in Europe, at least... After 999 million comes... 1 milliard, after 999 milliard comes... 1 billion, thus 1 billion in US is only 1/1000 billion in Europe.
  16. I'm speechless... The new TV game is... "We have 99 "guilty as hell" guys over here and one unlucky son of a b***, who we just randomly picked out from the street. How fast can you kill them?"
  17. Is this true? Interesting... To where are they moved? (overseas - but where?)

    216 000 $

Twohundred sixteenthousand dollars! The new speeding ticket record! A Finnish business man received that ticket last week. Just heard in the radio this morning. Once I get links etc., I'll post them. Some background: The Finnish traffic fines are based on true income of a given person (if that person speeds 20 km/h over the limit). The officers will automatically check any given persons true (net) income via mobile phone and the phone will automatically calculate the fine (income vs. the speed). Officers cannot change this figure themselves. For sure, this guy is going to appeal to court. The figure will most likely change, but I'll bet that guy ends up paying quite a bit...
  19. If you grow up around it that doesnt magically override the fact that at 13 years old you are still a kid. At 13 you arent physically, mentally, or emotionally mature which IMO are all important factors in your ability to make life and death decisions and appreciate the consequences. Anyone that would let their 13 year old jump solo is suffering from severaly questionable judgement How about 15?
  20. "Connection Refused". Repeatedly. Over several days... What was it all about? Works fine for me... Probably the server was crowded when you attempted to contact it. Just my guess...
  21. No, I did not say such thing! You were quoting b1jercat...
  22. If you believe that, all children should be banned from watching the news, reality programs, many video games, music videos, movies etc. Very well said!
  23. Are you suggesting that all threads concerning "guns" should be considered "reposts", and therefore be removed from the forum, i.e. censorship? If so, would you apply this same principle to all other types of threads which are posted with repetition? I guess I shouldn't be surprised that those who would deny citizens their 2nd Amendment rights, also don't mind depriving them of their 1st Amendment rights either. No, I'm no suggesting that. To be honest - if you really feel that you can contribute something new - time after time - to these long gun threads, I'm happy for you, really! IMHO, sometimes I feel that when someone is posting yet another anti/pro-thread (or other similar controversial subject that has been re-introduced x times) the "other side" is genuinely afraid/apprehensive that this post could actually turn some innocent people (people who have not yet made their minds about what to think of that particular issue - I seriously doubt that those people exist ) to "the dark side"... Have a nice weekend.' 6 days and counting!!!
  24. LOL! I hear you! I went trough S/L-training and those line twists were more like rule, especially since our club has a (ok... help me out here; d-bag is attached to the static line) system...
