Just to add on. Those small tail deflections on a lightly wingloaded canopy, would cause poor (possibly breaking) landings in a slow speed situation. And yes, i'm a local blowhole, tread lightly. J.Neas
-
One of the main points to landing any cross braced design canopy is the tail deflection. On 21 celled it's around 11.25% and 27 celled around 8.7%. These compared to conventional 9 celled canopies that deflect around 20%. This factor contributes to longer swoops becuase of the less air resistance while landing. This also means that if you find yourself too low, or making a foolish mistake, the less deflection means that the canopy will not pull you out of a bad situation as easily, hence the greater skill required to fly them. The cross bracing that leads to this more stable design, also allows the top skin and bottom skin to be closer together, making a 'thinner' canopy than conventionals, thus creating less wind resistance. There are other factors, but these tend to make or break. In the end though, it all comes down to the canopy pilot. Weaker pilots will downsize quickly to compensate for the fact they can not fully use the potential of their current canopy. Strong pilots can swoop a spectre 170 halfway down a football field (because they can!). These factory teams that use very small cross braced canopies in a variety of situations have mastered technique and equipment, and are the leading people to ask these questions to, along with those designing them. To just grab the advice of the local blowhole is (relitavely) foolish becuase it is your life in the end. J.Neas

Tandem Instructors: Helmets?
jeremyneas replied to Hooknswoop's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
1. Tandem Instructors, do you wear a helmet on tandem jumps? YES 2. Why or why not? THE EAR STORY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION A YEAR AGO, AND IT'S DZ POLICY 3. If yes, what type of helmet? FRAP HAT 4. Do you have your passenger wear a helmet? IN THE WINTER YES, SUMMER NO 5. Why or why not? THE FRAP ACTS MORE AS A COMFORT THING IN THE COLD WINTER. UNLESS THERE WERE HARSH CIRCUMSTANCES, I DON'T SEE IT PROTECTING MUCH; IN THE SUMMER IT IS BEST TO LET THEM 'FEEL' THE SKYDIVE MORE. I'VE HAD NO PROBLEMS COMMUNICATING WITH OR WITHOUT A STUDENT HELMETED. 6. If yes, what type? IF I'M WEARIN A FRAP, THEY ARE. 7. Have you changed your helmet policy for tandems? 8. If yes, how? YES, MY FIRST YEAR I DID NOT WEAR A HELMET, THEN I GOT STRONG RATED AND GOT SCARED. THAT EAR STORY STILL FREAKS ME OUT. I BRING A PROTRACK WITH ME ALSO AND STUDENTS LOVE TO HEAR SPECIFICLY HOW FAST WE WENT AND ALL THAT OTHER INFO...FRAPPER IS GOOD TO CARRY THAT ALSO. 9. What rigs are you rated on? SIGMA/VECTOR2, STRONG, ECLIPSE 10. How many tandem jumps do you have? 400+ J.Neas -
She was here in Colorado Springs earlier this year, me and my wife went to see her show at Apolooza. Strobes and paint and a tub full of water...but no massage. J.Neas

I had it done on my '96 J-1 with an aftermarket BOC. Even so, my local M.Rigger measured and made on the spot. It isn't complicated (to them, I'd fuck it up). J.Neas

Tandem masters only need a third class medical certificate. Renew Every three years if your under 40. Renew Every two years if your over 40. First classers renew every 6 months, second classers renew every year. J.Neas

Colorado DZ's have seen alot of animosity over their history. Too much competition and trash talking between them. But lately, 2 DZ's, Denver Skydivers in Brush and Mile Hi Skydiving Center in Longmont have been pushing Tandem business between one another when factors didn't allow them to jump (weather, aircraft, etc...). This is an absolutely positive step in the right direction, and has created a good vibe around the DZ's. Promoting Esprit De Corps around the community can only lead to better things. Keep it up Colorado J.Neas

hey freaky, you should also post this in the base forum, they would be the experts ;) see you this weekend J.Neas

Ok Casie, Your an educated person so you get to do the officer thing. 3 ways... 1st Academy...too old, 2nd ROTC...already did college...finally OTS (Officer Training School). You have to see a specific recruiter about it. It's not like joining as an enlisted puke, you can't sign the paperwork and be in basic a few days later. You have to put an application in almost a year in advance...and then it has to be approved. Got an engineering degree?!? If you do your chances are good. No? Then less than 50%. Your app gets to go through about a half a dozen boards and is either yea'd or nea'd. Call any recruiter to get the officer recruiters number. Your starting a little late, and probably won't have a highly promotable career so don't expect to retire anything above an O-5 (which isn't to say an O-5 is bad). Oh, and if anyone asks you why you joined the military...the wrong answer is "my career went into the crapper". See ya, J.Neas

This is actually the third or forth thread about it... but asked and answered. J.Neas

Actually, I think it has something to do with the first time you put a major load on new lines. You want them all to set evenly. Lines, the attachment points on the parachute, and so on. In reality, I have just heard this from a number of experienced riggers and maybe it's old school, but it doesn't hurt to do it. Once again, I have no idea of the validity of it. J.Neas
-
Don't need the money. But if I won I'd probably get a big ol one and give it to the student that started AFF and hasn't missed a weekend since then. J.Neas
-
I agree with Thighman, I have always heard that you need to "set the lines" on a brand new canopy. So on your first jump take it subterminal and throw as stable as possible for a clean deployment. I am not a rigger, nor do i make parachutes, so it would be best to contact your parachute manufacturer. I have never heard of a 10-15 jump break in period, just one jump. J.Neas

Gonna make my first bird jump this weekend, and have already gone through the jump-course. Question is, how many people died or have been seriously hurt since the conception of "Bird-Man" in 1999? What were the reasons? J.Neas
-
Maybe, I don't know for sure, you'd have to call PD or talk to an older skydiver (I started in 1996). But 1993 sounds about when they started making stilettos. J.Neas

does that mean your a country mile off...if i'm right?

I'm not so disturbed anymore, nice pic Jeremy

OMG, i know all of you haven't taken economics. but doesn't this ring a bell to those who did? C + I + G + Nx = GDP democrates like to push G while republicans like to push C, hence this is why we have tax cuts from republicans Ok, here's the plain and juicey: Give money to people. Can't give it to all. Give money to the people that will mostlikely blow it, and NOT invest it. OK give it to the people with children. They need more crap, single people will MOST LIKELY invest it. OK, I got my $400, what to do? Need gas. Buy gas. Is gas taxed?!? Guy who ownes gas station, needs to replenish his gas and the snickers you bought. Does that get taxed also? What about the guy that pumped it? Does he get a paycheck becuase you brought more business? Doesn't his paycheck get taxed? Look more people need gas, gotta hire more people. Isn't there more taxes there? Don't i have to hire more people for to meet the demand? OK so C (Consumer Spending, 60% of entire GDP) goes UP UP UP And more people are employed...oh yeah and since they are employed they get to buy crap too. Is that taxed? And the government gets many moneys back in taxes in the end. THIS IS GOOD FOR ECONOMY! GDP goes up therefore standard of living in USA goes up. Happy days. Jeremy Neas Later I'll talk about the democratic plan

Is it just me, or is page 16 just disturbing to everyone? Hahahahaha, Jeremy
