  1. Jon Stewart's skit on this was hilarious. Rangel is so crooked it's comical. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. Quit bugging him. He's an adult, and he'll do it when he's ready. He doesn't need you nagging him. agreed, and unless the poster is an instructor, it's up to the DZO and staff to enforce the BSRs ... 3. I'll play - apparently, you think the area around the WTC is the same size as the entire country of Iran Edit: and if both all the Muslims and all the Catholics are killing puppies, then pretty soon we'll have a shortage. ... 4. There are only 30 muslim terrorists in the world? Well - that should be esy to fix. yup - and Billvon thinks 600 churches in Iran is more than the number of mosques in the US. what can you do? 7. wow - I can only assume some of the posters here have never had anything mint, or a cough drop in their lives. This is the third or 4th comment of this type. At first, I though people were just giving DSE some joking good natured ribbing, but now I think that a few of you are serious jump run "here, take this breath strip - see how when you inhale you get that cool feeling? maybe that'll be a reminder that you are breathing. " student takes strip and inhales "oooh, what a crisp (mediciny) sensation!!" then it works, maybe. so after that, they have a little inside joke and start calling them "magic breathing strips" just for fun do you guys seriously believe that the term "magic breathing strip" is anything but tongue in cheek - little ironic jokes are great to loosen a student up. it IS part of the job have you ever taken a deep breath after eating a mint? it feels different and nice. that sensation is certainly one option for some people to remind them about breathing edit: Some of you guys are acting ridiculous in this thread.

  10. I suspect there are people in the biz with perfectly good judgment. It's more likely that the procedures disallow that level of judgment and they are handcuffed by (call it whatever you like - fairness, PC thuggery, changing rules, litigation paranoia, ......etc ad nauseum). ... 13. sure, I get spun on the idea of justice when it's distorted by emotional responses. It's the only trigger I have really in that "other" forum. Emotional responses want: 1 - the families to feel better or have an opportunity to vent (doesn't fix a problem, just feels good) 2 - some sort of eye for eye (kill a couple of his family, beat on him, cut him up, burn him, see how HE likes it) - same thing, not a fix 3 - want to do worse to the guy - just because they are mad, this is about the commentator feeling good, not even about the victims etc etc etc note that most movies are based on these concepts, there is no fix for the families, or for the bad guy - the actions are already complete and we can't back up time.....yet the only fix is to find the individual and do what it takes so he doesn't do the crime to someone else in the future (prison, fines, take the license, retrain, etc etc etc etc). That's why we have cops that don't have to be emotionally invested in the specific accidents. That's why officials are recused from working on cases that have personal involvement. etc anything else is just posturing and tears and unhealthy (for society) junk not that I don't sympathize or feel the same when I see sad situations, I just recognize it for what it is - a desire to inflict my version of power over someone else ... 14. you start by making sure that there is a rotation in congress that ensures someone brings in donuts or bagels every Friday morning I pointed out the concept of 'reluctant service'. Seems we are on the same page. Perhaps service of this type would be more effective if we took up a "jury duty" model instead. Set up a minimum (IQ, education, success in current field, etc) set of criteria for serving in congress, or at least for being put up for vote - and then everyone has to be in the pool to sit in the hot seat for a term..... now the easy part - who establishes the criteria? Campaigns would be fun - "Vote for the OTHER GUY - I don't want it" "My opponent is not too bad, we used to play golf together" "Don't vote for __________, we need him to run the factory" "Vote for me, I'm bored at banking" etc ... 15. you can make the argument...... I'd make the argument that the access to power and the character of the individual play so much more that the salary level really doesn't matter at all ... 18. I'd agree. I also like the idea of the "reluctant service" - the citizens recruit talented, successful people and convince them to serve - they wouldn't want to, because they are successful and happy already, but they can be convinced because they are willing to do their duty. term limits would go along way to achieve both goals the point I'm making that most would still want the job for nothing is about the flaw of the current system that politicians don't do it for duty, they do it for the power ... 19. they don't "opt out" - that's easy, apparently, it's much like an FAA waiver. what they really do is push their cost off onto everyone else that didn't get a waiver - that's not simply 'opting out', it's just not paying for it ... 21. Fatality accidents are serious business for me. hey Dave you might just be tagging on my note to add an unrelated comment But if it's a response to my comments, then I'd reply: "serious" does NOT equal "emotional" In fact, I'd say just the opposite. "Serious" should be driving very controlled and thoughtful responses. And that is what I see from you - control and experience - not a bunch of out of control emotion or unbalanced passion. That's why I'm resonating with the other poster commenting about the vigilante tough guy comments we see all the time on this anonymous internet forum. When I see escalatory outrage in a poster's comments, I discard the content itself and just note that the poster is very tweaked by the situation (in essence, I delete the actual words of their post and just insert "I'm REALLY upset about this". That's valuable in itself just for insight into 'feelings' but nothing else. ... 23. IN terms of devils advocate... EXAMPLES. I was driving home yesterday and a deer runs up next to my car in the left lane (divided highway) - he came within 2 feet of my door. I sped up and made sure he was behind me and not on my hood. We were going 65 or so as posted. If I had just driven off safely at that point, I wouldn't have seen that another car was about to pass me at the very moment. As it was, I looked in the mirror to see the deer and caught sight of the deer about 12 feet in the air and the smashed front end and windshield of that 2nd car. Watched them start to pull over, then we went over a hill and the view was gone. So we came back at the next turnaround and made sure they were fine. BUT, had I not looked at that moment, I wouldn't have seen a thing and kept driving and it wouldn't have been anything wrong with that. ... 25. Sure, I see it. You are proposing that when one DZ gets a waiver for a Demo - three neighbor DZOs have to jack up normal jump prices on the regular jumpers to pay for the demo jumps and the gas and hours on the first airplane. sounds fair - that would be similar - I see it now and - get this - the FAA would get to pick and choose which DZs are subsidized by jump rates of other DZs just based on who they like better I've been educated - thanks for the great analogy. I love dem 'fairness' - it's a lot like rep "trickle down" only even more arbitrary for the children ...
