Gust to 25 when it's blowing 20 is ok (or even 30/25). But gust to 25 when it's blowing like 10 or 15? No way. It's that big shift that'll get you. Not the steady breeze. I look at the steady wind and base that relative to forward drive and canopy size. But I look at the gust 'minus' the steady wind for safety's sake. ... 10 pounds in 10 days on Atkins, but didn't really need to. I did it as support for the wife. But I've always responded quickly to high protein low carb meal plans. Everybody has a different metabolism. So it's more important to do 2 things: Fitness and diet (not dieting, but control what you eat) Fitness: strength, cardio and flexibility - all three, don't short one. Exercise is even known to moderate your appetite as you body will learn to be more efficient (I think fitness is most important and diet is more flexible) Diet: Find the right combination of foods that let you maintain what you want. If it's Atkins, great - Lucky me, that's the one for my system. If it's South Beach, great. But it needs to be custom to you. I know some people that are polar opposite to me. They do great on high carbs and low fat/protein. Some are complete fruit/veggie types. etc. I takes some exploration, so you guys need to be committed. With Atkins, if you are high activity, be prepared to be tired at first. It seems to me that the Atkins menu is a good subsistance start and then carbs to supplement for people with higher activity and metabolisms, but I'm just guessing here. Good luck - ... Jib - This is even worse, judging an individual by the actions of his past and how they relate make sense anyway. But judging an individual about an -institution's- past is not just. Now if any of these cops were specifically involved in the previous cases, that would make sense to look and see if it relates. But then it should only be applied to that person, and not extended to the others. But as you said, even that can be unlawful in some cases (Lawrocket? want to confirm?) Anyone know anything on those lines? Were any of the cops involved reported to have a history being associated with these types of cases? Note - I saw the vid. The cops were doing their jobs well in my mind. Extremely well. ... Still, it's about the individuals, not the class or generalization of groups. Else you are doing a terrible injustice to the cops involved by lumping them into a 'group'. ... True, all settlements are justified and no settlement has ever been made for political or PR reasons. It's really nice to be in a society where frivolous lawsuits never happen. It seems some here want to discuss the actions of about an individual. But you are continuing to try and generalize this into a race issue. This is a very common attitude that causes more damage to the situation that was intended to address. I've always considered liberals to have good intentions and be very well meaning (and to cause more damage as a result). ... You're lucky to have a group with natural timing. Sounds great. I was using your example as more of tips for the newer RW workers. Our otter usually leaves around November. So Cessna jumping is the snow activity here and is associated with bit of pickup 4-way instead of the regular teams. Also, we mix it up even during the season to spread the learning to the newbies. That usually means I do a lot of coaching - especially when jumping Cessnas. So taking a count from the V can be taken here as advice for the newer guys to help them get it more consistently. ... Clint - I bet you find your meeker is consistently steep. With the count from the student position, the crotch sometimes gets pulled off as it can be difficult to time his exit even with the right foot pushing off. Take the count from the guy in the crotch (V) and you'll likely get a cleaner more consistent exit. Also, all grips can be in place on a Cessna meeker. Far hang holds on with right hand and takes the leg right away. Student holds on with left hand and takes far hang's leg right away. Never had an issue. Edit: Most anything can be launched from a Cessna 182 step, and a no step plane can be treated much like an Otter exit. The nice thing about a big step, is that you are already in the airstream and it's easier to place yourself on the hill - most all are easier than from an Otter. There is more room as everyone is out already. The rules on the Airspeed articles on this site still apply, though. With those, you can launch anything. Timing and presentation. ... Another nice mental state is to work in terms of halves for level issues. If you are 6 feet high, shoot for 3 feet not the whole 6 feet. If you're only 12 inches off level, split the difference and only think of a 6 inch adjustment. This makes a lot more sense when you're working level adjustments of inches instead of feet (and when you have 4 people all compensating), but the thought process still applies even when learning. I think it's great that you are 'aggressive' at this stage, you'll learn faster than being tentative. But, if you plan to really crank it up, make sure you are working with someone who's pretty good. You want someone skilled enough so you don't accidently bump noggins too hard. Only doing a fallrate drill with a coach is well worth the effort and it's fun. That was a good point above too. You need a truck and some luck to find a duck. Or just a good restaurant. (I never even thought about the rhyme, I was just throwing in a non-sequitor, to see who has that type of humor. It could just as easily been a lizard or a chicken for example. Sorry to throw you for a loop, unless you are inviting me to be creative here, if so, then I missed the opportunity.) ... Funny quote above from C-USA - I've seen only positive encouragement from everyone to a new jumper (no one is taking the bait, this is a great new jumper support thread). The only 'my way or highway' comments were in the first three responses and all were FF. And with only 500 jumps, Canuck hasn't had the oportunity yet to get really good in more than a couple disciplines. Yeah, swooping is fun too. But not for a newbie. Still, I'd recommend the full blown RW suit - don't get anything half-assed unless you want to fly half assed. RW even starting needs the right suit or you'll have bad habits to break a couple thousand jumps down the road. FF is more about total body awareness and control, but you can still work your way into it with loose clothes, etc. and get some suit really fine tuned when you get the skills you only get from a few hundred jumps. Luckily for CrW, jeans or running tights, long sleeved t or sweatshirt, nice gloves you already have. Again, be safe, get 'competent' on your belly and back before moving to the more vertical components. You'll learn faster. ... Sanity from SB. And shame on all you close minded wonders. A good skydiver can do a little bit of everything. It really stinks to see a freeflyer flail about in a simple RW jump. It also really stinks to see an RW-only type not even be able to stick a simple sit or stable headdown. Or either refusing to learn or try the other discipline That's the worst. Get both, even if you get a used RW suit. You need to be a least a little decent at RW. They really do feed each other. And FF includes both belly and back to earth moves in addition to vertical. You can also Freefly in just plain loose clothes. So why purchase either if not both? Also, a FF suit is much easier to make yourself than an RW suit. The only thing I'd recommend avoiding is buying a "sit suit" - some are still out there and it's a crutch and whoever is selling you one is just trying to dump a poor investment on you. Best to learn without, go with jeans and an XXXL sweatshirt if you need the assist. And again, the "Darkside" is CrW. Freeflying is just another form of flying as fun as it is. You guys are about 20 years too late to claim that title. And 4-way RW absolutely kicks butt if you are even a little bit competitive and driven. In other words, you don't have to choose, you can do it all. ... ??You mean everyone start at the same time and launch the formation into the relative wind?? I can see why that would be a bad learning experience. What I mean here is you can get anything out of even a simulator if that's your goal. (Even with the edge effects, non-(quasi)infinite boundaries, baffling from person(s) off level, etc......) Still, great supplemental tool. Still, I'd rather practice exits off the plane and the basics in the tunnel. Still having a hard time with the boundary effects for piece practice and anything bigger than 3..... ...
