A bit of a side note, or rather a question (for anyone, not just for Deuce). I'm thinking of buying HC-42. I haven't had a chance to see the manual yet, so... I hear HC-42 has very few manual controls. E.g. focus is set through the touchscreen menu. So the question for any HC users (I guess it's the same with 2x and 3x -series): Once you set the focus manually, do you need to re-set it every time you turn off the power? (I just don't want to go trough the pain of setting it over and over again)? Also, someone said that the "mountain" setting works just fine - is so? Jaakko

Thanks for the info - I will definetly read that book. Have you read Bill Bryson's "The Short History of Nearly Everything"? I'm sure you'd like it! Jaakko

I hear you... So - how do you explain the difference b/w different numbers (per 100 000) in the different statistics... (see my first message http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1454325;#1454325) and the one used here (UN). There are just sooo many variables and different methods of reporting crime from one nation to another that it is fairly easy to come up with quite the opposite statistics - neither one wrong; they just measure different things... E.g. Some of the laws here in Finland that might (ok, the thing is, I'm not too familiar with e.g. Russian or American law system) contribute a lot in the sense of having "misleading" data. 1) Home violence is always investigated and thus counted in. E.g. I hear some disturbing sounds from the next flat - I call the police, they go and investigate ; they find a married couple but the woman doesn't want to press charges (intimidation might play a part). No can do - the law states that the police need to investigate and if there is ground for it, press charges. Quite a bit of the recorded violence is that origin... How is it in the US? 2) It is possible to rape your wife... You are happily married, things go bad, your wife doesn't want to give you any, you use "your husbandly right" - your wife can press charges... etc. etc. etc. PS. How did you like Finland? Did you feel unsecure in the suburbs of our capital?

Bbbbbbbbhhhuuuuullllsssshhiitt.... Excuse me... That is probably the all time low of this whole "same old people arguing about same old shit" -thread. Soo... I guess, because we (Finland) have such a small population, also e.g. our birth rate is higher, since "each birth counts more" . A little hint for you: saying that some parts of the study are reliable while others are not is also... Tsadaa... BS! Oh, and if you want to belief that Finland has one of the highest crime rates of the world, because "the study said so" - be my guest. I assure you, that you are way off though.... You are welcome to visit Finland - I'll be your free tour guide!

I used a differend source (e.g. had not England, but the Great Britain etc.). These numbers are from a Finnish statistic pages (www.stat.fi) and are based on: World Bank: Atlas 2003; World Bank: World Development Indicators 2004; The International Institute for Strategic Studies: The Military Balance 2003·2004; IMD: The World Competitiveness Yearbook 2004; Eurostat yearbook 2003...) Murders, violent crimes and armed robberies known to the police (per 100 000 persons): 1999; 2000; 2001 The US - ; 485.1 ; 472.7 The N-Z - ; - ; - Dom. Rep. - ; - ; - Finland 82.2 ; - ; - The G-B - ; 198.2 ; 214.3 - = no data available source: http://www.stat.fi/tup/maanum/17_julkinen_sektori.xls I'd say things haven't changed that much here in Finland during the last 5 years or so - it depends on how the statistics are collected. Eg. there are no universal codes of collecting data and labeling them...

It's a never exceed chart that reads 1.0 + .1 / 100 jumps up to a 2.0 maximum for 1000+. Foot notes include manufacturer's maximums may be lower, -.1 per 2000 feet of density altitude, and -.2 for canopies under 150 square feet. So, to jump Sabre (1) 135 square feet with 1.3 WL would require 500 jumps (if jumping at the sea level)?

I guess you just have to find your own "trick". Some people have suggested that you should make small steps, one by one, at the time. For me, it was quite the opposite. I tried to make those small steps while I was a student - DID NOT WORK FOR ME... As I wrote, It's quite personal, so figure out yourself. So what worked for me? See, what happened when I tried that "small steps" approach was that I always ended up waiting for "better winds", or "the next load", or "didn't feel just right", or, or, or, or... (x1000). You can always make up excuses (at least that's what I did) - I ended up not jumping for a month; I just hung around at the DZ and came up ever more lame excuses. What did I do then? I made the decision! One day I just woke up, decided "today I'll go to the DZ, sign up for the first available [student] load and just do it [sponsored by Nike]". And so I did. I went to the DZ, signed up right away (before talking to anyone, before anything else), got the student gear, met the instructor, geared up, and JUMPED. The fear I felt was almost intolerable, but I did it - and did it again, and again, and again and after 10-15 more jumps, I was not sooo freaked out anymore. Today, I love those butterflies in my stomach...

