nonsense, if we filled up that dying lane and everybody merged at the merge point instead of earlier - then the assholes CAN'T pass - they'd all have to wait their turn ... not "in front of" but "past the final merge opportunity" - that's where the limiting pathway is. but I agree with you - it's a mass flow calculation ... Damm I wish people would learn that! Never merge before the person in front of you. Merge exactly one vehicle behind the person in front of you. agreed - early mergers 'think' they are being courteous so I'm not torqued at them, just frustrated they don't see the logic. But it would also be nice to see people use all the pavement and at the merge point at the end courteously allow alternating cars in (courteous try to get into the alternating sequence) you're using all the available pavement for longer, so everyone moves faster conservation of mass, professor - you're just moving the same choke point downstream an insignificant distance, so everyone moves the same. The benefit is getting people away from the on ramp and into a place where it's easier to merge and let's the ramp have a bit more margin to transient loading. ... Finally "no open carry" at some businesses

Depending on the issue you'd see different people on different sides of a spectrum. Those conservatives who have "leave me alone" attitude towards guns are going to extreme "we want laws established to secure our pet peeves" when gays are asking fro the same "leave me alone" for marriage cases, or when pro-choice people asking for "leave me alone" in abortion cases. Pretty heavy concept - "people have different opinions" I'm floored by the depth of discourse now and need to take a few philosophy courses to keep up. OK, you just tried and failed to repeat back to me the same statement, but still managed to stereotype into a political bias with your "conservatives" in the post - thus completely missing the point Even an attempt to agree with the above you still can't see the irony in your partisan posting or do you not get that most people want to be left alone by the government and prefer others to be left alone by the gov as well - partisan hacks from both camps are the real enemy - your liberal/conservative labels don't really matter because they don't mean anything other than which social crowd individuals want to label themselves I bet the majority of opinions on every single individual issue here aligns with "get the gov out of my hair" (with a couple of ridiculous individuals excepted, but they likely pose here as nutbag morons for the fun of it). Just because the mix is different from topic to topic and person to person, most people want to just live their lives, and let others live theirs. Strong political parties are antithetical to this as their role is the exercise of power/control - not protecting the individual. So rooting for one party or the other is a nice piece of pointless busy work and distracts the weak minded from what's really important ... absolutely - keeping an outdated law on the books would be touted as stereotype of what 'conservative' policy - so allowing affirmative action to continue is supporting conservative values - much like opposing Soc Security reform is a conservative position therefore, moving forward into a new change paradigm - liberals must support your position that "AA has done all it can do and now is counterproductive to letting EO law do it's thing" ... trying not to offend the locals is a stupid argument for the gunsight issue a vendor making deviations to a contract ordered piece part is what is wrong - nothing more, nothing less the vendor let his politics (I lump religion into politics) drive him to an idiotic business decision - I'd hesitate to use him again - it would be like buying supplies from a vendor that is vehemently opposed to the war and is also a bit fanatical about it - he also could sabotage his product because "he just feels its necessary" I have zero respect for either version of vendor - the real one, or the hypothesized one ... For the most part, yes. nonsense - there is more diversity within large land masses than between Actually,....scratch that. I find my impressions of people has less to do with them, and more to do with their response to me. Perhaps you are more courteous to the Euros you've met than you typically treat Americans as you were a visitor in their country or they were a visitor in your country. People are pretty much the same everywhere if you treat them all decently. ... It is extremely ironic when you consider that it is exactly what conservatives do. Abortion and gay marriage issues come in mind right away. Before it was integration, interracial marriage, sodomy laws and so on. Every time those conservatives basically sided up with "I don't like something = it should be outlawed by government". Then it gets ironic when they start whining when others use exactly the same approach on them when their loved guns are on stake. it's not ironic when you take out partisan references the behavior is exhibited by both sides on certain topics - I would say grouping people by "we want laws established to secure our pet peeves" vs "leave me alone" is probably a better way to divide the political spectrum so in that realm, I'd group the anti-gun crowd in with the anti-abortioners a lot faster than I'd divide them along liberal vs conservative lines I think the irony here is really on you in this case (that should spin up just about everybody) ... Machiavellian much? She was never a US citizen per the rules. The mitigating factor is that is through no fault of her own. IMO - in the review "process" she should get special consideration in that she would have been easily able to become a US citizen during that interval had the mistake not been made. Her actions in that time testify to the fact that she would have done so. nowhere in here, though, does it say that she was a good or a terrible faux-citizen during the last couple decades............... Edit: wow, 3rd to respond in kind. I'm getting slow on the draw. ... So your argument is that in response to these folks' mistaken 911 call, the police should shoot their dog and arrest everyone? My point is simply that the people we trust with police powers need to exercise restraint and good judgment at all times. It is clear that this particular officer failed miserably at that. Suppose she had missed the dog and killed a child? Would you still be playing cheerleader for her? of course, the law is the law, and if the local government wants the penalty for abuse of 911 to be "shoot their dog" (or here on DZ.com "shoot they're dog") then so be it Local statute #3.b.12 - "any family member not in control of their dog is to be shot on site and on sight" - so YAY for the "young, female, cop" for shooting the little child - that's good police work you went over the top with the last two sentences - you almost hooked me in again - it was close frankly, I think you're biased against female police officers - why do want to bias these jobs to only 230 pound 6'4" Irish white males. Do you hate diversity? have a good night - I'm going to the climbing gym ... perhaps you assess the student and decide, based on their personality, which approach is best for them - will they be motivated to try harder if you use the word "FAIL"? or will it discourage them? One size never fits all (and yes, this statement contains it's own irony). I suspect it's closer to a 50/50 split than you might think if the comments on the topic from last time are an indicator. On the other hand, those that will motivate from the 'tell it like it is' approach likely already take a 'repeat' or 'extension' or 'retrain' or 'refocus' internally as a FAIL without the instructor using the word. So I'd avoid that tack as a generic position unless convinced otherwise. But for that group, they would be better served by speaking to them in their comfort zone rather than forcing them into yours. There really are people out there that don't obsess over semantics and when confronted by those that do get very frustrated. Then you do them a disservice by (to them) mincing words - regardless of your good intentions. Personally, if it were me (way back then) I'd like this approach - "Hey, that was fun, sorry, but we have to go up again and work on (or even do better) a couple specific things." But then first go over everything that went right the first time. Then retrain/emphasize how to do the rest correctly while minimizing what specifically went wrong so the student doesn't practice the wrong thing in their mind - instead just practice it correctly and answer their questions honestly. But, if they ask directly, here's a very likely scenario: "Hey Pops - Did I fail that jump?" answer 1 smiling - "sure you did, it's no big deal and we'll get it next jump, here's what I'd like you to work on....." (validated and listening intently) answer 2 serious face - "I don't like to use that word, we call it ....." (zzzzzzoning out) what do you do? IMHO - ...
