Growing up our tiny, fairly christian, Iowa town of 3000 people, hosted a refugee family from Laos (it was like the 70's or so). It took maybe a month or two before this really nice family became a strong contributing member of the community. A little understanding and kindness goes a long way. it makes it personal, people do integrate better when they are part of society. we learn more about each other. we evolve faster. We understand the real cost (and benefit). Charity that is face to face is much more effective (for both giver and receiver) and doesn't generate the resentment that anonymous charity and entitlements that federal programs try to push I give a LOT of credit and credibility to people that would volunteer to help personally - much more than those that just blithely state "the government should do this". There's a lot of smug and self righteous talking....I like the do-ers of course, IMO ...
