I like this response - can I reverse it and turn it on the pro San Fran people in the Happy Meal thread? Uh.. Too late!! The criticism of this vote is brought to you by the same brand of crypto-fascisti who would limit personal decisions and try to tell people how to feed their kids. ... do you ever visit Dropzone.com? there's a forum there called Speaker's Corner..... check it out - pretty much it's primary mission is to find something nasty about an individual and tie them to some group - and then go off about how bad the whole group is. Sometimes the individual isn't even associated with the group. It doesn't really seem to matter a bit. ... so you're saying the government should decide then who marries each other and who gets to have kids? Edit: we knew before we became parents that if you let the kid cry when nothing is wrong and stop picking them up for that - eventually they stop crying and start becoming pretty nice kids. works most every time ... You are right, the parent puts the $$ on the counter. Maybe if they put adult toys in the Happy Meal instead of kid's toys, they'd increase sales...... you know, like power tools, or blenders - I don't know what you were thinking of when you read "adult toys" although, admitting that the parents are the ones that feed the kids and not the government is a good step ... that is the point, isn't it? the perception that the whole of Islam may be a bit more extreme or not? That discussion is key point. In other words, like liberals taking minority votes for granted, is the assumption that your "mainstream" muslim more or less prone to the fanaticism of the extremes vs any other person of any other group vs a pissing contest on which religion group's members are more despicable that goes nowhere (even if the discussion was originally intended to provide thoughtful contrast) ... Which is coming that's the choice of the people - but seems to be a bad expenditure of energy I think it's a pointless exercise in 'buttinskyness' closely related to "none of my businessess" and roughly associated with the "keep pushing them and you'll attract the flamboyant and unhealthy weirdos to your state instead of the probably fairly normal gays already in your area that have jobs and aren't really that different otherwise" ... What has ridicule got to do with anything. I assume that was a off the cuff facile remark for the sake of humour? Health is not just about the body and includes mental health which would hardly be helped by such a programme would it. Obesity negativly affects both. see? my ludicrous example of 'influence' is probably more effective at motivating kids to make better choices (despite their lazy parents) than SanFran's stupid and impotent new law AND, the bark is an excellent source of fiber it's called 'obnoxious escalation' here in speaker's corner (TM) for the children ... right, so why use a politically charged topic to counter turtle's politically charge topic? that doesn't seem productive debate - just snotty debate disguised as wry comparison (i.e. "see? my ludicrous example just highlights how ludicrous yours is - now let's fight to see who wins in the 'least ridiculous' example battle of witlessness") ... 'influence' is a key word if one accepts the above premise what is influence vs just improper mandate? I'm into very subtle influence - I think a gov program where fat kids in schools have to slowly walk the playground while all the other kids sing "fatty, fatty, two by four" while throwing bits of tree bark at them is a less costly plan to the economy. ... nope cars are the problem - if the parents didn't have cars, then they couldn't drive to work - if they don't go to work, they wouldn't have money - without money, they wouldn't be able to purchase the junk food - without the junk food, then the kids won't get fatter see? so the government should take over the car industry and only give cars to people that already have money Or, we could just blame the parents for (over)feeding the crap to their kids - but your way is much more fun Edit: it might be fun to turn this into a spanking thread.... If parents were allowed to discipline their kids, then the kids wouldn't need saturated fats to keep them under control.........the government should mandate spanking ... Apparently, it's more important to drive a social agenda that provides unfair advantages to 3 or 4 groups 'equally' than to consider a concept that treats all individuals equally how can you buy votes if you don't pander to someone that wants special treatment - or at least parity to some other group that already gets (or is perceived to get) special treatment? ... Don't do it because it's too hard to do. Dismiss the discussion out of hand because it makes enough sense that people get uncomfortable. I'm not dismissing it out of hand, but I'm a realist when it comes to certain things. There will never be a way to remove government from certain civil aspects of life. Governments will always collect taxes. The government might not have to link marriage and taxes together, nor do couple have to file jointly, but they certainly have always had the option to and in my mind it makes sense. Likewise I suppose the government could just say to hell with any inheritance and at death all property becomes that of the state, but I certainly don't see that ever happening either, nor do I think it should. So, what are you left with? People having the option to file jointly and spouses taking control of their partner's property when they've died. How exactly would you change that? Are you certain you'd even want to consider it? Think carefully now, don't just dismiss the question because it makes you "uncomfortable." I see, if we have a discussion on SC about a hypothetical situation that allows all individuals to be treated equally rather than whiny demographics fighting over perceived special privileges over other whiny demographic groups...... It's not a good discussion until provided with a full implementation plan. So I have to assume that you believe congress reads this stuff and cuts in changes based on Speaker's Corner "realism". admit that you just want to talk the subjective social issue and not the other tangents - then you can join tangents that interest you instead of just pissing all over anything that doesn't match your personal preferences. Seems that's all you try to do lately though. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