Diagram of Skydiving Body Positions
jaaska replied to BenGriffiths's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There was a nice chart on the Skydiving -magazine. March issue, I believe... -
http://dimm.wdcb.ru/public/KLMN_14_02/112_1227.html Is that thing for pointing the wind direction??? I'll be damned if somebody can't see it!

I was thinking the same story myself... Dynamic stall is a bitch...

Is your Boss Tracking you through your Cell Phone?
jaaska replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
When operators introduced this service, there was a short news clip about a 9 year old boy who is diabetic - the parents used to call him many times a day to check if he was ok. (which of course annoyed the young lad). He was very happy about the new service - this way his parents could see whether he was at his friends place or somewhere where he might be alone (a park etc. -> thus knowing whether they should make a check up call or not) -

It of course depends on where you are. If you're downtown or some other high populated area (thus with more base stations) the accuracy is better than in rural areas - I know the 112 (911 of Finland) uses it. You can also opt for a service where you give permission for your friend/family to know where you are (SMS: where's jaaska - and the reply message tells it down to street number). -
Ask almost any Finn and they'll reply... ...you guessed it. SAUNA!

And that's why I used words "almost" and "most". Like you said it yourself - very few really fall in the category of "simply don't, or won't get it". Of course, most students give up skydiving themeselves - no matter whether they could get their licence or not. (Only about 8-10% of all students get their C-licences here in Finland [A and B are considered to be on student status])

IMHO most people can become skydivers. I've heard of people whom have been put back to S/L after 70-100 jumps - and they still continued and have thousands of jumps now. Some people get into the sport faster than anything - others might have to struggle for years - and if they just keep on pushing, they'll make it, eventually! I had some problems at first, when I started skydiving. In fact, I even wrote about it here (some 1,5 years ago). I got answers such "Skydiving is not for everyone" / "Maybe skydiving is not for you" etc. Had I followed those remarks, I would not be here now. Skydiving is almost for everyone - if you hang in there long enough and you really want it!

I would not say it's gay. However, I think it's stupid to pay double the prize for same stuff just because it says "Baileys" before the "cream" part...

Ok... I see were you stand - not that it makes ANY sense to me, but I see where you stand.

On on... Aivan selkeesti ilmat on keväiset. Tänäänkään ei satanut kuin metri lunta - ja vielä Turussa (eihän täällä yleensä oo lunta ollenkaan, edes jouluna)... No pääsee varusmieskurssi hyppään talvisäässä huomenna...

Oh... I hope this is a joke or something... Please, tell me that you are just having a good time and that's the reason you're writing such BS. I've been trying to understand and all, but clearly we see everything (not just religion) just in fundamentally different way that there is really no point of starting to argue about e.g. the role of English language in the world... Did you know that there are quite a few languages that come before English if you start to count what languages people speak as their mother tongue? English is not DIVINE language, trust me...
-
ARE YOU SERIOUS? You just excluded around billion non-English speaking Christian people from having a chance of "knowing the true word of god". If you want to study bible, learn other languages and study some of the more "original" ones. The Finnish Bible is based on German version (translation was done around 1530, so some 100 years before the KJV) - are you seriously telling me that "my Bible is better than yours"? What if some old scriptures were found in a desert and they were authenticated (don't ask me how, I suppose the same way the KJV) to be some missing parts of the Bible... What then?
-
Because some guy with a colar on his neck tells you so? And some guy with a colar on his neck told him...and so on. Either that, or just remove the copyright and have the "crown" approve of it? So, if I write my own version of the bible and claim that I was god's instrument, would you believe me? Want to start a religion? Doesn't that happen every day?
